AB - The purpose of this study was to examine how attachment to pets relates to the psychological
well-being of an individual. Previous research shows that relationship with pets has qualities
of psychological attachment and can positively affect well-being: pets provide love and
comfort to their owners, and they are perceived as support during difficult periods of life. We,
therefore, expected that attachment to pets would be a significant predictor of psychological
well-being. In addition, assuming that contact with pets can alleviate everyday stress, we tested
whether a reduced experience of stress mediated this relationship. A survey was conducted
among a community sample of pet owners (N =215). The sample consisted of respondents aged
13 to 66 years, with an average age of 30 (M = 29.92, SD =10.70; 81.4% women). Participants
indicated their attachment to a favorite pet (using The Short Attachment to Pets Scale; SAPS,
α =.89), subjective well-being (using The Pemberton Happiness Index, α = .91), and the current
level of perceived stress (using The Serbian version of the Perceived Stress Scale, α = .65). The
results revealed a positive relationship between pet attachment and well-being (r = .238, p
=.001). However, the assumption that attachment to pets will reduce the experience of stress
turned out to be unsupported. Conversely, participants who were more attached to their pets
also expressed more experience of stress (r = .211, p = .005). Mediation analysis showed that
the relationship between pet attachment and well-being was not mediated by the experience of
stress (b = -0.01, SE = 0.02, 95%CI [-0.05, 0.01]). One possible interpretation is that individuals
more attached to their pets are generally more caring and emotional so they might be more
sensitive to stressors. Another possible interpretation is that taking care of pets in itself causes
stress. The relationship between caring for pets, stress, and well-being appears to be more
complex and needs further study. Still, current findings can be a significant starting point for
future research on the relationship between pet attachment and psychological well-being in the
local cultural context.

AB - We must face this fact: psychology is not sufficiently equal and diverse. Recent studies
highlight inequalities within the discipline of social psychology and structural disadvantages
faced by researchers from, among others, the region of South and Eastern Europe (Bou
Zeineddine, Saab, Lášticová, Kende, & Ayanian, 2021; Nyúl, Lantos, Reicher, & Kende,
2021). Building on these insights, we proposed a project supported by the European
Association of Social Psychology that aims to establish and empower a network of social
psychologists from ten countries within the region of South and East Europe (Bosnia &
Herzegovina, Croatia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Kosovo, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Ukraine,
Latvia). This symposium is meant to be a local meeting of social psychologists to identify the
challenges and possible solutions – practices and resources that can help. We want to present
some insights and experiences to stimulate a discussion with our colleagues. In her talk, Bojana
Bodroža will offer insights into the issue of how limited resources are a challenge to producing
high-quality research and how these challenges can be overcome by relying on open-source
practices and building international collaborations. Tijana Karić will discuss the challenges and
opportunities for young researchers, as the early stage of their career is recognized as the
turning point affecting the future international participation of researchers. Finally, Iris Žeželj
will focus on examples of applicable practices aimed at increasing equality and diversity in the
discipline that are overcoming the challenge of tokenism, such as inclusive editorial policies
and fair crediting of co-authorship. The ambition of this symposium is thus to share experiences
and empower researchers in future efforts at international participation, aware of challenges
and biases but also more aware of their strengths and the opportunities for collaboration within
the region.

Dark minds dislike animals: The relationship between the Dark Tetrad and speciesism

