AB - In three books published at the turn of the millennium, the authors talk about the phenomenon of the pronounced presence and significance of the Holocaust in American society: Hilene Flanzbaum’s Americanization of the Holocaust (1999), Peter Novick’s Holocaust in American Life (1999) and Norman Finkelstein’s The Holocaust Industry: Reflections on the Exploitation of Jewish Suffering (2000). These works describe (and criticize) the post-Holocaust memorial world which is characterized by the commodification, commercialization and instrumentalization of the culture of remembrance. Even though each of these authors invoked/understood the term differently, the effect of their works was the introduction of the term „Holocaust industry“ into the public discourse. Today, it has has become an umbrella metaphor for a whole range of practices that represent the instrumentalization, commercialization and commodification of Holocaust remembrance. The paper deals with the process of (politicaleconomic) instrumentalization of the Holocaust, its normalization, naturalization, normativization and mechanization – in Western societies – and criticism of that process. The aim of the paper is to shed light on what is meant by the Holocaust industry and to open space for further reflection and problematization of the Holocaust discourse in the light of the warning that its current commodification and industrialization sends us.

AB - People have always related art to the creation and transmission of myths. While myth as a theme in art has been thoroughly addressed, research about the “mythic” nature of the artist figure is far less common. The 20th and 21st centuries brought challenges to the status of art and artists in society, historically situated archetypes and stereotypes that we associate with the figure of the “artist” still survive to this day (e.g. “genius”, “subversive artists”, “child prodigy”, “eccentric”, etc.). In this paper, we set out to analyze various tropes used persistently to describe artists and explore how relevant the resulting myths are in (self) perceptions of Serbian contemporary artists. Our multidisciplinary approach to this topic combines a historicaltheoretical and empirical perspective. Through historical research of the relevant literature, we described and mapped the key tropes of the (mythical) artist figure as it developed in Western culture. In the theoretical analysis we address the inseparability of digital culture with everyday life of people today, which we call postdigital. We explore how the transition into contemporaneity affects the determination of the “artistfigure”, i.e., how it impacts the contemporary process of mythmaking. Following our historicaltheoretical analysis, we conducted five indepth interviews with contemporary Serbian artists to understand better how relevant the artist myth tropes are for their selfperception.

AB - The paper discusses the approaches of different media to Holocaust (re)presentation, with special reference to art music in the 20th century. Following the
classification proposed by Michael Rothberg on two possible perspectives for
representing the Holocaust: realistic and anti-realist (2000), we analyse two
compositions: Arnold Schoenberg’s A Survivor From Warsaw (1947) and Steve
Reich’s Different Trains (1988). The aim of the paper is to point out how artistic
music reflects and participates in the dominant historical and contemporary discourses of Holocaust representation, especially the discourses of “heroism” and
“non-representability”.

AB - Although all media forms meet unique problems in (re)presenting the Holocaust, Jacques Ransier's view that film history is the history of the power to
create history rightly indicates that film art faces special ethical and artistic
challenges in representing the Shoah. This study will present the history of
Holocaust narrative on the axis of four key concepts of post-Holocaust discourse: history, memory, representation, and communication. The history
segment focuses on what the Holocaust really is; in the segment concerning
memory we will discuss the issue “who does it belong, who should or should
not talk about it”; in the part about representation, our discussion will consider the main challenges of the question “How to speak about the Holocaust?” and why we are still talking about the Holocaust, almost 80 years
after the event. Finally, through the segment referring to communications,
we will point out the approach for the analysis of narratives and discourses
about the Holocaust, the goal of which is a better understanding of the narratives themselves and the motives for their creation. The interpretation of
these discourses will be conducted through cultural analysis and presentation of examples from key film achievements on the topic of the Holocaust:
Night and Fog, Alan Resnai, Claude Lanzmann’s Shoah, CBS and NBS TV
series Holocaust and adaptations of The Diary of Anne Frank.

