AB - The discursive difference between the ideal and material architectural object could almost be completely reduced to the issue of translation of the former into the latter. Within such a perspective, it becomes difficult to think of architectural design beyond the order of precedence, which defines the Form’s ontological autonomy from its material expression. In my presentation, I will try to reinterpret this relationship using Deleuze’s theory of fold. Regarding Leibniz’s distinction between the primitive and (derivative) plastic forces, through which Deleuze interprets the difference between soul and matter as the difference between the one and many, the concept of fold offers the possibility of a “twofold” reading of design methodology. Such duality would refer to overcoming the paradigm of “materialization” of form, that is, the always one-way translation process, understood as the multiplication of the one. In other words, Leibnizian hylomorphism is reflected in the concept of the fold on the level of its position between the corresponding processes of unification and multiplication. Using the concept of harmony, which is the unity of the multiple, Deleuze defines this kind of correspondence as a necessary twofoldness, i.e. “the double operation of transcendental actualization and realization” – the former as intrinsic and the second as extrinsic folding. Nevertheless, their mutual order remains an order of precedence: the intrinsic folding is necessarily primitive, or primary since its only reference is the self. In the methodology of architectural design, however, this order becomes impossible with the question of form being posed with respect to the problem of morphogenesis. Between the actual and the real, the morphogenetic process itself then turns into an infinite correspondence, whereby the primitive quality of form would have to identify with its plasticity.

Everybody Knows Everyone Here: Proximity, Precarity and Political Challenges of Being a Local Journalist

AB - Precarity can be conceived as a fundamental condition of present-day journalism. This notion has primarily been utilized to describe the transformations that occurred with changing employment conditions, market flexibilization, and financial insecurity. While this has become the norm, it often overlooks nuances of precarity that journalists face, such as its bodily and political aspects. In this paper, I explore the extent to which proximity to the events and individuals journalists report on configures their experience of political precarity. To that end, I employ the concept of affective proximity, which refers to how locals navigate and reconcile their emotional and embodied entanglement within events in their country and community. The profession of journalism has traditionally been thought of as predicated on distance. However, this is not often the case for local journalists, who are not only working in but also representing and participating in the community they report on. Being physically present and belonging to that community, these journalists encounter the people they write about in streets, grocery stores, and restaurants. This paper will be based on ten semi-structured, in-depth interviews with journalists working in local media in Serbia. Centered around questions of journalists’ status in the community, the research will shed further light on the perils and risks to their political and social personhood.

Credit, Debt and Money as Social Institutions of Trust

AB - While the notions of credit, debt and money are today almost exclusively associated with economic discourse, their semantic fields prove to be significantly wider and more complex. This article seeks to restore the repressed meanings of these three notions. Its aim consists of a deconstruction of the dominant economic narratives on credit, debt, money and trust, that would show that these concepts should be primarily considered as social, rather than solely economic institutions. Therefore, in the introduction we will look at the etymology of the word credit and disclose its semantic proximity with magic as a social practice. Furthermore, the first section will examine the intrinsic relation between debt and credit, departing from Marcel Hénaff’s three types of symbolic debt and exposing how these shape the financial credit in neoliberal capitalism and install the creditor-debtor relation (such as Maurizio Lazzarato describes it) as predominant at all levels of society. The second section shows how relations of credit and debt crystallize in the notion of money: firstly by exposing some major historical and anthropological insights about money; moreover, by considering money from an onto-axiological point of view as the knot in which all social relations of trust culminate; and finally, by relating the three different types of trust in money, proposed by French heterodox economists Michel Aglietta and André Orléan, to the three forms of symbolic debt, thus showing how credit, debt and money are fundamentally anchored in social relations.

