Violence and “Counter Violence”. On Correct Rejection. A Sketch of a Possible Russian Ethics of War Considered through the Understanding of Violence in Tolstoy and in Petar II Petrović Njegoš

AB - The article’s intention is to construct a possible minimal response to violence,
that is, to describe what would be justified (necessary or legitimate) “противонасилие”
(counter-violence). This argument is built on reviving several important philosophical texts in
Russian of the first half of the twentieth century as well as on going beyond that historical
moment. Starting with the reconstruction of Tolstoy’s criticism of any use of violence, it is then
shown that, paradoxically, resistance to Tolstoy’s or ‘pseudo’—Tolstoy’s teachings ends up
incorporating Tolstoy’s thematization of counter-violence into various theories, which sought
to legitimate the use of force. In particular, Tolstoy’s discovery of a force, which, on the one
hand, is not grounded in violence and, on the other hand, which is capable of countering
violence, becomes fundamental in reasoning about the just use of force. The connection is made
between Tolstoy and Petar II Petrović Njegoš, who also thematizes the use of force in Christian
perspective. In his view, justice, “blessed by the Creator’s hand,” has the capacity to protect
from violent force. Any living thing defends itself from what endangers it by means Creator
bestowed it with. Living force and protective use of force are conceptually linked in Njegoš’s
reasoning. Thus, only protective force can defeat aggressive force. This is shown to be Njegoš’s
contribution to the Orthodox Christian discourse on violence. If a force can be counter-violent,
the next step in our argument would be to search for a protocol that should have universal
validity, that is, it has to be valid for all conflicting sides, The protocol of counter-violence
requires that, firstly, it is a response to violence; secondly, it interrupts violence and forestalls
any possible future violence (it is the ‘last’ violence); thirdly, it is subject to verification, it
addresses those who are a priori against any response to violence (which usually refers to
various forms of “Tolstoyism”).

elementos (o messianismo e o niilismo positivo) poderiam ampliar a minha

elementos (o messianismo e o niilismo positivo) poderiam ampliar a minha

AB - The text presented is the beginning of a project of a group based in Belgrade
at the Institute of Philosophy and Social Theory for Engagement Studies. We are
interested in how the French word engagement behaves in Russian. A preliminary definition of our position and the main hypothesis consists of several provisions: first, we are interested in the acts or actions, as a result of which something happens, and not the facts, objects, consequences or results of these acts.
It is important for us to know how a society is built or how individuals come together and hold together. We believe that there are acts, or groups of acts that
work or do not work. Second, we are trying to highlight the acts that result in institutions, and not just groups, societies or communities. We believe that without
the participation of the so-called “biased acts”, whose definition we want to give
in our text, there are no institutions as such or strong and stable institutions. Engaged acts give institutions legal status and strengthen them. And the third,
in the case of philosophical communities, we are faced with the problematic nature of biased acts and greater operability of institutional acts, which determines
some specifics of philosophical communities.

Invention of the future in project-time. An imaginary “encounter” between Georg Simmel and Henri Bergson, and its significance for architecture*

AB - The article addresses the reconstructed dialogue with the texts of G. Simmel (G. Simmel “Untersuchungen über die Formen der Vergesellschaftung”; “Über räumliche Projekten sozialer
Formen”) and H.Bergson (H.Bergson “Histoire de l’idée de temps”) in order to analyze the
question of how the design/creation of the future was understood by these philosophers, and
how this question can be interpreted today. We would like to present some conditions and difficulties in revealing the future and the temporal nature of any project. First, we would like to
insist on a weakness in languages spoken by a great number of people, which is that the future
is difficult to linguistically stabilize and document: German and English do not have a future
tense, using instead auxiliary verbs, “werden” (to become), “will”/be going to”. The study of
the project as an intellectual (intention, idea, concept) and social phenomenon (design as a
social action) allows us to illustrate how the future (project) becomes a task of activity in the
present. The project transfers or shifts (Simmel) the future time to space which is always ready
for the perception of projections, and is also an opportunity to organize future joint actions.
We will argue that when the project is executed, when it is no longer — there is no longer
any future. The project thus ensures the future. Or, to achieve complete circularity, we will
introduce a third element: without the future, a group or a “we” cannot possibly exist. In our
text, we would like to unreservedly insist that the idea of a project, or perhaps a sketch of any future theory of the project (or concept), has already been provided at the beginning of the last
century within an imaginary encounter between Henri Bergson and Georg Simmel.

