AB - The presentation aims to account for the social dynamics that have taken place in the Hungarian community in Serbia since 2010 and that have not yet been parts of academic debates. Namely, for Vojvodina Hungarians, the economic hardships and the unfavorable political climate that most citizens of Serbia have felt have been alleviated by the possibility to obtain Hungarian citizenship. As a result of this, the province has seen a new wave of mass emigration of the members of this ethnic group, that has been reflected in the data from the latest census of 2021, but also novel ways of “in-betweenness” of residencies and identifications. Academically, the Vojvodina Hungarian community has been tackled mainly within the field of minority studies, which has yielded important findings but fails to explain current changes in community members’ identification. On the other hand, diaspora studies has traditionally focused on emigrees that have moved that have changed countries “for good” and has been slow to incorporate phenomena such as commuting, temporary residency, parallel cultural ties with two societies, as well as issues of minority identity, language, and culture. I examine the common themes in the two Facebook pages popular among Hungarians from Serbia, Rokon Ilonka Copyright and University of Bótelőtt. I argue that the forms and contents in these online platforms not only represent and revoke but also construct a new form of Vojvodina Hungarian identity, in which community membership does not rest on being in, but on being from Vojvodina, and is grounded in sharing a certain humor, knowledge, language, and experiences. I contend that to understand the complex dynamics of identification of ethnic minority communities with excessive cross-border characteristic such as Vojvodina Hungarians, an approach that merges the lens of ethnic minority and diaspora studies is needed.

AB - The article deals with positionality, mainly from an Eastern European perspective, especially with regard to females, precarious and ethnic minority researchers or those with other identity features that might place them in a marginal position in the academic field. Through personal, and more general examples, we discuss the issues such as the dichotomy of home and elsewhere, privilege vs disadvantage, the dilemmas of field and institutional research, and divided loyalty vis-à-vis one’s own group and the scientific community.

Ezeket a témákat két, a vajdasági magyarok körében népszerű Facebook oldal, a Rokon Ilonka Copyright és a University of Bótelőtt esetében vizsgálom.

AB - This article explores Yugoslav education policy in Vojvodina (Serbia), one of the most multilingual regions of the country, which was implemented in the period between the 1960s and 1980s through the school subject the ‘Language of social environment’ (LSE). Based on archival and field research, this case study is devoted to the school subject Hungarian as LSE intended for students whose L1 was Serbo-Croatian. The article addresses the discourses of policy makers who advocated for the introduction of LSE and how former students and teachers remember the school subject, which was abolished in the 1990s. The analysis shows that LSE was based on the values of societal multilingualism for all members of society and in line with a ‘language-as-resource’ orientation to language planning and policy, both as an etic concept at top-down policy level and as an emic concept at local level where nostalgic memories and bottom-up initiatives for its reintroduction emerged.

AB - Ida Sabo / Szabó Ida was born in 1915 in Pécs as an illegitimate daughter of a Subotica
Hungarian working class mother and a Jewish father from Pécs. She grew up in Subotica, took
part in the activities of the illegal Communists Party there, as well as later in Ljubljana. After the
Second World War she moved to Novi Sad and took on several important functions in the
League of Communists of Vojvodina. She was a devout antinationalist and much of her work
was focused on women’s emancipation. Her life and work are completely absent from Vojvodina
Hungarian historiography, while aspects of her career dealing with the “national question” are
ignored in history-writing in Serbo-Croatian language(s). My work on Szabó Ida is an attempt to
see these silenced aspects and the reasons for their silencing, and to show her career in a light
that integrates both the gendered and the national aspects of her 101 years long life.

„Creating the Illusion of Speaking Romanian Well”: Hungarian Speakers’ Teaching and Learning the Majority Language in Romania

AB - The case study of the article is translanguaging as an educational
strategy in preparation for the graduation exam in Romanian language and
literature in a Hungarian school in Miercurea Ciuc/Csíkszereda, Romania.
Romanian language competence scores are at the bottom of national rankings in
this Hungarian-majority town in Szeklerland. Students who speak a minority
language have their knowledge of the majority language evaluated in the
graduation exam in Romanian language and literature based on the same criteria
as first-language speakers’, which has strong implications for their participation
in Romanian society. The main research question of this ethnographically
informed article is how translanguaging happens in a classroom where students’
first language is being used with the aim of facilitating performance in their
second language. The article argues that in the classrooms where the research
was conducted, translanguaging is a strategy that negotiates between students’
educational needs in the local environment and the expectation espoused by the
state to perform as if they were monolingual Romanian speakers. Similarly,
students use translanguaging to strategize between the curricular expectations
and their language performance. Yet, I argue that in this case study the emancipatory potential of translanguaging is limited due to ethnolinguistic hierarchies that remain unchallenged.