AB - Speciesism designates a belief that humans should be treated as morally superior to other
animals because they are different from all other animals. This belief entails disregarding non human animals' sentience and ability to suffer. Accordingly, in previous research, speciesism
has been related to a more general lack of empathy and antisocial personality traits. In this
study, we sought to investigate the relationship between the Dark Tetrad traits (Narcissism,
Psychopathy, Machiavellianism, and Sadism) with different indicators of attitudes toward non human animals. We investigated this in a study with a community sample of adults (N = 369),
in which participants indicated their attitude toward using animals in different industries, their
frequency of meat consumption, and pro-social intentions toward animals. We constructed
the path analysis where Dark Tetrad traits were set as the predictor variables while the
attitudinal measures were set as the criteria. The model had high fit indices since all variables
were modeled as observable: χ(5) = 6.262; p > .05; NFI = .981; CFI = .996; RMSEA = .026.
Controlling for age, sex, and educational level, speciesism was related to psychopathy and
sadism, with sadism as the most important predictor. Pro-social intentions toward animals
were also negatively associated with psychopathy. Meat consumption was related to
Machiavellianism, but this path was marginally significant. Narcissism was not related to any
of the outcome measures. These findings suggest that the Dark Tetrad of personality has
systematic ties to attitudes toward animals, especially psychopathy and sadism. This link is
probably best explained through the insufficient capacity for empathy. These findings are also
relevant to the literature on the link between violence toward animals and domestic and
gender-based violence.

AB - This paper investigates how horizontal and vertical individualism and collectivism predict self-report loneliness in addition to the variance accounted for by age and sex in 28 countries (N = 8,345). Horizontal and vertical aspects of individualism and collectivism had small but significant contributions to predicting loneliness. Horizontal-collectivism (for 19 country samples) and, to a lesser extent, horizontal-individualism (for seven country samples), significantly predicted lower loneliness scores. Vertical-individualism (for 16 country samples), and to a lesser extent, vertical-collectivism (for six country samples), predicted feeling more loneliness among our participants. Adjusted R2 values suggested that between 0.6% and 27.7% of self-report loneliness was predicted. These results suggest that those who value egalitarian social relations also tend to report being less lonely whereas those who value individuality and competitiveness endorse the loneliness items more. These results are of importance to those investigating and helping lonely individuals by appreciating the influence of perceived culture.

U popularnoj kulturi
navode stabilnost i sigurnost (radnih mjesta, stambenog pitanja i slično) (27.4 %), jaku i veliku
državu sa znatnim međunarodnim ugledom (18.8 %), bratstvo i jedinstvo i mir među narodima
bivše Jugoslavije (16.1 %) i vrijednosti poput društvene ravnopravnosti i boljeg položaja žena
i radnika (13.1 %).
uređenjem, bliskošću naroda u regiji i boljim položajem trenutno postojećih država u svijetu.

U popularnoj kulturi

AB - To describe how Serbian online media cover the topic of traditional, complementary, and alternative medicine (TM/CAM), we conducted a content analysis of 182 articles from six news and six magazine websites, published July–December 2021. Biologically based treatments, predominantly herbal products framed as Serbian or Russian folk medicine, were the most common (70.9%, 205/289 practices). The practices were often presented as general health enhancers (18.4%, 71/386 claims); other common reasons given for the use of TM/CAM were to alleviate respiratory problems, boost the immunity, and detox. The tone was overwhelmingly positive, with most of the positive articles (82.4%, 145/176) neglecting to present information on potential harms of TM/CAM use. Few articles provided a recommendation to speak with a healthcare provider (13.6%, 24/176); in contrast, the recommended dosage was often explained (59.7%, 105/176). TM/CAM practitioners (15.9%, 28/176) and conventional medicine practitioners (12.5%, 22/176) were most commonly cited sources. Articles tended to appeal to TM/CAM’s tradition of use (65.3%, 115/176), naturalness (45.5%, 80/176), and convenience (40.9%, 72/176), used pseudoscientific jargon (59.7%, 105/176), and failed to cite sources for the claims that TM/CAM use is supported by science (22.2%, 39/176). Much of the information provided in Serbian online media seems to be uncritical, with a potential for misleading consumers.

