The Age of Skin and the Epoch of an Author: A Eulogy to Dubravka Ugrešić

AB - This text, the initial purpose of which was to review Dubravka Ugrešić’s
latest book in English translation, the collection of essays The Age of Skin (2020),
unexpectedly transformed into a synthetic writing on the literary and cultural
relevance of this great feminist post-Yugoslav author, who passed away suddenly on
17 March 2023. The article analyses the main theses of the book and contextualizes
them within Dubravka Ugrešić’s overall text corpus, emphasizing the importance of
her essayistic authorial voice—a voice that articulates critical topics of our time,
from poverty, exploitation, and violence, to migrations, everyday life mythologies,
and popular culture, to melancholic recollections of a better past, together with a
utopian future and the possibility of resistance, enabled also by the power and
beauty of literature.

AB - The apparatus of digital humanities, accompanied by a “temporal turn” in the studies of literature and culture stirred the analysis of the Women’s Movement periodical as a forerunner or vanguard discourse of this literature. The periodical’s articles, in which the issues of literally and cultural Yugoslavism, feminism, female authorship, class and socio-economic issues, the feminist public and finally female, feminine and feminist writing are discussed, are interpreted to support attempts to define and conceptualize post-Yugoslav literary discourse itself. The fact that Women’s Movement was not a strictly literary periodical has been linked to the concept – necessary for post-Yugoslav literature – of the literary field (Bourdieu), and further to the critical question of the autonomy of art. In this way the paradoxical proposal from the title of this essay, to include the texts from the 1920s and 1930s into the debate referring to literature produced almost a hundred years later, becomes in fact a necessary undertaking. Reading Women’s Movement today is an exploration of the early 20th century and its discourse which existed beyond the dominant theoretical matrices. That is why revisiting it initiates the archaeological research of the present. By finding textual and literary evidence for a different understanding of Yugoslavism – as a feeling of identity and a cultural concept inseparable from feminism – but also different understanding of culture generally, post-Yugoslav literature could be seen as a part of that feminist, affinity-based and pluralist community envisaged in the periodical Women’s Movement.

same prakse književne levice, bili nevidljivi. Uz ovaj pokušaj vraćanja diskursa književne
levice u analitički aparat, biće razmotreno i nekoliko novih interpretativnih ‘kriterijuma’,
AB - By interpreting the fiction of Dubravka Ugrešić (1949) and Biljana Jovanović (1953–1996), two Yugoslav and feminist authors whose first prose works coincided with the development of Yugoslav neofeminism and transformations brought by the artistic practices of the Neo-Avant-garde, the paper focused on the possibilities, but also on the relevance of reviving the notion of the literary left. What Aleksandar Flaker theorized as the literature of emphasized social functions, oriented towards “the ultimate goals of the workers’ movement” on one hand, and on the other as the avant-garde aesthetic transformation has been employed as the main axis of the analysis. However, though reflecting some of the ideological-poetic aspects of the dynamic (proletarian vs. avant-garde practices), the literary realities of the two authors also moved this established theoretical paradigm. Whereas Ugrešić’s fiction, which is predominantly read inside the transnational and feminist discourses in fact covers/produces many of the (Neo-)avant-gardists literary structures, Jovanović’s literary world could be theorized as the variation of the proletarian literature, with its specific ideological and aesthetic materialities, and a particular, anti-nostalgic relationship towards the past. Conclusions of the analysis lead to identifying the links among these literary realities and the post-Yugoslav literature, as a possible inheritor of the traditions of the literary left.

AB - By analysing Yugoslav writer Biljana Jovanović’s early novels, the essay follows
her possible literary speculations on the capacity of the Yugoslav society
to fulfil the promises of the revolution, together with her imagining of an alternative
form of sociability, as that which could result in universal, human
emancipation. Offering a peculiar portrait of the urban society of the late
seventies in Yugoslavia, in her novels Jovanović tests if and how the problem
of women’s emancipation is connected to the problems of class. Yet, a failure
of class emancipation, an ‘impossibility to revise’ the society is antagonized
from the scrupulous and self-confident feminist standpoint.

Neo-Avantgarde and Feminist Underpinnings of post-Yugoslav Literature and its Utopias: A Comparative Reading of Judita Šalgo and Slobodan Tišma

AB - The topic of the paper is the exploration of the ‘woman’s woman’ identity, as desired and conceptualized by the protagonist of Slobodan Tišma’s novel Bernardi’s Room, further analysed over its relation to the unwritten history of the post-Yugoslav literature. I tried interpreting what kind of a poetical and political identification that is and why it would be important to identify in such a way in the context of post-Yugoslav literature. To be a ‘woman’s woman’ points at a tradition, that is at inheriting or continuing what comes to be defined as womanly, understood as a sexual, textual and a literary possibility, or becoming. Therefore, the effects of a comparative reading of the two novels by Vojvodinian authors Judita Šalgo and Slobodan Tišma enable observing the continuities among late Yugoslav and post-Yugoslav literatures, disclosing their Neo-avant-gardist and feminist underpinnings. While those aspects integrate in the imagination of a utopia, which bears upon the gendered bodies and territories, the paper also aims at responding to the universalist/particularist dilemma which accompanies the process of establishing a literary text inside a respective literary field.

Post-Yugoslav Film and Literature Production: an Alternative to Mainstream Political and Cultural Discourse

Matijević, Tijana

(PECOB - Portal on Central Eastern and Balkan Europe University of Bologna - Forlì Campus, 2014)

TY - BOOK
AU - Matijević, Tijana

UR - http://rifdt.instifdt.bg.ac.rs/123456789/3463
AB - Drawing upon studies which emphasized and conceptualized the existence of
political and cultural alternatives to the emerging nationalistic cultures in ex-Yugoslav
societies, this study aims at following those anti-nationalist artistic records in newly
formed post-Yugoslav states. By offering an overview to the contemporary artistic
production, namely literature and film, an exploration focuses on several concrete
cultural concepts, which should then function as tools for displaying the difference/
opposition between the mainstream culture and its alternative authors and artifacts.
The question of an exile, as existentially altered position, which also reframes the issue of one’s belonging, then question of the Other, crucial for establishing one’s identity, and finally a
notion of memory which is a space for reconsideration of both private and official
histories, problems of responsibility and guilt, are encompassing the way these post-
Yugoslav film and literature authors articulate their own artistic and political views.
Process of violent disintegration is a constitutive argument of this research, for it
necessitates understanding of three post-Yugoslav states which were at war (Croatia,
Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia) as a single cultural/political space. By inevitably
touching upon Yugoslav cultural heritage this writing also seeks to distinguish
novel identities and concepts which have been emerging after the dissolution.
