AB - Addressing the relationship among social critique, violence, and domination, Violence and Reflexivity: The Place of Critique in the Reality of Domination examines a critique of violent and unjust social arrangements that transcends the Enlightenment/postmodern opposition. This critique surpasses the “reflexive violence” of classical enlightenment universalism without committing the “violence of reflexivity” by negating any possibility of collective radical social engagement. The unifying thread of the collection, edited by Marjan Ivković, Adriana Zaharijević, and Gazela Pudar-Draško, is a sensitivity to the field of tension created by these extremes, especially for the issue of how to articulate a non-violent critique that is nevertheless “militant,” in the sense that it creates a rupture in an institutionalized order of violence. In Part One, the contributors examine the theoretical resources that help us move beyond the reflexive violence of the classical Enlightenment social critique in our quest for justice and non-domination. Part Two brings together nuanced attempts to reconsider the dominant modern understandings of violence, subjectivity, and society without succumbing to the violence of reflexivity that characterizes radically anti-Enlightenment standpoints.

On Butler’s Theory of Agency

AB - This essay addresses the notion of agency in Judith Butler’s work. Its central claim is that her political philosophy revolves around a specific understanding of agency, even a theory of agency, which has not as yet received due attention. The first part of the essay examines two main thought traditions in which agency became an operational notion, through the lenses of intentionality and constraints, voluntarism and determinism. The second part elaborates on the centrality of the body, the social, and the power in Butler’s understanding of agency, conjoining agency with performativity. The essay argues that agency in Butler exceeds freedom, autonomy, and liberation, and has a potent political meaning of its own.

AB - During the last decade the notion of gender (in gender equality, gender
mainstreaming, theory & studies) increasingly began to figure as a threat to the
‘common man’, family, nation and the state – despite the fact that gender equality
has not been fully reached anywhere in the world. Gender functions as a ‘symbolic
glue’ or an obscure source for divergent, and at times contradictory grievances.
Although anti-gender discourses tend to present them as particular to a given nation, the trend is pointedly international. The paper demonstrates that anti-gender
discourses belong to an arsenal of right-wing populist political tools aimed at
dismantling democracy, equality and attained liberties. We focus on various cases,
Serbian among them. Our aim is to discern the discursive patterns that frame antigender attitudes, and to show that the context in which they appear replicates itself
in different national settings.

Independent and Invulnerable: Politics of an Individual

AB - When from the early 1980s onwards a reconfiguration of the politics of dependence began to take place, followed by a thorough dismantling of welfarism and real-socialism, individuals were called upon to use their freedom to self-actualize –to depend only on their own wits and capacities to deal with globalized insecurities. Government could no longer be interested in taking care of the governed. The governed needed to become more dependent on themselves, and less dependent on the state in particular. The governed, in other words, needed to be less vulnerable. It was repeated time and again that the welfare of individuals is best secured and promoted when they are prompted to be independent, to use all their might and imagination to be the only carers for themselves. To not be cared for by others implies a certain level of imagined invulnerability. Each and every one of us –simply by being individuals– has the capacity to demonstrate one’s sovereignty over oneself through one’s independence.
Such reprogrammed neo-Victorian language urges us to meticulously revisit its source. The link between early liberalism and neoliberalism, at least in their shared tendency to produce strong aversion to dependence and vulnerability, to correlate it with utter abjection, is by no means accidental. I will claim that the notion of independence is inextricable from an incessant circuit of exclusions, systemic blockades, restrictions or obstructions of opportunities, rights and resources. It is, however also closely related to a specific epistemic and normative configuration of the creature who is the bearer of independence, i.e. a sovereign individual who governs himself.

AB - The article examines the patient-doctor relationship, relying on Michel Foucault’s concept of the clinical gaze. We argue that during the last decades, a profound transformation
of the social nature of medicine took place, one that Foucault’s understanding of the clinical gaze cannot adequately account for. First, the article offers an elaboration of the three-node network of clinical gaze, the clinic, and nosology to explain the positioning of the doctor and the patient within the specific social ontology generated by the rise of medicine. We then discuss intensive but irresolute developments brought by technological advancements, especially the X-ray tube. Finally, we argue that in the contemporary clinic, equipped with a plethora of
sophisticated devices, the position of the doctor endured the most radical transformation in comparison with Foucault’s proponent of the clinical gaze at the dawn of modern medicine.