AB - People resort to various questionable health practices to preserve or regain health - they intentionally do not adhere to medical recommendations (e.g. self-medicate or modify the prescribed therapies; iNAR), or use traditional/complementary/alternative (TCAM) medicine. As retrospective reports overestimate adherence and sufer from recall and desirability bias, we tracked the variations in daily questionable health behaviors and compared them to their retrospectively reported lifetime use. We also preregistered and explored their relations to a wide set of psychological predictors - distal (personality traits and basic thinking dispositions) and proximal (diferent unfounded beliefs and biases grouped under the term irrational mindset). A community sample (N = 224) tracked daily engagement in iNAR and TCAM use for 14 days, resulting in 3136 data points. We observed a high rate of questionable health practices over the 14 days; daily engagement rates roughly corresponded to lifetime ones. Both iNAR and TCAM were weakly, but robustly positively related. Independent of the assessment method, an irrational mindset was the most important predictor of TCAM use. For iNAR, however, psychological predictors emerged as relevant only when assessed retrospectively. Our study ofers insight into questionable health behaviors from both a within and between-person perspective and highlights the importance of their psychological roots.

AB - Objectives We aimed to (1) develop a novel instrument, suitable for the general population, capturing intentional non-adherence (iNAR), consisting of non-adherence to prescribed therapy, self-medication and avoidance of seeking medical treatment; (2) differentiate it from other forms of non-adherence, for example, smoking; and (3) relate iNAR to patient-related factors, such as sociodemographics, health status and endorsement of irrational beliefs (conspiratorial thinking and superstitions) and to healthcare-related beliefs and experiences ((mis)trust and negative experiences with the healthcare system, normalisation of patient passivity).

Design То generate iNAR items, we employed a focus group with medical doctors, supplemented it with a literature search and invited a public health expert to refine it further. We examined the internal structure and predictors of iNAR in an observational study.

Setting Data were collected online using snowball sampling and social networks.

Participants After excluding those who failed one or more out of three attention checks, the final sample size was n=583 adult Serbian citizens, 74.4% female, mean age 39.01 years (SD=12.10).

Primary and secondary outcome measures The primary, planned outcome is the iNAR Questionnaire, while smoking was used for comparison purposes.

Results Factor analysis yielded a one-factor solution, and the final 12-item iNAR Questionnaire had satisfactory internal reliability (alpha=0.72). Health condition and healthcare-related variables accounted for 14% of the variance of iNAR behaviours, whereas sociodemographics and irrational beliefs did not additionally contribute.

Conclusions We constructed a brief yet comprehensive measure of iNAR behaviours and related them to health and sociodemographic variables and irrational beliefs. The findings suggest that public health interventions should attempt to improve patients' experiences with the system and build trust with their healthcare practitioners rather than aim at specific demographic groups or at correcting patients’ unfounded beliefs.

AB - Understanding the nature of copying errors in the cultural transmission of material culture is highly relevant for students of cultural evolution, especially in the field of evolutionary archaeology. In this paper, we set up a classic transmission chain experiment, which involves making clay anthropomorphic figurines, to explore the nature of the copying error related to the production of 3D objects. The experiment consists of four independent transmission chains, each with 10 participants. Three chains are non-expert chains, as they consist of students of archaeology and psychology with no formal training in arts. The fourth is an expert chain consisting of art students. Our results show that the copying error predictably differs between the experts and the non-experts – it is lower in the expert chain. However, in both groups, the error is higher than predicted by the models that assume that the copying error is only due to imperfections in the perception of linear dimensions. Taken together, these two results suggest that, in addition to the error in perception, the error in the execution contributes significantly to the overall error, as predicted by the recently formulated object-mediated transmission model (Crema et al., 2023). The results of our experiment also show that the errors are often biased rather than random, suggesting that the transmission process involves the transformations anticipated by the cultural attraction theory.

Šta ljudi znaju o stvarnim mentalnim i emocionalnim kapacitetima životinja?

AB - Introduction: Consumption of animals entails disregarding the pain of sentient beings, and acknowledging this can threaten an individual’s image of oneself as a moral person. Also, abstaining from meat in a meat-eating culture can threaten an individual’s valued group identity. Previous research on inter-group relations suggests that self-affirmation, affirmation of personally or collectively important values, can help individuals alleviate self-threats since it enhances one’s global self-image and decreases threat perceptions.