Recognition as a Counterhegemonic Strategy

AB - Building on the analyses of cultural hegemony in the works of Nancy Fraser and Wendy Brown, I argue in the paper that the historic bloc (order of cultural hegemony) of post-Fordist capitalism is characterized by a particular dynamic between several ‘axes’ of hegemony that gives rise to the ‘paradox of engagement/disengagement’. The ‘progressive-expertocratic’ axis of hegemony creates a subject-position of the ‘engaged self’, a figure embodying a certain promise of political agency that is simultaneously obstructed by other, depoliticizing axes of hegemony. This dynamic is conducive to the rise of contemporary right-wing authoritarianism, which purports to fulfill this promise of political agency through a series of displacements – the counterhegemonic left, I argue, has so far not formulated an effective alternative to this strategy. In the second part, I explore the potential of Axel Honneth’s theory of recognition, in particular his concept of ‘interpersonal respect’, for grounding a left strategy of connecting (mutually articulating) the hegemonic figure of the ‘engaged self’ with a progressive politics of social transformation. To that end, I elaborate Honneth’s perspective by means of an argument about the role of trust in the context of societal crises that Igor Cvejić, Srđan Prodanović and I have recently formulated.

abstract = "Building on the analyses of cultural hegemony in the works of Nancy Fraser and Wendy Brown, I argue in the paper that the historic bloc (order of cultural hegemony) of post-Fordist capitalism is characterized by a particular dynamic between several ‘axes’ of hegemony that gives rise to the ‘paradox of engagement/disengagement’. To that end, I elaborate Honneth’s perspective by means of an argument about the role of trust in the context of societal crises that Igor Cvejić, Srđan Prodanović and I have recently formulated., Gradeći na temeljima analize kulturne hegemonije u delima Nensi Frejzer i Vendi Braun, u ovom radu argumentujem da se istorijski blok (poredak hegemonije) postfordističkog kapitalizma karakteriše specifičnom interakcijom nekoliko ’osa’ hegemonije koja proizvodi ’paradoks angažmana/dezangažmana’.

Trust and ‘Being Moved’ as Forms of Engagement in Situations of Uncertainty

AB - The main aim of this paper is to put emphasis on the role of trust and the emotion of being moved in a situation of crisis. I do not intend to address the general role, or all roles, these emotions might have in a crisis situation. My focus is rather on the role of these emotions in we-formation, presupposing that mutual engagement between the actors is the crucial constituent through which first-person singular shifts to first-person plural. I rely on Bennet Helm’s argument on how trust can function as an invitation to delineate communal norms in the new circumstances of uncertainty. Accordingly, by being trusted by other(s), the addressee is entitled to the expected responsibility for a situation: (1) the addressee is entitled as a member of a group (of us who are responsible in the situation); (2) the addressee is exposed to pressure to respond to a situation with responsibility. In the second part, I adopt Cova’s and Deonna’s argument about the function of the emotion of being moved. I suggest that in such a situation “being moved” expresses the readiness to reorganize one’s hierarchy of values in the light of new circumstances of mutual dependency. Taken together, trust and being moved portray the outline of mutual engagement between the actors in a crisis situation which aims to establish new communal norms and values.

AB - In this paper, I will investigate the complex relationship between intuition, trustworthiness, and trust. I will first examine some of the more prevalent accounts of trust which either (over)emphasize the cognitive aspect of generating trustworthiness, or indeed acknowledge the importance of affects and emotions, but only as part of a neatly organized dual structure − which is in essence complementary with the cognitive understanding of how we start trusting each other. I will argue that intuitions provide a more detailed insight into trustworthiness because they are simultaneously cognitive and affective in nature. I will also consider how inferential and holistic intuitions might influence our understanding of trustworthiness, especially in times of crisis.

Divine Genius, Subversive Hero, or Creative Entrepreneur? Exploring Various Facets of the Artist as a Mythical Figure

AB - People have always related art to the creation and transmission of myths. While myth as a theme in art has been thoroughly addressed, research about the “mythic” nature of the artist figure is far less common. The 20th and 21st centuries brought challenges to the status of art and artists in society, historically situated archetypes and stereotypes that we associate with the figure of the “artist” still survive to this day (e.g. “genius”, “subversive artists”, “child prodigy”, “eccentric”, etc.). In this paper, we set out to analyze various tropes used persistently to describe artists and explore how relevant the resulting myths are in (self) perceptions of Serbian contemporary artists. Our multidisciplinary approach to this topic combines a historicaltheoretical and empirical perspective. Through historical research of the relevant literature, we described and mapped the key tropes of the (mythical) artist figure as it developed in Western culture. In the theoretical analysis we address the inseparability of digital culture with everyday life of people today, which we call postdigital. We explore how the transition into contemporaneity affects the determination of the “artistfigure”, i.e., how it impacts the contemporary process of mythmaking. Following our historicaltheoretical analysis, we conducted five indepth interviews with contemporary Serbian artists to understand better how relevant the artist myth tropes are for their selfperception.

