AB - Trust is a precondition of functional relationships and cohesive societies. Various studies point out the significance of the interaction between cognitive and affective dimensions in attempts to understand interpersonal and political trust. Further, the literature suggests that there is a leap between interpersonal and political trust, since the former is more direct, but also that the two are interlinked. However, the developmental dynamic between the emotional and the rational dimension in constructing interpersonal and political trust remains understudied. Additionally, most psychological research on determinants, correlates, and dimensions of trust is quantitative and neglects the substantive importance of social context in its development. The current research aims to bridge these gaps by providing in-depth insight into the processes of construction of interpersonal and political trust among different age groups and across three European countries. The sample, recruited via purposive and snowball sampling, consisted of a total of 119 participants (F=60) from four age groups (11-12; 14-15; 18-19; 30+) from Italy, the Czech Republic, and Serbia. A total of 24 focus groups (two per age group, eight per country) were conducted online, providing qualitative data on how participants construct their trust in interpersonal relationships and in the government. The results of the thematic analyses conducted separately for all countries expose two independent dimensions of trust building: emotional and rational. Furthermore, it shows that interpersonal trust is built primarily on the emotional basis (closeness, care, reciprocity, familiarity, sharing), while political trust is mostly built on the rational one (the assessment of knowledge, competence, and expertise of the authorities). However, the two are interlinked and can have a spillover effect so that when, e.g., a public official represents a familiar figure, the sense of familiarity, despite its centrality for interpersonal trust, can incite political trust. The findings will be discussed considering the differences between age groups and social contexts of the three countries.

AB - In sociological research, photography is most commonly used to supplement presented
data and less frequently as a data collection technique. This paper focuses on using
photography to examine the gender aspect of poverty in rural areas of Serbia. Through
the application of photo-elicitation, data were collected in field research during 2015 in
Serbia. The data include photographs taken by girls and women beneficiaries of social
services. Additionally, they incorporate the notes on the motives and interpretation
of the photographs taken, along with transcripts of interviews conducted with the
photographers a month after the photography sessions. The research has shown that
photography, as a medium, connects the emotional experiences of poverty among
research participants with the factual conditions of their lives in material deprivation
and isolation. Consequently, it offers the possibility of articulating diverse meanings of
poverty. The diversity of meanings of poverty is evident in the specific social categories
to which the interviewees in this study belong, such as persons with disabilities, for
example. Based on the findings of this research, the use of photo-elicitation emerges
as particularly significant in sociological studies that involve the exploration of subjective
meanings and experiences of specific population groups, such as girls and women living
in poverty in rural areas of Serbia.

Online violence among students at the University of Belgrade: results of the UniSafe survey

AB - Online violence research has exploded in recent years, but has largely focused on
cyberbullying behaviours in primary and middle schools. Empirical research on online
violence among students in higher education is much rarer not only in Serbia, but also
worldwide. Given the negative consequences of online violence on young people's
psychophysical health and well-being, it is important to know how many university
students have experienced online violence with persons associated with their
institution.
The aim of this paper was to determine the prevalence and frequency of online violence
among students in an academic context, taking into account gender and sexual
orientation. Online violence can take many forms such as cyberbullying, online sexual
abuse, non-consensual distribution of sexual images and texts.
The survey is part of the international UniSafe project – the largest of its kind in Europe
in the research sector, which investigates the prevalence of gender-based violence at
universities and scientific research institutions in Europe. Quantitative data was
collected through an online survey conducted in March and April 2022. The sample
consisted of 2175 students from the University of Belgrade (76% female and 24% male;
87% heterosexual and 13% LGBT+).
Тhe results indicate that the overall prevalence of online violence among students is 5%,
among members of the LGBT+ population – 9%, heterosexuals – 4%, female students –
6%, male students – 4%. When it comes to specific forms of victimization, unlawful
photographing or recording was reported by 2% of female and 3% of male and 2% LGBT+,
2% heterosexual; bullying, threats and attacks online was reported by 3% of female and 2% of male; 6% LGBT+, 2% heterosexual; offensive or threatening comments on learning
or collaborative work platforms was reported by 2% of female and 1% of male; 4% LGBT+,
2% heterosexual.
About half of the respondents (42%) had been a victim of online violence once, almost a
third (30% students) 2-3 times and almost a fifth (15% of students) 6 times or more. No
statistically significant differences in exposure to online violence were found in relation
to gender and sexual orientation.
Since starting their studies, 11% of students have noticed someone has been harassed
online (e.g. via social media, email, messages or virtual learning platforms). More than
two thirds (69%) reported that the victim was one or more girls, and about one fifth
(23%) that it was one or more young men or a group of girls or young men.
Compared with some previous research on online violence in Serbia, cyberbullying is less
prevalent among university students than among high school students. The results of
this study provides information on online violence at the university level, which has the
potential to inform the development of more appropriate policies that include
preventive and intervention measures.

