AB - Emancipation implies that there exists some kind of docu mented or experienced lack of freedom/equality or some state of slavery or oppression, and represents the act or process of liberation, throwing off the yoke and empowering the subjugated, although the yokes can be very different. It is a voluntary act or process that is often seen as a return to a state of natural freedom from a state of unfreedom. It is an act or process that frees one from the power of another, whether it is slavery, subjugation, dependence or control. The concept gradually evolved to encompass freedom from all forms of oppression. What were once seen as partial “emancipations” have been elevated to a universal call for the “social emancipation” of humanity, championed by reformers and revolutionaries worldwide.

AB - In this article, our focus is on the topic of engagement and possibility of empathy with future generations. We acknowledge that empathy for future generations is practically unattainable in its strictest sense due to the lack of access to their potential mental states and the absence of direct interaction. Additionally, we will draw upon the arguments presented by Goldie and Slaby to address concerns regarding the potential paternalization that may arise in empathic relations towards future generations. However, despite these limitations, it is important to emphasize that we are still engaged with future generations. Instead of adopting a paternalizing approach where we impose expectations on how they should feel, our engagement exposes us to the anticipated but unknown judgments of future generations. Throughout this article, we will argue that engagement with future generations brings out our own social self-consciousness and provides a basis of our connectedness and responsibility towards future generations.

Trust and ‘Being Moved’ as Forms of Engagement in Situations of Uncertainty

AB - The main aim of this paper is to put emphasis on the role of trust and the emotion of being moved in a situation of crisis. I do not intend to address the general role, or all roles, these emotions might have in a crisis situation. My focus is rather on the role of these emotions in we-formation, presupposing that mutual engagement between the actors is the crucial constituent through which first-person singular shifts to first-person plural. I rely on Bennet Helm’s argument on how trust can function as an invitation to delineate communal norms in the new circumstances of uncertainty. Accordingly, by being trusted by other(s), the addressee is entitled to the expected responsibility for a situation: (1) the addressee is entitled as a member of a group (of us who are responsible in the situation); (2) the addressee is exposed to pressure to respond to a situation with responsibility. In the second part, I adopt Cova’s and Deonna’s argument about the function of the emotion of being moved. I suggest that in such a situation “being moved” expresses the readiness to reorganize one’s hierarchy of values in the light of new circumstances of mutual dependency. Taken together, trust and being moved portray the outline of mutual engagement between the actors in a crisis situation which aims to establish new communal norms and values.

AB - In this paper we consider the correlation and interdependence between empathy and engaged acts,
i.e., acts undertaken in interacting with the other or others, through which the first-person singular
shifts to the first-person plural. We argue that engaged acts are a constitutive element of empathy. To
support our thesis, we address some issues with the common notion of empathy, specifically, those
related to the first-person and third-person accounts. Further, we discuss their alternatives in
phenomenology and interaction theories. In particular, we address two important aspects of empathy:
that of the second person perspective, and the issue of the Self/Other differentiation. In the final part of
the paper, we portray the phenomenological structure of engaged acts.

AB - Our main goal is to describe the structure of engaged acts and compassion and their constitutive
interrelation to explicate the key role of engaged and compassionate acts for group constitution.
In the first part of the paper, we formulate our guiding idea: the key to understanding compassion lies in understanding engagement and vice versa. We then consider the problematic nature
of engaged acts: On the one hand, they do not meet the conditions to be attributed to the plural
subject; on the other hand, they cannot be understood without presupposing the plural subject.
To understand this, we rely primarily on Helm’s theory of emotions and the classical phenomenological analyses of the constitution of the plural subject, but we also point out the limitations
of the latter. In the last two sections, we build on Nussbaum’s theory of compassion to describe
the parallelism in the structure of compassion and engagement and to show their constitutive
connection. Finally, we examine the specific way in which (compassionate) engaged acts “place
burden” and transform a group into an institution

The Emotional Base of Educational Process: Beyond Care for Wellbeing

Cvejić, Igor

PY - 2021

AB - This paper starts from the presupposition that the necessity of the education of “immatures” does not rest primarily on biological or empirical reasons, but on normative ones. As argued by Tamar Schapiro (Shapiro 1999), on a recognition of moral autonomy and responsibility. This immediately opens the problem which Schapiro (ibid) calls a “problem of childhood”. On the one hand, autonomy is not something that (passively) happens. On the other hand, autonomy does not arise only from a set of choices and actions of immatures. Thus, the main aim of education could be overcoming the addressed problem.
In the second part of the article, I will address Schapiro’s solution, as well as criticisms of that solution. However, the central goal of this paper will be to designate essential emotional relations between the educator and the learner. First, we must consider that an educator must be capable of showing care for a learner perceived as an autonomous agent, beyond (usually patronizing) care for wellbeing, even if this care is no more than therapeutic trust. To be more precise, an educator needs to have emotional capacities to care for that which the learner cares for, i.e. that which Bennet W. Helm calls care about an agent as such. In other words, emotional processes must include a recognition of learners’ emotions. This is still not enough, because this one-sided (weak) asymmetric relation cannot explain how the educator’s authority could influence learner’s autonomy. In order for this to happen, educational process must involve a mutual engagement between the educator and the learner, so learners can adopt the influence of the educator’s evaluations on the basis of their own autonomous evaluative perspective, without undermining their own autonomy. This is the relation we paradigmatically find in friendship. Thus, educational processes seem to have to involve (quasi-)friendship without equality. I will argue for an alternative view – to understand educational processes as joint engagements, involving mutual care between its actors, who treat each other as “one of us”.