AB - Reading Robinson Crusoe 300 years after its first publication can help us understand two major fantasies of our current moment: the desire to be in complete possession of oneself and thus invulnerable to the endless reconfigurations of the world one merely happens to be part of; and the desire to return to the times when society was ordained as an aggregate of self-contained, self-actualizing individuals. Both fantasies have been invested in the creation of the two paradigmatic figures of our time – the neoliberal homo economicus and the white masculine master of his property and affairs. Both desires have, additionally, rested upon numerous erasures not only of vulnerability and inter/dependence in general, but also and significantly of the body. I argue, however, that the desire to be bodiless goes hand in hand with the desire to place and possess bodies, as material or symbolic property, which are for various reasons denied the capacity to be self-actualizing, indivisible, and independent. Robinson Crusoe works as a fictional figure with which a self-possessed master identifies with and desires to return to.

Rethinking Vulnerability and Exclusion. Historical and Critical Essays

AB - This volume presents an attempt to conjoin two related, but in essence deeply problematic notions: vulnerability and exclusion. Their relationship today seems unambiguous: if one is excluded, one is, in all probability, vulnerable and vice versa. We take this as a given. However, we also wish to see what lies behind that givenness, and in a certain sense produces it. Like many of the notions that have taken shape in philosophy and social theory, once they become part of the policy language of righting wrongs, they tend to become hollow and stripped of their multiple layers of meaning. Often, they portray a phenomenon as something that can be singled out and cast outside a larger and inevitably more complex frame. Both exclusion and vulnerability are cases in point: certain groups/populations/identities are vulnerable, thus actions need to be taken to alleviate their vulnerability; certain groups/populations/identities are excluded, and so ways to include them need to be found.
Without questioning the fact that there are indeed such groups, assembled and categorized as vulnerable and/or excluded, we wanted to understand why this is the case; more specifically, in what ways these groups are related to others (those deemed ‘invulnerable’ or those excluded on some different basis); how, and from where, the boundary between the excluded and the included arises; what the stakes of ‘invulnerability’ (to which the alleviation of vulnerability supposedly leads) might be; in what ways such categorizations preclude or forestall the agency of the excluded/the vulnerable. What might be the conclusive frame to which actions of inclusion and alleviation of vulnerability lead – one in which all are recognized as vulnerable and where the notion of exclusion has ultimately lost its meaning, or one in which the desired invulnerable individuals monitor the boundaries of their communities or nation-states, caring for the included and warding off those who do not belong? The questions themselves are certainly not new, although the answers to them have assumed a specific form and content in the 21st century. With this volume we want to emphasize both their novelty and their deep-seatedness. Following a variety of critical approaches, all of the contributions here attempt to shed light on the dense theoretical content and complex conceptual history of such notions.

Social Ontology: Butler via Arendt via Loidolt

AB - This short contribution is written on the occasion of the book discussion of Sophie Loidolt’s Phenomenology of Plurality: Hannah Arendt on Political Intersubjectivity (2018) at the Institute for Philosophy and Social Theory. It presents an attempt to read the two key notions Loidolt elaborates in her book – spaces of meaning and spaces of the public and private – from a critical perspective offered by Judith Butler’s taking up of Arendt’s work. Offering Butler’s conception of social ontology through several major points of contestation with Arendt, I argue against an all too simple reduction of her understanding of the political and normativity to poststructuralist ones.
AB - Ovaj kratak doprinos napisan je povodom diskusije o knjizi Phenomenology of Plurality: Hannah Arendt on Political Intersubjectivity Sofi Lojdolt na Institutu za filozofiju i društvenu teoriju. On predstavlja pokušaj čitanja dva ključna pojma koja Lojdolt izlaže u svojoj knjizi – prostori značenja i prostori javnog i privatnog – iz kritičke perspektive koju Džudit Batler nudi baveći se radom Arentove. Razmatrajući koncepciju socijalne ontologije Batler kroz nekoliko značajnih tačaka njene rasprave sa Arent zalagaću se protiv olake redukcije njenih shvatanja političkog i normativnog na poststrukturalistička shvatanja.

