Čitavo događanje otvoreno je koncertom hora Jevrejske opštine Novi Sad – „Hašira“ i izložbom u novosadskoj Sinagogi pod nazivom „Pisanje stradanja: vodič kroz publikacije o Holokaustu“ autorke, Bilјane Albahari i dizajnerke Ornele Rezinović.

Recognition as a Counterhegemonic Strategy

AB - Building on the analyses of cultural hegemony in the works of Nancy Fraser and Wendy Brown, I argue in the paper that the historic bloc (order of cultural hegemony) of post-Fordist capitalism is characterized by a particular dynamic between several ‘axes’ of hegemony that gives rise to the ‘paradox of engagement/disengagement’. The ‘progressive-expertocratic’ axis of hegemony creates a subject-position of the ‘engaged self’, a figure embodying a certain promise of political agency that is simultaneously obstructed by other, depoliticizing axes of hegemony. This dynamic is conducive to the rise of contemporary right-wing authoritarianism, which purports to fulfill this promise of political agency through a series of displacements – the counterhegemonic left, I argue, has so far not formulated an effective alternative to this strategy. In the second part, I explore the potential of Axel Honneth’s theory of recognition, in particular his concept of ‘interpersonal respect’, for grounding a left strategy of connecting (mutually articulating) the hegemonic figure of the ‘engaged self’ with a progressive politics of social transformation. To that end, I elaborate Honneth’s perspective by means of an argument about the role of trust in the context of societal crises that Igor Cvejić, Srđan Prodanović and I have recently formulated.

Habitus and Higher Order Desires: Going Beyond Determinism

AB - In this paper, I will try to consider the usual allegations of determinism that are directed towards Bourdieu’s notion of habitus from a slightly different perspective. One of the most common arguments found in these types of charges is that Bourdieu unsuccessfully attempted to reconcile objective and subjective aspects of social life under one notion. According to critics, habitus is not a viable solution to structure vs. agency debate simply because it cannot be both determined by social structure and open to contingency of autonomous subjective interpretations of the social world. I will show that this critique of Bourdieu actually is inspired by incompatibilist philosophy which maintains that regarding human action either determinism or free will can be true. However, those sociologists who, in criticising Bourdieu’s understanding of habitus, follow the incompatibilist line of reasoning usually overlook the compatibilist side of this old debate in moral philosophy. In that regard, I will argue that Frankfurt and Taylor’s compatibilist account of second order desires and strong evaluations can help us to better understand how habitus can be determined by environmental social factors and, at the same, time not only foster free will, but also provide a theoretical insight into radical forms of social change.

AB - The work points to irreconcilable differences and internal tensions that under the term ‘republic’ are inherited, primarily, by the eighteenth century, which was favorable to it. Those disagreements and ambivalences, which determine modern theory to a good extent, are presented, respectively, through understandings of the republic in the Enlightenment, romanticism, republicanism and in the tradition of the ‘republic of letters’. It is concluded that the emancipatory potential that is invested in the republic, if it has the same or a similar point of resistance – for example: monarchy, church domination of social life, what was once called the concise catchphrase ‘throne and altar’, the abolition of privatized and/or particular decision-making monopolies and all misconceptions, prejudices, and the authorities that legitimize them – did not have at all the same or a similar vision of the desirable state after the coup has taken place, that is, in the name of what the republic should be established.

Unveiling the Emotions of Love, Fear, and Hope: Women of the Holocaust

AB - This presentation is divided into two segments. The first explores the woman’s perspective from a male viewpoint, while the second delves into the woman’s perspective from a female standpoint. The Mauthausen Trilogy, known as The Ballad of Mauthausen, composed by Greek artist Mikis Theodorakis, serves as a poignant example of Holocaust narratives. Within this trilogy, the Song of Songs, which features evocative lyrics by the Greek poet Iakovos Kambanellis, provides a glimpse into the human experience of love and loss within the harrowing context of the Holocaust. Namely, the Song of Songs (Asma asmaton) captures Kambanellis’ affection for a Lithuanian-Jewish woman. Kambanellis, himself a survivor of the Mauthausen-Gusen concentration camp, subsequently channeled his personal Holocaust experiences into an autobiographical novel. While acknowledging the predominant male perspectives on Holocaust experiences, this presentation also devotes special attention to the often-overlooked female voices. One of the most renowned and impactful female testimonies of the Holocaust is The Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank which provides an intimate and personal account of Anne’s experiences and emotions while hiding from Nazi persecution. In addition, a special focus will be on the testimonies of Ruth Klüger, who wrote about her Holocaust experience in her autobiography Still Alive: A Holocaust Girlhood Remembered. In the concluding segment of this presentation, a key objective is to explore the commonalities and distinctions among these works in relation to the emotions of love, fear, and hope. By examining these motives, we aim to discern the shared elements and divergences within the testimonies discussed. Additionally, we will try to critically examine the notion of generalizing from individual experiences, questioning whether it is possible to extract overarching conclusions from the multifaceted and deeply personal accounts presented.

