In No Time. Temporal Foundations of the Concept of Competency

AB - The paper deals with the construction of architec tural competency, starting from the entwinement of
the terms competency and competence. Following the
etymology of the two words, we define the distinc tion between them through the problem of time. On
the one hand, competence is atemporal in nature,
while on the other hand, competency is necessarily
directed at the present. The bond with the present is
explained by defining competency as the capacity to
produce the new, understood as Deleuzian difference,
which objectifies time and always puts it in the order
of the present. In the discipline of architecture, the
concept of competency is defined through the problem
of the extensiveness of theory, which obviates the
production of the new. In that sense, competency is
interpreted as the ability to preserve the (conceptual)
unity of the singular new, despite the impossibility of
reconstructing the real as a whole.

Using a variety of texts that thematize the object, a few passages from Hegel, we attempt to re-veal connections between key architectural (and not only architectural) concepts, form a given epistemological order, and differentiate amongst basic acts and operations that could be ascribed to the object.

AB - This paper aims at hypothesizing that the issue of technology could never be considered separate from the creative act. We develop the hypothesis starting from Heidegger’s
opposition of technology and the poietic, which we interpret through the dialectic between the
performative and constative function of the hand. To overcome the Heideggerian problem of
Enframing, we introduce the question of singularity inherent in every poietic activity which,
however, does not result in conceiving technology as an instrument. When defining the nature
of such poietic singularization we employ Spinoza’s concept of an inadequate idea – an idea
that involves its cause but does not explain it. The inherent negativity of the inadequate idea
generates the sphere in which the new appears as radical otherness. But in order to produce the
new, that is, to perform it, technology has to be conceptualized and thus made an instrument
– a singular instrument of the creative act.

What Is an Architectural Concept? The “Concept” of Deleuze and “Project” of Eisenman

Vesnić, Snežana

(Beograd : Institut za filozofiju i društvenu teoriju, 2017)

TY - JOUR

PY - 2017
UR - http://rifdt.instifdt.bg.ac.rs/123456789/1395
AB - Two great theories – one in philosophy, one in architecture – emerge
nearly simultaneously in the twentieth century: Gilles Deleuze’s understanding of the “concept,” that is, defining philosophy as an activity that produces concepts, and Peter Eisenman’s idea of the “project” as a platform, “position,” or “theory” of an architect. My intention is to suggest and problematize the idea of the concept as “capacity” or “potentiality” implying the production of a multitude of “concepts” or varying “conceptions.” Deleuze’s great significance for architecture of this
century allowed for the construction of the “concept” as “author’s potential,” the source of activity and creative architectural acts. An
architectural concept, determined in the course of the text, and thanks to which architectural terminology is redefined, could potentially be quite useful in philosophy and theory of the subject.

abstract = "Two great theories – one in philosophy, one in architecture – emerge
nearly simultaneously in the twentieth century: Gilles Deleuze’s understanding of the “concept,” that is, defining philosophy as an activity that produces concepts, and Peter Eisenman’s idea of the “project” as a platform, “position,” or “theory” of an architect.
An
architectural concept, determined in the course of the text, and thanks to which architectural terminology is redefined, could potentially be quite useful in philosophy and theory of the subject., Dve velike teorije – jedna u filozofiji, jedna u arhitekturi – pojavljuju se skoro simultano u dvadesetom veku: Žil Delezovo razumevanje „koncepta“, odnosno, definisanje filozofije kao aktivnosti koja „proizvodi“ koncepte, i Piter Аjzenmanova
