AB - The chapter aims to show how gender equality can be used for populist purposes, becoming performative in the constitution of façade democracy. It looks at specifics of the relationship between the Serbian Orthodox Church and the state-led gender equality policymaking in Serbia. Namely, in contrast to the anti-gender mobilization worldwide, most often heartily supported by the relevant religious actors, Serbia witnessed an unexpected silence on the side of the SOC representatives on issues of gender equality. The chapter provides a look back at the years prior to 2017, demonstrating the power and presence of SOC in shaping Serbian conservative politics, to then focus on the recent political developments, revolving around the appointment of the first lesbian Prime Minister. The chapter ultimately shows how the catch-all populism of the current regime succeeds in capturing gender equality from the feminist movement, making the Serbian Orthodox Church, at the same time, the most unlikely ally in the state gender equality for show.

Who Cares for Families? Narrative(s) of Return in Postsocialist Europe

AB - The introduction to the special section “Who Cares for Families? Narrative(s) of Return in Postsocialist Europe” identifies and analyzes its core concept—the narrative of return. Families of today are talked about differently, and how they are narrativized matters. The narrative that stresses that family is under threat and in need of defense or a special form of care, figuring care as restitution of natural, traditional, or family proper, is termed the narrative of return. The trope of return is strongly normative and non-descriptive, as it relies on mythical temporalities that ought to be restored in our present. The article first defines the choice of concepts—narrative, return, care, and threat. Second, it applies this conceptual frame in the transnational context, particularly within the transnational anti-gender campaigns in the populist moment. Third, it focuses on the postsocialist part of Europe, where, as the entire special section aims to demonstrate, the narrative of return gained particular currency. In Eastern Europe, these narratives are integral to larger projects of restoration of national agenda and serve as a tool of double emancipation: from the Soviet past and from the European Union present. Political actors using narrative(s) of return advocate and successfully push through fundamental changes in the political frameworks and value systems of the postsocialist countries. In sum, the article aims to demonstrate the conceptual background of a political tool.

Equal Bodies: The Notion of the Precarious in Judith Butler's Work

PY - 2023

AB - The aim of the article is to offer a reading of Judith Butler’s understanding of the
precarious, the notion which gives rise to her particular understanding of precarity.
The first part of the article discusses the transition from the theory of performativity
to the theory of precarity and claims that the body provides the link between a
performative act and a precarious life. The second part scrutinizes the idea of the
precarious as it appears in conjunction with life. Precariousness and precarity are
related to dispossessability and dispossession, and to a politically induced inequality.
The article concludes with a claim that the notion of the precarious offers itself as a
possible point of departure for an entirely different conceptualization of equality, and
as a strong basis for coalitional action or collective struggle. The specific positioning
of the body and the political desire for radical equality in Butler’s thought makes
theories of performativity and precarity interrelated

Judith Butler and Politics

Zaharijevic, Adriana

(Edinburgh University Press, 2023)

TY - BOOK
AU - Zaharijevic, Adriana
PY - 2023
UR - http://rifdt.instifdt.bg.ac.rs/123456789/2959
AB - Presents Judith Butler's interest in plurality of bodily lives and her search for a social transformation conducive to a more livable world
Offers a novel understanding of Butler’ work as a call for an insurrection at the level of the real
Provides a framework based on an intersection of four main pillar-concepts, performativity, agency, livable life and non-violence
Reads Butler’s philosophy as centred on bodies
Reads Butler’s work as a convincing counter-argument against liberal versions of ontology
This book is the only monograph-length study of the work of Judith Butler to focus on the entire scope of her work, including the last decade of her writing. In light of these texts, it presents a fresh interpretation of Butler’s political thought, oriented by the idea of an insurrection at the level of the real.

Chapters on ontology, performativity, agency and precariousness, a liveable life and non-violence explain how Butler’s thought has always been focused on embodied performances. Instead of seeing Butler as simply a thinker of the subversive performance of cultural scripts, the book frames her work for the twenty-first century as an ambitious and coherent egalitarian alternative to liberal political philosophy.

Each chapter introduces a Butlerian concept, clarifying this in the context of critical debates, while explaining its contribution to a new social ontology whose key normative principle is a liveable life. The book explores the potential of this conceptual framework not just in relation to the politics of gender, but also to questions of social inequality, structural violence and the experience of precarity. Designed for both researchers and students, it provides a comprehensive way of accessing what is radically original about this crucial political theorist.