What Is an Act of Engagement? Between the Social, Collegial and Institutional Protocols

AB - Engagement is not synonymous with commitment, even though both words are used in translations between English, French, and German. However, engagement is also not some supplementary phenomenon or a technical term that the phrase social acts already includes in itself or that the concepts of ‘commitment’ or ‘joint commitment’ somehow necessarily imply. In this article I would like to describe a special kind of social act and determine the function they have in relation between various agents. Most importantly, I would like to define their significance in the transformation of a group into an institution or higher order entity. My premise is that there are acts whose aim is to engage all others, since they refer to all of us together, and in so doing reduce negative (social) “acts” as well as various asocial behaviors within a group or institution. In this sense, engaged acts could alternatively also belong to a kind of institutional act, since they introduce certain adjustments to the institution, changing or modifying its rules, increasing its consistency and efficiency.

The acts of project(ion) / project acts or projacts

AB - I am interested in the epistemological status of «project(ion)», that is, the «act» or «strategy» of project(ion) in relation to various didactic protocols usually associated with an «author» and her intention or production. What is a plan, program, plot, platform, concept, conception, or even «meta-project»? Is a project or projection necessarily an «architectural matter»? Is it a prototypically Western or European procedure of specific use of time and space (literally, throwing forth into space/time)? I will attempt to explain some passages from Eisenman, Cacciari, as well as a theory recently put forth by Armando and Durbiano (Teoria del progetto architettonico).

What is a plan, program, plot, platform, concept, conception, or even «meta-project»? Is a project or projection necessarily an «architectural matter»? Is it a prototypically Western or European procedure of specific use of time and space (literally, throwing forth into space/time)? I will attempt to explain some passages from Eisenman, Cacciari, as well as a theory recently put forth by Armando and Durbiano (Teoria del progetto architettonico).",

My contribution to this topic is to problematize our positions on sacrifice and the status
of efficiency of sacrifice, as one of the main components of this institute.

AB - In this paper I would like to reflect
on discipline as a category (as opposed to other
possibilities, such as notion, structure, norm,
protocol, etc.), and explain the quotation marks
in the title, as they can always follow and amend
the word discipline. My intention is to reconstruct
a decades-long resistance to discipline (as
punishment, control, violent pedagogy, militarism,
fanaticism, masculinity, unfreedom), and
to uncover the origin of praise for self-discipline,
un-discipline or interdisciplinarity. Further, I would like to offer a few arguments in favor of
discipline as one of the most important protocols
of social ontology, and the unconditioned condition
of cooperation, life and group work. Discipline
is joint learning, as well as production
and a nurturing of knowledge that constitutes
and sustains an institution. The question is whether
individuals’ discipline indeed makes an institution
necessarily better or more just.

“Leben und Gewalt” or “Gewalt und Leben” A Commentary on Paragraph 18 of Walter Benjamin’s “Toward the Critique of Violence”

AB - In paragraph
18 of “Toward the Critique of Violence,” the terms life, living,
and violence,
and
the relations
among them, complicate
Walter Benjamin’s
justification
of divine
violence—
his text’s
main discovery.
This article
seeks to reconstruct
Benjamin’s
uses of life and living
in earlier
texts and to
consider
the potential
influence
of various
authors
he was reading
at the time (Heinrich Rickert, Erich
Unger, Kurt Hiller, Gershom Scholem). Benjamin’s
distinction
between
life and living
is crucial
for his critique
of pacifism
and for his shift in perspective:
he moves the focus
from the victim
to the one committing
murder,
but whose violent
act just might bring justice.

Institutional Change and the Paradox of (Restitution and) Restauration of the Institution

AB - My intention in this text is to present the most significant contribution of some French philosophers and anthropologists to the notion of reconstruction and advancement of institutions. The paradox of change, reform or transformation of the institution – is an entirely new institution possible? How do institutions die? – lies in the difficulty or even impossibility to change something that manifests what we are as a group. If institutions really present or represent the relations among all of us, how can they be changed in the first place? Whence the capacity for change? What allows for the idea of the “new”?