Methods: We tested for potential effects of self-affirmation on openness toward reducing meat consumption in an experimental study. Participants (N = 277) were randomized into an individual affirmation, group affirmation, or a control condition. Individual affirmation participants ranked a list of values and then wrote a short paragraph about their first-ranked value. Group affirmation participants did a similar task, focusing on the values of their ethnic group, while participants in the control condition had an unrelated task of ranking their color preferences. Participants then read a persuasive message presenting health risks related to meat consumption and the health benefits of reducing meat. Finally, they indicated their openness toward reducing meat consumption and acceptability of plant-based alternatives and lab-grown meat.

Results and Discussion: Results show that affirmed participants expressed more readiness to reconsider their meat consumption habits, reduced perceptions of vegetarianism as a threat to the local culture, and more positive perceptions of the idea of lab-grown meat. However, self-esteem and frequency of meat consumption pose important limitations to the experimental effects. We discuss the findings from the perspective of self-and collective identity threats and the potential of self-affirmations to create a more open debate about animal product consumption.

AB - The relationships between self-report loneliness and the four humor styles of affiliative, aggressive, self-defeating, and self-enhancing were investigated in 15 countries (N = 4,701). Because loneliness has been suggested to be both commonly experienced and detrimental, we examine if there are similar patterns between humor styles, gender, and age with loneliness in samples of individuals from diverse backgrounds. Across the country samples, affiliative and self-enhancing humor styles negatively correlated with loneliness, self-defeating was positively correlated, and the aggressive humor style was not significantly related. In predicting loneliness, 40.5% of the variance could be accounted. Younger females with lower affiliative, lower self-enhancing, and higher self-defeating humor style scores had higher loneliness scores. The results suggest that although national mean differences may be present, the pattern of relationships between humor styles and loneliness is consistent across these diverse samples, providing some suggestions for mental health promotion among lonely individuals.

AB - Research suggests a trend toward an increased interest in CAM, complementary and alternative therapies for treating mental health problems, which is paralleled by a relatively favorable attitude of mental health professionals. This study explored psychological predictors of attitude toward CAM therapies: frustration tolerance (measured by the 28-item Frustration Discomfort Scale), self-esteem (measured by the 16-item Revised Version of the Self-Liking/Self-Competence Scale), cognitive styles (measured by REI Scale-short version) and irrational health beliefs (measured by CAM Health Belief Questionnaire – CHBQ). Participants (N = 294) reacted to vignettes describing Bach flower remedies and neuro-linguistic programming to indi-cate their attitude toward CAM. CAM health beliefs (e.g., belief that health is a balance of life forces) and self-esteem positively predicted attitude toward CAM, while the rational style of thinking was a negative predictor. As suggested by mediation analysis, the intuitive thinking style affected the attitude toward CAM via an increase in CAM beliefs. We discuss the implications of our findings for encouraging rational decision-making when seeking help with mental health problems.

AB - Humor styles refer to the everyday use of humor, varying across self-enhancing, affiliative, aggressive and self-defeating styles, entailing differences in focus on the self vs. other as well as between being adaptive vs. maladaptive. We validated the instrument devised to capture these differences, the Humor Styles Questionnaire (HSQ; Martin et al., Journal of Research in Personality 37:48–75, 2003), in a novel cultural context. Furthermore, we investigated the relations of humor styles with various aspects of social orientations and attitudes, to widen the understanding of the correlates. Our study showed that the suggested four-factor structure reproduces reasonably well in the Serbian context, with some notable exceptions. Humor styles were meaningfully related to basic social connectedness of the individual (loneliness and self-esteem) as well as the wider social orientations and attitudes (their value orientations, social dominance orientation, and ethnocentrism). The self-defeating humor style was reflective of a more negative view of oneself and subordination to the group while the aggressive humor style indicated endorsement of dominance within the in-group over other groups. We discuss the cross-cultural validity of the instrument and how the findings contribute to a wider positioning of the humor styles within the domain of social-psychological variables.