AB - This article focuses on the cases of Croatia and Serbia to demonstrate how the heteronormative model of family and the constructs of “protection of family and children”—which are central to anti-gender mobilizations—can be traced to the 1990s heteronationalist discourses of family in both countries. The authors argue that the crucial link between these two discourses is that they both increasingly problematize diverse family forms and imbue “traditional family” with special value as the structure that is “best for children” and therefore merits special legal and policy protection with a view to its restoration as society’s unquestionable cornerstone. The analysis of narrative content in parliamentary and public debates about family-related laws and policies in Serbia and Croatia between the 1990s and the 2020s is guided by the following questions: What are the continuities in the legal framework and narratives on the family in post-socialist Croatia and Serbia compared with the period of socialist Yugoslavia? Who are the actors who create narratives of return to a traditional family in post-socialist Croatia and Serbia, and how do these actors define family and care for the family? The article calls attention to how what is “old”—narratives of return to the traditional family—forms the backbone of religious-conservative oppositions to gender and sexuality rights, including the most recent wave of anti-gender mobilizations.

AB - Objective: Times of societal crisis, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, during which people need to make sense of a chaotic world and to protect their health and lives, according to psychological research, represent suitable ground for the development of conspiracy theories about origins, spread, and treatment of the threat (coronavirus). Although numerous studies have been conducted on this issue since the beginning of the pandemic until today, most of the studies were conducted on the adult population with limited insights into development of the conspiracy beliefs in adolescence or over the lifespan. Objective of this study is precisely to explore how conspiracy beliefs regarding COVID-19 pandemic differentiate between multiple age groups (cross-sectional design), what are their sources and contexts, and how do they relate with the tendency to trust the government.
Methodology: Data were gathered through eight focus group discussions with four age groups (11-12, 14-15, 18-19, 30+) in Serbia.
Results: Based on critical discourse analysis, this paper identifies the differences in content and the
sources of conspiracy thinking and how it relates to trust in the government. Study shows that high
distrust in Serbian government is associated with conspiracy beliefs both within youth and adults.
However, while among adolescents this finding is exclusively related with their beliefs that ruling
structures have financial gain from the pandemic, against the interests of citizens, among adults it is related to the belief that the government (un)intentionally submits to the new global order that is
managed by one or more powerful actors who are coordinated in secret action to achieve an outcome that is of public interest, but not public knowledge.
Conclusion: The results will be discussed within current socio-political climate in Serbia, as well as the basis for understanding psychological factors which may underlie these tendencies in conspiracy theorizing, such as social identification, collective narcissism, authoritarianism, and social dominance orientation.

AB - Extreme situations such as the COVID-19 pandemic transparently show all the shortcomings of the Serbian system that should, in theory, provide support and protection to citizens in such circumstances. A particularly demanding task was to determine and measure the well-being of individuals during the pandemic, especially those from marginalized groups whose needs are not the priority to the system even under regular circumstances, those on the bottom of the social hierarchy who cannot influence the policies that shape their daily lives, or the decisions of authorities that further reproduce social inequalities. The paper examines institutional ethics of care during the pandemic in Serbia through the analysis of the adequacy of lockdown measures and their effects on the girls and women trafficking survivors. Analysis of the data collected in semi-structured interviews with girls and women showed that three central elements of the institutional (ethics of) care: the purpose of care, recognition of power relations, and the need for pluralistic tailoring of care to meet individuals’ needs, were not fulfilled during the pandemic and that the logic of institutional care has had a politicizing character in Serbia.
logika institucionalne brige u Srbiji zapravo imala politizujući karakter.

AB - This paper focuses on the process of gender socialization of boys, examined through parenting practices of mothers and fathers in the contemporary socio-cultural context of Serbia. The analysis is based on empirical material collected via semi-structured interviews during 2012 on a sample of 24 families with children aged 2 to 12. The constant comparative analysis (grounded theory method) includes attitudes and actions of parents of boys and girls (as a control group) in the process of family gender socialization, and enables interpretation of boys’ gender socialization models on a continuum ranging from traditional to modern upbringing practices of parents. The research shows that parental practices in modern-day Serbia are still primarily traditional. Of the three distinct models of boys’ gender socialization (traditional, transitional and participatory), the last two represent a step forward in the direction of the individualization of parenthood and more egalitarian gender socialization patterns influenced primarily by partner relationship dynamics. These dynamics are initiated by mothers’ reflexiveness and the transformation of the concept of the “sacrificing motherhood”. The dynamic of partner relationships thus shifts in the direction of “sacrificing fatherhood”, that is, a father’s renunciation of a part of the privileges he enjoyed before entering the responsibilities within the household. Interactions with the social environment (and perceived changes in it), as well as interactions with the family of origin are crucial elements in whose interrelation the upbringing practices of parents are built and within which gender socialization of boys takes place in the socio-cultural context of contemporary families in Serbia.