AB - My focus in this text is not the general notion of vulnerability (although it is important), but how one feels vulnerable. (1) In the first part, I will sketch the structure of such an emotional experience. (2) Then, I will try to explain why the recognition of another’s vulnerability is important in regard to emotional agency, emphasizing the difference between this kind of recognition and similar experience of empathy and social recognition. (3) In the third section, I will concentrate on the question of intersubjectivity of (mutual) recognition. However, I think that there is an inherent normative gap between the ideal of universal intersubjective mutual recognition with respect to emotional agency and the fact that in the social realm this recognition rests on culturally and socially dependent criteria of adequacy for such emotional experience. Moreover, the mentioned gap could put some persons in a situation (emotional exclusion) in which they don’t have a ‘right’ to feel vulnerable in their own way. (4) In the conclusion, I try to offer some practical possibilities to bridge this gap through emotion-oriented environmental structures.

Intentionality Sui Generis of Pleasure in Mere Reflection

AB - In the following chapter, I will attempt to argue that feelings, and, above all, pleasure in mere reflection, ought to be understood as intentional states, and moreover, as feeling-intentionality sui generis. In the first portion of the text, I present the fundamentals of the Kantian understanding of feelings, and attempt to demonstrate why we should reject some of the conclusions of interpretations offered by Paul Guyer and Rachel Zuckert. In part two, I outline some of the particulars of pleasure in mere reflection. In part three, I detail problems relating to the question of the object of pleasure in the context of mere reflection. Finally, in part four, I propose an approach in which intentionality of pleasure in mere reflection can be understood as feeling-intentionality sui generis, explain why this understanding should be ascribed to Kant, and discuss how this might resolve some of the problems surveyed in part three.

Some Remarks on Unfocused Hatred: Identity of the Hated One and Criteria of Adequacy

AB - Thomas Szanto has recently argued that hatred could not be a fitting emotion because of its blurred focus. It thus cannot trace the properties of its intentional object. Although I agree with the core of Szanto’s account, I would like to discuss two connected issues that might be of importance. First, I want to address whether the unfittingness of hatred has anything to do with the possibility that the hated person does not identify with what they are hated for. I conclude that if the focus of hatred is blurred, hatred does not trace the identification of the hated person or group. Next, I propose a possibility that (certain) criteria of adequacy of hatred (why someone is treated by members of society as hateworthy) are embedded in the cultural and social framework in such a way that they are not necessarily intelligibly justified by their relation to the focus and import it has. Under such circumstances, with hatred still being unfitting, these criteria create quasi-correctness of hatred (actually, they trace properties of someone being hateworthy). If this is correct, it will enable us to keep the thesis that hatred cannot be fitting. At the same time, we could use political vocabulary to tackle hatred that is common in cases when a group will not give up their commitment to hatred and argue that some people or group of people is not to be hated under the hating group’s own criteria.
on ima.

Konstituisanje zajedničke perspektive: angažovani akti i logika poziva

AB - The aim of this paper is to offer a detailed analysis of the concepts of individual and shared perspective, the call, and engagement, and thus contribute to the theoretical elumination of these phenomena and debates on collective intentionality. First, we introduce the phenomenological concept of perspective that we will use through the rest of the paper, refining it by making comparisons with the relevant literature. Sec-ond, we focus on Helm’s notion of joint evaluative perspective as the key to under-standing collective intentionality. A more thorough understanding of the process of constitution of the joint perspective through interactions between agents and the communication of their individual perspectives, leading to the harmonization of the joint perspective, will be pointed out as an important further task. The third part of the paper will be devoted to engaged acts (in the narrow sense of the term): acts per-formed as calls upon others to form a joint perspective. We will explain the inner logic of the call, and in this way show that even when there are no generally valid norms or a generally valid content of the joint perspective (e.g. when the call is directed at those who are not yet a part of the joint perspective), the joint perspective can be consti-tuted via a distribution of responsibility and trust. Finally, we will use the current ex-ample of the corona crisis in order to show how this theoretical apparatus can con-tribute to a better understanding of novel forms of global joint action, as exemplified by the new social movements.