Industrijalizacija Holokausta? (Američka) debata o instrumentalizaciji Šoe na prelomu veka

AB - In three books published at the turn of the millennium, the authors talk about the phenomenon of the pronounced presence and significance of the Holocaust in American society: Hilene Flanzbaum’s Americanization of the Holocaust (1999), Peter Novick’s Holocaust in American Life (1999) and Norman Finkelstein’s The Holocaust Industry: Reflections on the Exploitation of Jewish Suffering (2000). These works describe (and criticize) the post-Holocaust memorial world which is characterized by the commodification, commercialization and instrumentalization of the culture of remembrance. Even though each of these authors invoked/understood the term differently, the effect of their works was the introduction of the term „Holocaust industry“ into the public discourse. Today, it has has become an umbrella metaphor for a whole range of practices that represent the instrumentalization, commercialization and commodification of Holocaust remembrance. The paper deals with the process of (politicaleconomic) instrumentalization of the Holocaust, its normalization, naturalization, normativization and mechanization – in Western societies – and criticism of that process. The aim of the paper is to shed light on what is meant by the Holocaust industry and to open space for further reflection and problematization of the Holocaust discourse in the light of the warning that its current commodification and industrialization sends us.

Divine Genius, Subversive Hero, or Creative Entrepreneur? Exploring Various Facets of the Artist as a Mythical Figure

AB - People have always related art to the creation and transmission of myths. While myth as a theme in art has been thoroughly addressed, research about the “mythic” nature of the artist figure is far less common. The 20th and 21st centuries brought challenges to the status of art and artists in society, historically situated archetypes and stereotypes that we associate with the figure of the “artist” still survive to this day (e.g. “genius”, “subversive artists”, “child prodigy”, “eccentric”, etc.). In this paper, we set out to analyze various tropes used persistently to describe artists and explore how relevant the resulting myths are in (self) perceptions of Serbian contemporary artists. Our multidisciplinary approach to this topic combines a historicaltheoretical and empirical perspective. Through historical research of the relevant literature, we described and mapped the key tropes of the (mythical) artist figure as it developed in Western culture. In the theoretical analysis we address the inseparability of digital culture with everyday life of people today, which we call postdigital. We explore how the transition into contemporaneity affects the determination of the “artistfigure”, i.e., how it impacts the contemporary process of mythmaking. Following our historicaltheoretical analysis, we conducted five indepth interviews with contemporary Serbian artists to understand better how relevant the artist myth tropes are for their selfperception.

The effects of social movements’ cooperation with governmental and non-governmental organizations: a cross-country comparative perspective

AB - One of the characteristics of the latest wave of progressive social movements that have emerged globally – from anti-austerity and Occupy movements to movements protesting violence against women, to struggles for environmental justice, etc. – is the heightened mistrust: in the system of representative democracy, in political parties, but also other formal and established social actors, like unions and non-governmental organizations. Cooperation with governmental and non-governmental organizations (GOs and NGOs) or refusal to cooperate with them has become an issue of heated debate within many progressive social movements today. In this paper we will approach the subject through the findings obtained from three countries with different political cultures and social and political trust levels: Denmark, Poland and Serbia. The sample consists of six social movements: one environmental movement from each country, the refugee solidarity movement from Denmark, All-Polish Women Strike from Poland, and an anti-eviction movement from Serbia. We will analyse the social movements’ attitudes toward, and the perceived effects of their cooperation with GOs and NGOs, particularly concerning trust relations within the movements and beyond. In the analysis we will focus on the role of two factors: social movements’ concrete short and long-term goals and the role of political, social, and cultural contexts.

A Crisis of Political Solidarity in the European Union and the Western Balkans. Reactive vs. Institutional Solidarity

AB - While the narratives of democratization and Europeanization had significant
mobilizing potential in the Western Balkans during the 1990s and early 2000s, their
relevance has been largely undermined by recent political developments in the region
and growing crises of solidarity within the EU. This article offers a novel perspective
for understanding the prospects of an EU future for the Western Balkans, through a
discussion of the ideas and practices of political solidarity. It introduces the need to
differentiate between reactive and institutional solidarity, and argues that institutional
solidarity has a unique potential to mobilize the attention and commitment of citizens
by offering a projection of a durable and sustainable political community organized
around the principles of social justice and equality. Operationalizing this has become a
necessary precondition not only for the “European future” of the Western Balkans but
also for the future of the European project itself.

Theorizing solidarity through citizenship

AB - Attempts at defining solidarity inevitably face the following challenges (and possibly many more): 1) What is the “proper slot” for solidarity on the continuum from empathy to cooperation and mutual aid? 2) Are we discussing the same phenomenon when describing intra-group solidarity, in¬ter-group solidarity, communal solidarity, or international humanitarian solidarity (in what sense does the scale matter)? 3) Is it part of our biological predisposition (an evolutionary trait) or is it true that solidarity will not emerge spontaneously from social processes but can only be built (or eroded) through political action?

For this reason, solidarity is typically approached through strategies of differentiation and classification. Efforts are made to distinguish between social, civic, and political solidarity, or inter- and intra-group solidarity; or to argue for the difference between solidary attitudes and emotions on the one hand, and behaviour and collective action on the other. In my presentation, I will argue that the distinctive feature of solidarity, as a form of prosocial behaviour, is that it is constitutive of political communities. In particular, I will try to define solidarity through its historical and ontological relevance to citizenship.

I build on scholarship emphasizing the political nature of solidarity (Scholz), as “a principle that can inspire and guide action” (Arendt), as an ongoing commitment to “a community of interests, shared beliefs and goals” (hooks), “based on we-thinking” where “the target of concern” is “us together” rather than the wellbeing of the other (Laitinen and Pessi). I will also point to the fact that discourses and practices of solidarity play an important yet ambiguous role in any citizenship regime. It can promote interdependence and full inclusion, while at the same time solidifying the exclusionary “we” through the “destructive solidarity of us-against-them” (Sennett). The ambiguous role of solidarity, I argue, becomes especially obvious today, in neoliberal regimes, where calls for solidarity can be deployed to foster very distinct, arguably mutually opposing, kinds of political subjectivities and citizen activism.