AB - According to the results of various studies, women remain responsible for most household duties. This distribution is also reflected in the position of women in academia, since the family-dominant model tends to be reproduced within the academic community as well. This imbalance is reflected in the distribution of “lower rank” jobs in academia, and the shifting of most responsibilities for such jobs to women, leaving men with more time to pursue academic work. This situation, originating in the issue of family responsibilities, actually raises academic questions. The analysis in the paper is based on empirical insights from a 2017 survey conducted among academic staff at the University of Belgrade, and focuses on the following question: what factors lead to engagements within the family which seek to change patriarchal patterns as expressed in the unequal distribution of domestic and family care work, and which indirectly affect the distribution of responsibilities between men and women in the academic sphere?

Beyond the territory principle: Non-territorial approach to the Kosovo question(s)

AB - This article presents an attempt to approach the dispute over Kosovo
between Serbs and Albanians from a non-territorial perspective, with
particular focus on the preservation of the Serbian cultural and religious
heritage. First, we argue that the Kosovo issue is at present commonly
understood as an either-or territorial dispute over sovereignty and
recognition between Serbian and Kosovo Albanian politicians. However,
we claim that a lasting resolution to the Kosovo issue actually needs to
account for at least three separate aspects: 1) status of Northern Kosovo
which is ethnically Serbian and still maintains various ties with the Serbian
state, 2) status of Serbian cultural and religious heritage, chiefly UNESCO
world heritage Serbian medieval monasteries and churches and 3) the
fact that the Serbian population in central Kosovo, i.e. south of the river
Ibar, where most of the mentioned monasteries and churches are located,
are located in small municipalities or enclaves of Serbs surrounded by
vast Albanian populations. We examine the applicability of the non–
territorial approach (NTA) to the Kosovo issue by analyzing the normative
framework directly regulating the Serbian cultural and religious heritage
in Kosovo, its preservation and protection, particularly of Serbian Orthodox
monasteries, churches and other historical and cultural sites, while
comparing these regulations to the existing normative NTAs in Croatia
and Montenegro. Arguably, since most Serbian monasteries and churches
are not included in any sovereignty negotiations, we point to the potential
to combine territorial and non–territorial approaches, regardless of the
continued obstacles in implementation arising from continued contestation
of Kosovo’s sovereign status.
Primenljivost NTA koncepta
Hrvatske i Crne Gore.

in the distribution of “lower rank” jobs in academia, and the shift ing of most
responsibilities for such jobs to women, leaving men with more time to pursue academic work. Th is situation, originating in the issue of family responsibilities, actually raises academic questions. Th e analysis in the paper is based
on empirical insights from a 2017 survey conducted among academic staff at
the University of Belgrade, and focuses on the following question: what factors lead to engagements within the family which seek to change patriarchal
patterns as expressed in the unequal distribution of domestic and family care
work, and which indirectly aff ect the distribution of responsibilities between
men and women in the academic sphere?

This research also aimed to identify the most common problems and needs of young girls, as well as the local community, i.e. relevant institutions and organizations for youth. The research was conducted in secondary schools in five local communities in Serbia: Kikinda, Obrenovac, Novi Pazar, Jagodina and Vranje.

Razumevanje koncepta rodne ravnopravnosti u normativnom okviru visokog obrazovanja u Srbiji

AB - Since 2000, a number of legal and political measures and mechanisms
have been implemented to advance gender equality in research and higher education
institutions in Serbia, mainly as a part of the process of harmonisation of legislation
with the EU standards on gender equality. However, while on one side the relatively
high score on the Gender Equality Index is often evoked in political discourse to support
the claim that Serbia is doing well regarding gender equality in higher education, most
of the empirical research done in Serbia reveales persistent gender inequalities, gendered
career possibilities, and unequal working conditions in academia for women and men.
Originating from those contradictary assertations, our main research interest in this
chapter is concerned with the way in which the concept of gender equality is understood
in the normative frame of Serbia. Our hypothesis is that gender inequalities in the
academic sphere are acctually supported by the way in which the concept of gender
equality is framed in the Serbian normative order.
Our study will be based on the analyses of documents that form the normative
framework of gender equality in higher education in Serbia. In addition, we will analyse
the data gathered in interviews with the academics of the University of Belgrade. Hence,
an inappropriate normative framework will be detected, explored, and additionally
explained through its visible practical implications