A Crisis of Political Solidarity in the European Union and the Western Balkans. Reactive vs. Institutional Solidarity

AB - While the narratives of democratization and Europeanization had significant
mobilizing potential in the Western Balkans during the 1990s and early 2000s, their
relevance has been largely undermined by recent political developments in the region
and growing crises of solidarity within the EU. This article offers a novel perspective
for understanding the prospects of an EU future for the Western Balkans, through a
discussion of the ideas and practices of political solidarity. It introduces the need to
differentiate between reactive and institutional solidarity, and argues that institutional
solidarity has a unique potential to mobilize the attention and commitment of citizens
by offering a projection of a durable and sustainable political community organized
around the principles of social justice and equality. Operationalizing this has become a
necessary precondition not only for the “European future” of the Western Balkans but
also for the future of the European project itself.

Theorizing solidarity through citizenship

AB - Attempts at defining solidarity inevitably face the following challenges (and possibly many more): 1) What is the “proper slot” for solidarity on the continuum from empathy to cooperation and mutual aid? 2) Are we discussing the same phenomenon when describing intra-group solidarity, in¬ter-group solidarity, communal solidarity, or international humanitarian solidarity (in what sense does the scale matter)? 3) Is it part of our biological predisposition (an evolutionary trait) or is it true that solidarity will not emerge spontaneously from social processes but can only be built (or eroded) through political action?

For this reason, solidarity is typically approached through strategies of differentiation and classification. Efforts are made to distinguish between social, civic, and political solidarity, or inter- and intra-group solidarity; or to argue for the difference between solidary attitudes and emotions on the one hand, and behaviour and collective action on the other. In my presentation, I will argue that the distinctive feature of solidarity, as a form of prosocial behaviour, is that it is constitutive of political communities. In particular, I will try to define solidarity through its historical and ontological relevance to citizenship.

I build on scholarship emphasizing the political nature of solidarity (Scholz), as “a principle that can inspire and guide action” (Arendt), as an ongoing commitment to “a community of interests, shared beliefs and goals” (hooks), “based on we-thinking” where “the target of concern” is “us together” rather than the wellbeing of the other (Laitinen and Pessi). I will also point to the fact that discourses and practices of solidarity play an important yet ambiguous role in any citizenship regime. It can promote interdependence and full inclusion, while at the same time solidifying the exclusionary “we” through the “destructive solidarity of us-against-them” (Sennett). The ambiguous role of solidarity, I argue, becomes especially obvious today, in neoliberal regimes, where calls for solidarity can be deployed to foster very distinct, arguably mutually opposing, kinds of political subjectivities and citizen activism.

Magijsko mišljenje i magijsko objašnjenje u filozofiji i psihologiji

AB - The aim of the paper is to offer an overview of the long-lasting friendship between
Georges Florovsky and St Justin Popović, as well as of their common project to build
an Orthodox theological synthesis on the basis of the patristic tradition. The paper
focuses on three periods from Florovsky’s and Popović’s lives, from late 1910 and to
early 1920, from late 1920s to late 1930s, and finally on 1940s. I argue that in the first
period both authors developed their theological visions relying on Solovyov and
Florensky, on the one hand, and in opposition to the ecclesial nationalism of the
Slavophiles and conservative Orthodox hierarchs, on the other hand. Further, I
investigate how during the late 1920s and 1930s both authors searched for an
Orthodox synthesis mostly in dialogue with their Orthodox predecessors, especially
Solovyov, Florensky and Bulgakov, as well as the modern western philosophical
tradition. The focus will shift then to the 1940s, which was characterized by frequent
meetings between Florovsky and Popović in Belgrade, Yugoslavia. I argue that in this
period the Church Fathers became for both authors the golden standard for Orthodox
theology, and the idea of the neo-patristic synthesis developed in the full scale.
