AB - While the notions of credit, debt and money are today almost exclusively associated with economic discourse, their semantic fields prove to be significantly wider and more complex. This article seeks to restore the repressed meanings of these three notions. Its aim consists of a deconstruction of the dominant economic narratives on credit, debt, money and trust, that would show that these concepts should be primarily considered as social, rather than solely economic institutions. Therefore, in the introduction we will look at the etymology of the word credit and disclose its semantic proximity with magic as a social practice. Furthermore, the first section will examine the intrinsic relation between debt and credit, departing from Marcel Hénaff’s three types of symbolic debt and exposing how these shape the financial credit in neoliberal capitalism and install the creditor-debtor relation (such as Maurizio Lazzarato describes it) as predominant at all levels of society. The second section shows how relations of credit and debt crystallize in the notion of money: firstly by exposing some major historical and anthropological insights about money; moreover, by considering money from an onto-axiological point of view as the knot in which all social relations of trust culminate; and finally, by relating the three different types of trust in money, proposed by French heterodox economists Michel Aglietta and André Orléan, to the three forms of symbolic debt, thus showing how credit, debt and money are fundamentally anchored in social relations.

AB - In this article we will consider, in a speculative manner, a specific form of subjectivity that arises from a fundamental condition that trust imposes on the existence of the subject. Departing from the hypothesis that trust tends towards a formation of sub-jectivity that could exist independently, as a totality and separateness from world, we will try to shed that illusion, showing thus the constitutively fragmentary nature of the subject of trust, as well as its limits and tears from which it is made. While examining this particular ontogenesis, we will also question the psychological and epistemologi-cal condition which trust imposes on the subject in its becoming. Freudian psycho-analysis and Sartre’s ontological phenomenology will provide us with our main notional tools which will be reconsidered while serving our own analyses. Through their critical superposition, we will tend to obtain an optimal tool for a deconstruction of the sub-ject of trust, while also deconstructing some traditionally opposed categories, such as the unconscious and the conscious, subject and object, existence and becoming, belief and knowledge, etc.

From Devotion to Commitment: Towards a Critical Ontology of Engagement

AB - This article approaches the notion of engagement from the perspective of critical ontology. With language as the starting point of its hermeneutic task, it commences with an etymological analyses of diverse Indo-European words gravitating around the semantic field of the notion of engagement. From these introductory insights obtained by an exercise in comparative linguistics, devotion and commitment are mapped as two opposite, yet inseparable, modes of being of engagement. Both of these modes seem to condition engagement in an ontologically disparate manner. While examining their fundamental structures, some of the canonical concepts of history of philosophy such as being, existence, subjectivity, or world – and also some of its constitutive binary oppositions such as body/mind, individual/collective, transcendence/immanence, light/darkness and sacred/secular – will be reconsidered through the prism of different ontological dispositions that devotion and commitment impose respectively on engagement. The overall aim of this investigation is to bring forth the main existential characteristics of being-engaged, by interpreting the roles of who, where, and what of engagement, and in order to provide a fundamental conceptual apparatus for a critical ontology of engagement.