Tumačenje ovih diskursa sprovedeno je kroz kulturalnu analizu i predstavljanje filmskih ostvarenja Noć i magla, Alana Renea (Alain Resnais), filma Šoa Kloda Lancmana (Claude Lanzmann), CBS-ove i NBS-jeve TV miniserije Holokaust i adaptacija Dnevnika Ane Frank., Although all media forms meet unique problems in (re)presenting the Holocaust, Jacques Ransier's view that film history is the history of the power to
create history rightly indicates that film art faces special ethical and artistic
challenges in representing the Shoah.
Night and Fog, Alan Resnai, Claude Lanzmann’s Shoah, CBS and NBS TV
series Holocaust and adaptations of The Diary of Anne Frank.",

i akademskim krugovima (Francuska, Velika Britanija, SAD, Istočna Evropa)
kritikom autonomnih kanonskih modela i institucija naučnog i filozofskog rada u
društvu, kulturi i umetnosti“ (Šuvaković 2008). U ovom radu promatraću pitanje „Šta
je teorija?“ čitajući dela Žaka Deride, Pola de Mana i Ričarda Rortija i polazeći od
gore pomenutog okvira „teorije“ definisane pre svega kao pravca mišljenja danas
praktikovanog dominantno u akademskoj sferi u SAD.
kroz pojam pisanja.
AB - Miško Šuvaković states that „Theory or theorization are hybrid genres or polygenres that developed in parallel in artistic, activist and academic circles (France, Great
Britain, USA, Eastern Europe) by criticizing autonomous canonical models and institutions of scientific and philosophical work in society, culture and art“ (Šuvaković
2008). In this paper, I will look at the question „What is theory?“ by reading the works
of Jacques Derrida, Paul de Man and Richard Rorty and starting from the above-mentioned framework of „theory“ defined primarily as a school of thought practiced today
dominantly in the academic sphere in the USA. For Derrida, the question „what is?“
is at the basis of all other questions, especially those that govern (governmentality)
our understanding of the world, such as questions of truth, consciousness, and subjectivity. These questions have been considered in philosophy in different ways, but the
one that is most significant for my topic is the relationship of presence/absence, internal/external, physis/mimesis viewed through the concept of writing.

Communicating the Holocaust

AB - This paper deals with role of digital culture and ICT in rethinking Holocaust remembrance, arguing for a semantic, or rather a theoretical change in analyzing Holocaust memory practices - from re-presenting the Holocaust to communicating the Holocaust. We will explore how this framework can provide a new tool for better encompassing and understanding of wide range of memory and representation practices we equate the Holocaust with, from traumatic Holocaust survivor testimonies, historical, cultural and national memory politics, education practices, Jewish Churban, to numerous memorial and artistic production about the Holocaust, but also add to the debates around issues of (non) representability of the Shoah, ethical imperatives of Holocaust memory and post-Holocaust thought. Our goal is to analyze how much this new platform is dependent on the digital turn, that is, how much of this change in perception of Holocaust memory can we find in the cultural paradigm change that came with ICT and digital technology. This digital turn in Holocaust memory is perceived in the increase of the amount of information about the Holocaust, social networks and social media culture dominated landscape, significance of digital archives, networking and collaborative projects, image, video and text reproduction and appropriation, focus on interactivity and communication in education and memorial institutions. We will showcase how big historical and institutional narratives about the Holocaust gave way to the exchange of multitude of stories, opinions and perspectives. How museum, memorial and school settings became entwined with online platforms and their digital materials, and also in what way are those digital materials used, reproduced and changed. Further, we will discuss how the third and fourth post-Holocaust generation are connected to this digital turn in Holocaust memory and whether in their memory and representational practices we can also find the communication turn.

The relation between emancipation and education is fraught with tensions. Even though we are the inheritors of the emancipatory potential of the Enlightenment, never before have these potentials been under such rigorous critical scrutiny as from various intellectual traditions of the second half of 20th century, such as postcolonial studies, poststructuralist thought, feminist critique, etc. But precisely because the classic emancipatory ideal became outdated, there is a great need for rethinking and rearticulating the idea of emancipation. We want to question whether, and to what extent, in rethinking emancipation, the role and the aim of education must be rethought as well.