AB - The modern choices of diet are often perceived at odds with the traditional worldviews. This study aimed to test the possibility of improving attitudes toward vegetarians by emphasizing the similarity between vegetarianism and religious fasting. We expected the effects of induction to be moderated by endorsement of right-wing authoritarianism and social dominance orientation (SDO-D and SDO-E). Participants (N = 246) were randomly divided into three groups that all read a text about a traditional birthday celebration. The control group read a text about the celebration with meat-based meals, one experimental group read about a celebration with meatless dishes. In the second experimental group it was emphasized that the host became a vegetarian after years of religious fasting. Both inductions improved attitudes toward vegetarians. Only SDO-D proved to be a significant moderator, with induction exhibiting a significant effect at higher levels of SDO-D. The findings inform public communications about reducing meat consumption.

AB - The aim of this research was to validate the dual conception of envy in Serbian culture, measured by the Benign and Malicious Envy Scale (BeMaS). In Study 1 (N = 404), the results confirmed cross-cultural invariance of the Malicious Envy scale across Serbian and US samples, with the US sample obtaining higher scores. However, two items in the Benign Envy scale showed significant differential item functioning across samples. Nonetheless, both scales in Serbian showed adequate measurement precision (information) and the expected distinction in relations with narcissistic admiration, narcissistic rivalry, and self-esteem, with more aversive characteristics associated with Malicious Envy. In Study 2 (N = 404), Malicious Envy showed a negative relation with Conscientiousness and Openness, as well as higher negative correlations with Honesty-Humility, Agreeableness, psychopathy, and sadism compared to Benign Envy. Furthermore, Malicious Envy showed higher positive correlations with psychological distress, while Benign Envy showed negative correlations with some aspects of distress. The results support good psychometric properties of BeMaS scores of the Serbian adaptation and add to the cross-cultural validity of the dual conception of envy.

AB - Current research supports the idea that attitudes toward animals, including their rights and treatment, relate to other social and ideological views. In this study, I explored whether attitudes toward animals relate to wider ideological beliefs and important social identities in Serbia. I conducted two surveys to identify these relationships. In the first study, a sample (n = 321) from the general population completed a questionnaire asking about their attitudes toward animals, their acceptance of authority and societal order (right-wing authoritarianism), their preference for social hierarchy (social dominance orientation), and the importance of their social identities (gender, ethnicity, religion). I found that participants who were less supportive of animal rights also endorsed authoritarianism and relations of social dominance between groups to a larger extent. Furthermore, those who identified more strongly with gender, ethnicity, and religion also expressed more negative attitudes toward animals. In the second study, I surveyed undergraduate students in Serbia (n = 207) to determine the role of ethnic attachment as an ideological basis for attitudes toward animals. Perceptions of vegetarianism as an alternative lifestyle and a threat to the local traditions mediated the effects of ethnic attachment on both attitudes toward animals and meat consumption. However, this was true only for participants who prioritized group needs over individual needs (collectivists). In contrast, those with individualist views were more likely to endorse discrimination on the basis of species, regardless of their ethnocentrism. The findings show that attitudes toward animals correlated with endorsement of social hierarchies and with valuing the superiority of the ethnic ingroup. Attitudes toward animals thus relate to wider ideological views, in particular perceiving vegetarianism as a threat to the traditional values. I also discuss the implications of the findings for the study of human–animal relations.

Who Believes in ESP: Cognitive and Motivational Determinants of the Belief in Extra-Sensory Perception

AB - Many people believe in extra-sensory perception, e.g. the ability to communicate with thoughts, to sense future events or locate radiation with the help of a V-shaped piece of wood. Addressing a gap in research specifically focused on ESP beliefs, we investigated cognitive styles and basic motivations related to these beliefs in two survey studies. The findings suggest that a propensity to use intuition is the best predictor of ESP beliefs in terms of cognitive style. ESP belief is positively related to fear of death, and this relation is partly mediated by fatalism, i.e. the belief that chance controls one’s life. ESP beliefs do not seem to be perceived as irreconcilable with a rational view of reality however, they do not necessarily provide psychological protection from existential concerns. The implications of the findings in terms of costs and benefits of these beliefs and the possibility to change them are discussed.
