AB - This research is aimed to critically analyse the Yugoslav-Soviet disputes, with a specific focus on the ideological question of Party reform as a central issue in their
differing interpretations. The methodology employed involves a comparative examination of the principles of Yugoslav “democratic socialism” and Soviet “real socialism” during the period of intense labour movement debates and the peak of Yugoslavia’s internal crisis, which led to the replacement of two reformist leaderships
in 1971/1972. The study highlights the importance of the clashes between the Yugoslav aspiration for autonomous development and the Soviet hegemonic model,
with the international context playing a crucial role in intensifying the debates. The
findings underscore the significance of ideology in shaping political events and the
trajectory of social development in both countries. Ultimately, this research provides a deeper understanding of the final outcomes of the Yugoslav-Soviet disputes
and sheds light on the evolution of the Yugoslav socialist system’s attempt to present itself as a distinct “progressive” (non-Soviet) development model. The analysis
demonstrates how the dynamics of ideological differences influenced the course of
socialist development, reflecting the complexities of post-Stalinist transitions and
the implications of these disputes for broader debates about socialist modernization on the left.

AB - Veljko Mićunović was a prominent Yugoslav diplomat of the post-war era. In April 1961, Mićunović had a verbal altercation with Josip Broz Tito, the Yugoslav president, while on board the ship “Galeb”. This encounter led Mićunović to document the incident's critical details, which he recorded in a note that expressed his indignation with Tito's actions during the journey. Mićunović's note not only provides valuable insights into this event but also sheds light on Tito's working methods and his interactions with his subordinates. Moreover, the document also highlights the deep-seated animosity that existed between Tito and some of his colleagues in the state-party leadership, which
would continue until the early 1970s. This conflict was particularly apparent in Tito's cooperation with the State Secretariat for Foreign Affairs, where Mićunović spent over two decades of his career.

AB - This paper will analyze France’s attempted foreign policy strategy in Yugoslavia and in Eastern Europe during the 1960s, beginning with the various positions of de Gaulle’s France and Tito’s Yugoslavia and the numerous similarities in how the two countries’ diplomacy functioned. In both countries, the course of foreign policy was determined according to the authoritarian characteristics of their systems and of their central figure–the president. Both countries were also interested in transcending the Cold War division of Europe, and they based their strategies on attempts to marginalize the United States and pacify the Soviet regime. De Gaulle’s attempt at a détente, which Yugoslavia was very sympathetic toward and had also committed itself to similar goals, failed due to unrealistic illusions of overcoming this bipolarity by forging a middle way between the two opposing Cold War blocs. Faced with an overestimation of their own influence, along with the Warsaw Pact’saggression toward Czechoslovakia, Moscow’s complete lack of interest in pacification, and the US’s unwillingness to withdraw, end of de Gaulle’s attempts at détente, in which Yugoslavia would play an important role, came to an end. Nevertheless, similar European and global policy goals brought France and Yugoslavia closer together, and this established the principles on which a cooling down period in the mid-1970s became possible.

AB - In the second half of the 19th century, Serbian populism became a focal point of the politicallife of the country and the dominant social model. Established by the Radical Party and relyingon the ideas of Russian populism, it was manifested in two forms: as social egalitarianism andideological nationalism. A monopolistic party, reliance on Russia, an authoritarian leader, essentialisation of the nation and a striving for the establishment of a great state were the basicforms through which it was manifested. In socialist Yugoslavia the predominant form of populism was the leftist one, emanated through resistance to market reforms and theliberalisation of society. At the time of the breakdown of European socialism, Serbia, at thetime of the so-called antibureaucratic revolution, turned towards radical populism personifiedby Slobodan MiloπeviÊ. That was a time of transformation of leftist and pro-Yugoslav populisminto a predominantly right-wing Serbian populism with an ultranationalist content. The patternestablished in this way has not significantly changed to the present day.

AB - This paper deals with a critical stage in the dissolution of the Soviet Communist (Bolshevik) Party’s domination in the Communist commonwealth. The gradual emancipation of European Communist parties, starting with Yugoslavia (1948), through the developments that caused the Soviet interventions in Hungary (1956) and Czechoslovakia (1968), gave birth to independent strategies of political struggle, autonomous from Moscow’s ideological centre, which were implemented by the largest Communist parties in Western Europe. The attempts aimed at the syncretism of the communist platform, and ideas of political rights and adapting to the parliamentary regime resulted in the “Third Road” movement, which strove to unify the positive experiences of the two ideologically opposed sides of the Cold War international constellation. Although it was a belated and, eventually – purely ideological concept, the movement itself and the idea of Eurocommunism has remained as an important testimony of an attempt at finding new paths in the struggle for a more just society.

AB - U radu se analiziraju politička stajališta reformskih političkih elita u Srbiji i Hrvatskoj o ključnim pitanjima unutarnjega razvoja Jugoslavije početkom 1970-ih. Međutim, nerešeni odnosi u federaciji, skupa s porastom nacionalizma i snažnim otporom partijskih konzervativaca, određivali su krajnje domete saradnje reformskih snaga i perspektive razvoja demokratskoga i tržišnoga socijalizma u Jugoslaviji.

AB - This paper analyses the phenomenon of SIP conception of Yugoslav foreign policy at the beginning of the 1960s.By examining some of the crucial reasons for polarization of Yugoslav communist party and certain dilemmas of Yugoslav foreign policy, this paper is trying to explain main reasons for the gap between the main party organs and the State Secretariat for Foreign Affairs (Sekreterijat inostranih poslova - SIP).