AB - The article uses case studies of artistic and cultural practices on Internet in Serbia (1996–2014) to provide a deeper analysis of possible uses of internet technology and internet art for social and political change as well as showcasing changing attitudes toward the internet in a transitional semi-periphery state. Through analyzing these questions, the article defines several phases of development of internet and art projects in Serbia including (a) the phase of techno-utopia when internet technology was used for staging and supporting student protests and the so-called first ‘internet revolution’ in Serbia (1996–1999); (b) the phase of ambivalence or ‘mixed feelings’ toward the Internet, triggered of by Kosovo War and North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO)-led bombing of 1999–2000; (c) the phase of optimism and hope about the Internet after the ‘October 5th’ revolution (2000–cc. 2005); and (d) the phase of disillusionment with both the Internet and democracy (2010–2014). This study re-evaluates early achievements and democratic principles of networked society and illuminates core issues and accomplishments of cyber culture from the 1990s until present times through the point of view of multiple actors present within Serbian art and culture.

AB - Istraživanje "virtuelnog sećanja" ili sećanja u informacionom i digitalnom dobu postaje posebno značajna praksa u svetlu rastuće primene tehnologije u predstavljanju Šoe i transformaciji obrazovnih metodologija. Ključna pitanja postaju održiva budućnost i očuvanje digitalno pohranjenog sećanja (dokumenta, svedočenja, fotografija, filmova, knjiga itd.), kao i medijska arheologija reprezentacije Holokausta u informacionom dobu.

Predstavljene studije slučaja i teorijski pristupi kulturnom sećanju pokazuju raznovrsnost, bogatstvo i značaj studija sećanja i jevrejskih studija u Srbiji. Niz narativa ukazuje na rekonstrukcije prošlosti – kulture, Holokausta, dnevnog života i istorije – postavljenih u interdsiciplinarni teorijski i analitički kontekst post-sećanja, reprezentacije, afekata, odgovornosti, svedočenja, kulture, umetnosti, obrazovanja, medija i etike.

AB - In this paper, we are analyzing in what ways transition of music competition as an important institution in the world of Art music to digital world of the Internet is changing how we understand some important aspects of music performance and music excellence. The paper deals with a case study of the Internet Music Competition, an online music competition founded in 2011 by Udruženje pedagoga osnovnih i srednjih muzičkih škola Srbije (Teacher Association of Primary and Secondary Music Schools in Serbia). This new form of music competition mirrors many aspects specific for the Internet as a communication medium, and as such represents an interesting case of transitions that Art music goes through in the Information age, as well as possibilities and opportunities that the Internet as a medium brings forth. It opens important question of value and characteristics of digital sound in music performance. Is it possible to get a clear impression of artistic and music excellence through a digitally recorded sound? What is being evaluated in an online performance, and what is lost with digital sound? This kind of interdisciplinary study is significant both for understanding heterogeneous transitions of Art music discourses which are happening on a global scale, together with beginning to question and analyze the specifics of Serbian society and culture as part of the new digital, information age.

AB - One of the main problems of Holocaust research and representation is closely linked with the idea of original source. The original source is usually considered to be a visual or textual testimony and/or document of the actual historical event. However, we are always-already dealing with the multitude of complex (re)presentations mediated through the post-situation of a heavily layered knowledge and also with the segmented character of broken, suppressed debris of memories and traumas. Holocaust seems to inscript itself in the very core not only of the memory of that happening, but also in the memory of the whole period before, which was the primary aim of the project " The Portraits and Memories of the Jewish Community of Serbia Before the Holocaust ". Further approach to the problem reveals two parallel stories (one of the before-Holocaust past and one of the Holocaust past) that eventually become one – the one that becomes the actual source of knowledge of the Holocaust in the present, the source with which we are dealing with when we try to represent, interpret and speak about it. The implication of multimedia environment of the Internet and its mediation of such conflicted discourse is an interface through which we receive this complexity of knowledge. This paper deals with these many problems of the inscriptions and re-inscriptions of the knowledge of the Holocaust, as well as with the issue of opening the questions of the further construction and mediation of a Holocaust-related discourse.
