tokom 1968, 1981. i 1988 godine.
Krajnje posledice

AB - Why Still Education? will appeal to researchers of education – scholars and students alike – in the fields of philosophy, sociology, pedagogy, andragogy, psychology, political theory, anthropology, and history, as well as experts in education management and educational practitioners, such as teachers and textbook authors. The question posed by the title is separated in the book into three more specific questions; the first of which, titled “Education for What?”, investigates the eternal issue the purpose of education. The second section, which examines the most appropriate approaches and expected outcomes for a child-centred perspective, is called “Education for Whom?”; and the third part, “Whose Education?”, takes national, gender and other subtle or self-explanatory characteristics of education and looks at them from the standpoint of discrimination. The volume offers nine different chapters, which provide illuminating and interesting answers to these questions, and, thus, allow them to be more thoroughly resolved and enable rational discourse about them.

Between the Critical and the Engaged: On the Importance of Studying Symbolic Aspects of the Reproduction of Social Order

AB - Late 20th century developments in social sciences and humanities have
placed particular focus on the symbolic aspects of reproduction of social order,
stressing the importance of discursive work in the process. It has become
widely accepted that discourse is profoundly embedded in society and culture,
and hence, closely related also to all forms of power and social inequality. Therefore,
it rightfully assumes a central position among the research objects of
contemporary social sciences. The aim of this article is to critically examine the
impact of the interpretive turn on the study of culture and symbolic registers of
society. The analysis focuses on three approaches to the study of discourse,
culture and society: critical discourse analysis, Pierre Bourdieu’s sociology of
culture and Jeffrey Alexander’s strong program in cultural sociology. These approaches
are further analyzed according to their position within Burawoy’s division
of sociological labor, particularly between critical and public (engaged) sociology.
Finally, the author suggests that engagement in detailed reconstructions
of discursive manifestations of power, symbolic struggles and/or discursive codes
in a society can provide valuable insight that could open up space for social
engagement. However, in order to fully grasp the importance of symbolic aspects
for the everyday reproduction of social order, the focus of analysis must also be
placed on the role cultural traits and practices (understood as a discursive resources
like any other) play in constructing stratificational categories, identities
and distinctions, masking the very roots of inequalities that created the perceived
cultural differences in the first place.

AB - In this paper we examine to which extent was egalitarian vocabulary of Yugoslav socialism
able to provide an alternative framework for interpretation of Serbian-Albanian
relations. Our initial hypothesis is that – due to the experimental nature of Yugoslav
self-management socialism, which implied certain compromises with liberal
capitalism – the Yugoslav elite was structurally bound to systematically negate the
social aspect of protests that took place in Kosovo in 1968, 1981 and 1988. Using critical
discourse analysis on daily newspapers (Politika, Večernje novosti and Borba), we
show how the nomenclature treated the complex social-political aspects of the social
uprisings exclusively as a manifestation of nationalism. To the actors involved, this
discursive strategy suggested that nationalism is a common denominator for economic,
political and ethnic equality. Final consequences of these discursive strategies will
be shown through analysis of media coverage of protests in Kosovo and the “Brotherhood
and Unity” meeting that took place Belgrade in 1988, wherein we can see that
there is little space left for non-nationalistic interpretation of any kind of social uprising,
both in media and actors’ perspective.