AB - Addressing the relationship among social critique, violence, and domination, Violence and Reflexivity: The Place of Critique in the Reality of Domination examines a critique of violent and unjust social arrangements that transcends the Enlightenment/postmodern opposition. This critique surpasses the “reflexive violence” of classical enlightenment universalism without committing the “violence of reflexivity” by negating any possibility of collective radical social engagement. The unifying thread of the collection, edited by Marjan Ivković, Adriana Zaharijević, and Gazela Pudar-Draško, is a sensitivity to the field of tension created by these extremes, especially for the issue of how to articulate a non-violent critique that is nevertheless “militant,” in the sense that it creates a rupture in an institutionalized order of violence. In Part One, the contributors examine the theoretical resources that help us move beyond the reflexive violence of the classical Enlightenment social critique in our quest for justice and non-domination. Part Two brings together nuanced attempts to reconsider the dominant modern understandings of violence, subjectivity, and society without succumbing to the violence of reflexivity that characterizes radically anti-Enlightenment standpoints.

AB - The article examines the patient-doctor relationship, relying on Michel
Foucault’s concept of the clinical gaze. We argue that during the last decades, a
profound transformation of the social nature of medicine took place, one that
Foucault’s understanding of the clinical gaze cannot adequately account for.
First, the article offers an elaboration of the three-node network of clinical gaze,
the clinic, and nosology to explain the positioning of the doctor and the patient
within the specific social ontology generated by the rise of medicine. We then
discuss intensive but irresolute developments brought by technological advancements,
especially the X-ray tube. Finally, we argue that in the contemporary clinic,
equipped with a plethora of sophisticated devices, the position of the doctor endured
the most radical transformation in comparison with Foucault’s proponent
of the clinical gaze at the dawn of modern medicine.

Violence and Reflexivity The Place of Critique in the Reality of Domination

On Butler’s Theory of Agency

AB - This essay addresses the notion of agency in Judith Butler’s work. Its central claim is that her political philosophy revolves around a specific understanding of agency, even a theory of agency, which has not as yet received due attention. The first part of the essay examines two main thought traditions in which agency became an operational notion, through the lenses of intentionality and constraints, voluntarism and determinism. The second part elaborates on the centrality of the body, the social, and the power in Butler’s understanding of agency, conjoining agency with performativity. The essay argues that agency in Butler exceeds freedom, autonomy, and liberation, and has a potent political meaning of its own.

abstract = "This essay addresses the notion of agency in Judith Butler’s work. The essay argues that agency in Butler exceeds freedom, autonomy, and liberation, and has a potent political meaning of its own.",

avagy Group for Social Engagement Studies néven. A csoport mindenekelőtt
végzi, s ahogyan ezzel a társadalmi változások motorjává válik. Az
intézet nyitottsága és több szakterületre való figyelme nagyban segítette
az elköteleződésre vonatkozó vizsgálódások elmélyítését. Filozófusok,
szociológusok, irodalomtudósok, történészek, antropológusok, politikatudománnyal
foglalkozók, szlavisták és mások vállalták, hogy feltárják
e problémakör különböző vetületeit, a fogalomtörténeti mozzanatait,
a társadalomtudományi kutatásokban való alkalmazhatóságát vagy
a rokon jelenségekkel (aktivizmus, ellenállás stb.) való összefüggéseit.

AB - During the last decade the notion of gender (in gender equality, gender
mainstreaming, theory & studies) increasingly began to figure as a threat to the
‘common man’, family, nation and the state – despite the fact that gender equality
has not been fully reached anywhere in the world. Gender functions as a ‘symbolic
glue’ or an obscure source for divergent, and at times contradictory grievances.
Although anti-gender discourses tend to present them as particular to a given nation, the trend is pointedly international. The paper demonstrates that anti-gender
discourses belong to an arsenal of right-wing populist political tools aimed at
dismantling democracy, equality and attained liberties. We focus on various cases,
Serbian among them. Our aim is to discern the discursive patterns that frame antigender attitudes, and to show that the context in which they appear replicates itself
in different national settings.