Visiting Auntie Ilonka: Virtual Homecoming to a Vojvodina Hungarian Village

AB - The presentation discusses Rokon Ilonka Copyright and University of Botelott, two Facebook pages, popular among Hungarians from Vojvodina (Serbia). The two pages post memes on the topics of everyday life in Vojvodina and use a local dialect of Hungarian that is commonly regarded as uneducated and “peasant”. Through an analysis of the posted memes and the comments to them in the two pages, interviews with their authors, as well as the answers of the followers of the University of Botelott page, I explore the main themes in the current Vojvodina Hungarian community. In the past decade, a large number of Vojvodina Hungarians emigrated to Western Europe. This has made the community increasingly diasporic, and together with economic and ecological disadvantages, the emigration created a negative (self-)vision of the community. In the presentation I show that using a sub-standard and stigmatized dialect as a way of speaking mastered only by the members of the community transforms belonging to it into a positive experience. Second, I argue that the topics of everyday life in Vojvodina imbued with humor and nostalgia maintain the community regardless of the place of residence. The topics of the memes and comments, the language use, the humor and the nostalgia therefore construct an affirmative minority and/or diaspora identity of the followers of the page.

AB - The presentation and the paper aim at exploring forms of localized identities among Hungarian speakers in Vojvodina, Serbia through the discourse analysis of two Facebook pages. The two pages, whose titles can roughly be translated as Auntie Ilonka and University in Front of the Store, circulate content in the form of memes that build on a rural Vojvodinian Hungarian identity. Using a vernacular that is both rural, stigmatized as “peasant”, “uneducated” and “incorrect” and hybridized with Serbian phrases, the two pages mimic the form and the content elderly people in Hungarian villages in Serbia use in their speech. Yet, I argue, the aim of the pages is not mere mockery, but the memes and the numerous comments under them serve to recreate an imaginary home for the participants. The need for this recreation emerge as a result of social change in Vojvodina Hungarian society. First, it follows a generational shift, because few of younger and middle-aged Hungarians from Vojvodina still use the dialect captured in the Facebook pages. Second, the vernacular used in the memes is also class-based, and vanishing with urbanization and the social mobility of the younger generation. Third, the loss of the dialect and the cultural references in the Facebook pages is connected to a demographic change: as Hungarians from Vojvodina have been leaving the region in large numbers in the past decades, fora such as Auntie Ilonka and University in Front of the Store are becoming a virtual space of identity, home and nostalgia.

“We strongly encourage qualified women and minorities to apply”: Ethnicity, language and gender as personal, political and epistemological positions

AB - Using auto-ethnography, the presentation/paper will explore the possibilities and challenges offered
to a female researcher coming from a post-Yugoslav minority background -- myself. While personal,
the account aims at bringing to light some of the wider structural dimensions of the seemingly
individual/private decisions, opportunities and difficulties, reframing them as collective/public. My
argument concerns the relevance of engaging with not only the researchers’ personal but also their
institutional and cultural positionalities. I will construct it through a case study of the experience of
conducting research about multilingualism and state-language learning by members of the Hungarian
minorities in three fieldwork sites: Vojvodina, Transylvania and Prekmurje with the affiliation to the
University of Oslo. My paper will relate to contemporary sociolinguistic literature that is starting to
acknowledge that multilingualism is not only a resource but can be a barrier as well, in particular at
the labor market – of which the academia is no exception. The other set of literature the paper will
use is that on academic precarity with an additional focus of a gendered perspective.
The presentation will start by a personal recollection of my interest in the topic as well as the
institutional background of undertaking the research in the three locations. The narratives about the
personal and the institutional setup will serve not merely as “context” or “background”, but I see
them co-constitutive of my study. The meta-research will therefore attempt to show some of the
(im)possible positions I have taken in my research. These are scattered around various axes, some of which are shared with interlocutors and others that distance the researcher. These include the
presence or the lack of the following: knowledge of the state language, the shared historical legacy of
Yugoslavia, the socialist heritage, a linguistic dialect spoken, gender, age, class, education, political
ideology, etc. These positions however do not only have consequences for the interpretation of the
“research material” and the “results” but are positions negotiated on another level: as a precarious
female researcher from the former Yugoslavia in Western academia. The paper will therefore also
touch upon dilemmas related to: What are the career strategies available to a post-Yugoslav female
postdoc? Being Hungarian, is she (post-)Yugoslav at all? Where does gender play into her roles?
What are the personal and academic qualities that are valorized and what are the traits that can
hinder her career? What perspectives and what methodologies accessible to her and why she is
discouraged from taking others? What issues is she supposed to discuss and what shall she better be silent about when presenting the research? Where is the demarcation line between East and West, knowledge production and reproduction, personal and political? Even though raising questions primarily about post-Yugoslav academic subjectivities, the issues the paper engages with are also related to ethno-national epistemologies and to (im)possibilities of a “safe distance” as a researcher from the former Yugoslavia precariously producing knowledge in a Western (Northern) academic institution.