AB - The text considers the possibility of establishing and maintaining alternative communities, taking as an example the Women's Peace Coalition between Kosovo Women Network and the Serbian Women in Black network. The principal question put forward is whether communities that surpass identitarian belonging are possible, and how these communities relate to “communities” determined territorially, nationally (by a nation state), as well as how they relate to artificial and symbolic supranational bodies. The main aim is the examination of the political potential of a community that wishes to be grounded on the logic of peace and the rejection of the logic of possession (following the slogan “people, not territories”). A community of women activists in the shape of the Women's Peace Coalition is defined as a community of the dispossessed, a term developed following the work of Judith Butler and Athena Athanasiou. This pregnant philosophical concept is introduced in order to offer a new approach to the context of an ambivalent, divided, inoperative state, with long-festering wounds of war.

AB - Thus, my main interest here is in what images of horror produce. What happens to reason when confronted with an image of something that surpasses the powers of explanation or rational reconciliation with the seen? Surmising that the frames of horror – which re-present violence in different ways – equally exercise a certain form of violence over us, I wonder in which part of us this violence takes place. But what if we want, as indeed many have, to use precisely these images as the means for a critique or, further, for the development of a strong ethico-political stance? Is it possible to be both numb and critical? What is critique, and what are our critical capacities, when sifted through violent images – images of violence and images exercising violence? What role do affects play in our being ‘seized’ and what – if anything – propels us to act against violence by being exposed to it?

ideology is a global phenomenon established on a strong resistance to
changes in the domain of gender, sexuality and family. Its strategies
re-define the notion of subversion, demonstrating that subversion
nowadays can also be very conservative.Although anti-gender ideology
appears as a cultural form of resistance which regularly evokes religion,
the text claims that it works primarily as a political tool, a secular as
much as a religious instrument for defining the desirable society of the
21st century. The first part of the text demonstrates the paradoxical,
even contradictory articulations of the claims in support of anti-gender
ideology. A special emphasis is put on what becomes defined as the
non-scientific character of gender, the misuse and abuse of language
of gender, and its covert political aspirations which supposedly hide
themselves behind the neutrality ofscience. In the second part ofthe text,
the role of religion, Roman Catholic and Serbian Orthodox religions in
particular, is briefly examined. In the last section, I try to demonstrate
how gender allowed for an intersection of various oppositions to the
rearticulations of the meanings of the right, the human, freedom and
equality.

Habemus gender. The Serbian case

AB - The article discusses the emergence of 'gender ideology' in Serbia, focusing on the recent public outcry against the introduction of education packages on gendered violence in schools. The case demonstrates that this concerted action has been undertaken not by the 'common people' it purportedly represents, but by conservative academics. The struggle against 'gender ideology' divides 'the people' into two camps, upholding the values of the 'normal' (Serbian) family: that is, a middle-class, well-to-do family that wants to be left alone, unaffected and undisturbed by intrusions of the state. The article demonstrates the validity of the claim that gender acts as 'symbolic glue' in contemporary conservative struggles across Europe.

AB - The text is based on two premises. The first is that we live in the times of neoliberalism, and
the second is that the political subject of neoliberalism is the individual, the “one” qualified as
indivisible, independent, sole owner of one’s self. To define what an individual is, I will revisit
several 19th-century claims which at the same time posit individual as an empty universal – anyone qualifies for entitlement of an individual – and reveal it as profoundly exclusionary – as
the holder of entitlements. I will claim that the indivisibility of an individual is also the basis for
its understanding as sovereign and self-actualized. Liberal politicization of a sovereign possessor of interests introduces not only homo oeconomicus, but it also integrates economic mode of
governmentality into the sphere of the political, it becoming a space of incessant play of exclusions and inclusions. If another kind of political imaginary is to be developed, I argue we need
to distance ourselves from the figure of the individual, bearing in mind that homo oeconomicus
triumphs today as the exhaustive figure of the human, amidst the patently unequal distribution
not only of precarity but also of vulnerability. Critical engagement with neoliberalism assumes
engaging with the political centrality of a figure of an agentic individual