Independent and Invulnerable: Politics of an Individual

AB - When from the early 1980s onwards a reconfiguration of the politics of dependence began to take place, followed by a thorough dismantling of welfarism and real-socialism, individuals were called upon to use their freedom to self-actualize –to depend only on their own wits and capacities to deal with globalized insecurities. Government could no longer be interested in taking care of the governed. The governed needed to become more dependent on themselves, and less dependent on the state in particular. The governed, in other words, needed to be less vulnerable. It was repeated time and again that the welfare of individuals is best secured and promoted when they are prompted to be independent, to use all their might and imagination to be the only carers for themselves. To not be cared for by others implies a certain level of imagined invulnerability. Each and every one of us –simply by being individuals– has the capacity to demonstrate one’s sovereignty over oneself through one’s independence.
Such reprogrammed neo-Victorian language urges us to meticulously revisit its source. The link between early liberalism and neoliberalism, at least in their shared tendency to produce strong aversion to dependence and vulnerability, to correlate it with utter abjection, is by no means accidental. I will claim that the notion of independence is inextricable from an incessant circuit of exclusions, systemic blockades, restrictions or obstructions of opportunities, rights and resources. It is, however also closely related to a specific epistemic and normative configuration of the creature who is the bearer of independence, i.e. a sovereign individual who governs himself.

AB - The article examines the patient-doctor relationship, relying on Michel Foucault’s concept of the clinical gaze. We argue that during the last decades, a profound transformation
of the social nature of medicine took place, one that Foucault’s understanding of the clinical gaze cannot adequately account for. First, the article offers an elaboration of the three-node network of clinical gaze, the clinic, and nosology to explain the positioning of the doctor and the patient within the specific social ontology generated by the rise of medicine. We then discuss intensive but irresolute developments brought by technological advancements, especially the X-ray tube. Finally, we argue that in the contemporary clinic, equipped with a plethora of
sophisticated devices, the position of the doctor endured the most radical transformation in comparison with Foucault’s proponent of the clinical gaze at the dawn of modern medicine.

AB - Reading Robinson Crusoe 300 years after its first publication can help us understand two major fantasies of our current moment: the desire to be in complete possession of oneself and thus invulnerable to the endless reconfigurations of the world one merely happens to be part of; and the desire to return to the times when society was ordained as an aggregate of self-contained, self-actualizing individuals. Both fantasies have been invested in the creation of the two paradigmatic figures of our time – the neoliberal homo economicus and the white masculine master of his property and affairs. Both desires have, additionally, rested upon numerous erasures not only of vulnerability and inter/dependence in general, but also and significantly of the body. I argue, however, that the desire to be bodiless goes hand in hand with the desire to place and possess bodies, as material or symbolic property, which are for various reasons denied the capacity to be self-actualizing, indivisible, and independent. Robinson Crusoe works as a fictional figure with which a self-possessed master identifies with and desires to return to.

AB - This volume presents an attempt to conjoin two related, but in essence deeply problematic notions: vulnerability and exclusion. Their relationship today seems unambiguous: if one is excluded, one is, in all probability, vulnerable and vice versa. We take this as a given. However, we also wish to see what lies behind that givenness, and in a certain sense produces it. Like many of the notions that have taken shape in philosophy and social theory, once they become part of the policy language of righting wrongs, they tend to become hollow and stripped of their multiple layers of meaning. Often, they portray a phenomenon as something that can be singled out and cast outside a larger and inevitably more complex frame. Both exclusion and vulnerability are cases in point: certain groups/populations/identities are vulnerable, thus actions need to be taken to alleviate their vulnerability; certain groups/populations/identities are excluded, and so ways to include them need to be found.
Without questioning the fact that there are indeed such groups, assembled and categorized as vulnerable and/or excluded, we wanted to understand why this is the case; more specifically, in what ways these groups are related to others (those deemed ‘invulnerable’ or those excluded on some different basis); how, and from where, the boundary between the excluded and the included arises; what the stakes of ‘invulnerability’ (to which the alleviation of vulnerability supposedly leads) might be; in what ways such categorizations preclude or forestall the agency of the excluded/the vulnerable. What might be the conclusive frame to which actions of inclusion and alleviation of vulnerability lead – one in which all are recognized as vulnerable and where the notion of exclusion has ultimately lost its meaning, or one in which the desired invulnerable individuals monitor the boundaries of their communities or nation-states, caring for the included and warding off those who do not belong? The questions themselves are certainly not new, although the answers to them have assumed a specific form and content in the 21st century. With this volume we want to emphasize both their novelty and their deep-seatedness. Following a variety of critical approaches, all of the contributions here attempt to shed light on the dense theoretical content and complex conceptual history of such notions.