AB - The paper explores practices of state language acquisition in educational settings in Vojvodina by minority Hungarian language speakers in contemporary Vojvodina, Serbia. The research is based on fieldwork material, including interviews with students, teachers and parents and observations in secondary schools in several locations in Vojvodina, mainly in classes of Serbian as a second language but also at less formal occasions where Serbian language is learned and used. The paper deals with issues such as students' motivation, strategies, costs and benefits of learning Serbian as well as factors that influence these. The paper discusses how those who due to their ethnolinguistic identification do not fit into the dominant national frame navigate the relationship between majority and minority, ethnicity and citizenship.

Fortress under Siege: Narratives of Ethnic Conflict and Discrimination among Hungarian Youth in Vojvodina

AB - This paper analyzes narratives of ethnic conflict among Hungarian and Serbian youth in Vojvodina. These experiences are narrated by Hungarian young people from Mali Iđoš in the Central Bačka region in the interviews with the author of the paper, and the excerpts of the transcripts are analyzed according to the Labovian socio-linguistic scheme. It argues that narrative structure varies according to the interlocutor’s gender; however, all narratives demonstrate similarity in terms of positioning the protagonists of such events as committing subjects and suffering objects. In addition, the narratives are highly script-like, which suggests a lack of diversity in the available
discursive frames for narrating the experience of conflicts perceived as ethnically motivated. The most common script, which the interlocutors of this research use as well, constructs and justifies ethnic groups as simultaneously in confrontation with and isolated from each other, linguistically, culturally and geographically, and articulates interethnic experiences as a threat.
AB - Ovaj članak analizira narative o etničkim sukobima među mađarskom i srpskom omladinom u Vojvodini.

AB - In my presentation, I will describe the initial premises of my prospective research on second language teaching and learning in Vojvodina and Transylvania. My project will include a synchronic exploration of ethno-linguistic belonging and interethnic communication in the former Habsburg Monarchy and a diachronic perspective from 1918 until today. My main research aim is to unpack the “hidden curriculum” of the instruction of the state language and the minority language in Vojvodina and Transylvania: to examine the construction and representation of national communities and the nature of the boundaries between them, and to get a better understanding of continuities and ruptures in language policy, interethnic relations and language education in the two regions.
I will explore second language acquisition both top-down and bottom-up. In terms of the former, I will tackle methods of teaching and analyze textbooks and documents of language and education policy related to second language learning, such as supranational and national charters and guidelines, laws and regulations, curricula and textbooks, talk with policy- makers, curriculum-makers, publishers and authors of textbooks, professors of future teachers of Serbian, Hungarian and Romanian as second language and teachers, etc. The bottom-up end of second language teaching will be dealing with past and present practices of the second language acquisition and look into how individuals receive and perceive the instruction of the second language.
I will draw on literature on ethnic identification, interactions and minority-majority relations in multicultural contexts; on studies about the role of language and education in nation- building processes and on European multilingualism; as well as on works specifically dealing with Serbian-Hungarian and Romanian-Hungarian bilingualism in Vojvodina and Transylvania respectively.
