„ograničene“ i „masovne“ proizvodnje.

postoje paralelno, u svom ofl ajn i onlajn okruženju“ (Kacer, 2019). Pandemija kovid 19
promociji kulturnog identiteta grada.
kulture iskoristile prednosti savremene tehnologije u promociji kulturnog identiteta grada,
Strategije u kulturi u kriznim
situacijama Filozofskog fakulteta u Beogradu.
AB - Digital spaces are becoming increasingly signifi cant in the process of promoting
the cultural identity of cities. According to Chayko, people, by using digital technologies,
construct an environment that represents a socio-mental space, as the connections
maintained within it are more mental than physical. Therefore, “today we are navigating
between two equal living spaces that exist in parallel, in our offl ine and online environments”
(Katzer, 2019). The COVID-19 pandemic has (re)activated debates on the utopian and
dystopian perspectives of using digital spaces for cultural consumption. This crisis has
highlighted the importance of modern technology in promoting the cultural identity of a city.
The aim of this paper is to illustrate how cultural institutions have utilized the advantages
of modern technology in promoting the cultural identity of a city, while also pointing out the limitations of the digital space in the reception of cultural content. The paper will rely on
data from the research The End of the Season Before the End of the Season? Strategies in
Culture in Crisis Situations conducted by the Institute of Sociological Research, Faculty of
Philosophy in Belgrade.

Against the 'New Janissaries': Anti-Gender Ideology Media Activism in Serbia

AB - The paper analyzes recent activism in the digital sphere by representatives of the new Serbian right, a group of conservative intellectuals with a self-appointed role in what they explicitly call the “culture wars” and particularly engaged in attacks on “gender ideology”. Data gathered from posts, articles, journalistic pieces, and statements in podcasts, in which various aspects of gender and sexuality are tackled will be analyzed using the tools of Civil Sphere Theory. CST seems particularly helpful in this case because these actors and their discourse entertain a multiply ambiguous relation to the idea of “civility”, of which several aspects will be discussed. The first aspect concerns the paradox of “uncivil society”, since the new Serbian right speaks from within civil society and urges civil action in the name of cherished values, but their arguments are based on highly un-civil exclusionary categorizations of whole groups of citizens. The second aspect is that they call for civic, non-institutional, even “guerilla” mobilization of citizens, because state institutions are allegedly colonized by foreign interests and their domestic hirelings, while on the other hand these actors themselves almost always occupy positions of institutional
power, and their activities often result in institutional change (e.g. changed educational policies). Thirdly, the final irony to be discussed is a curious internationalism of this discourse: while it is obsessively protective of the nation and insists that the Serbian state is held captive to foreign powers, especially the USA, almost all the arguments used are not home-grown but rather copied from this same USA, that is, from the American new right.

Culture as Care and Care for Culture During the Pandemic

AB - Immediately after the COVID-19 virus pandemic broke out in Serbia, there were significant changes in the cultural sector. The pandemic affected the cultural sector in terms of prohibition of organizing events during the states of emergency, reduced number of visitors after the states of emergency, cancellation of projects that depended on international cooperation, and consequently the financial incomes decreased radically. Although the Government of the Republic of Serbia adopted a measure of non-refundable financial aid, numerous objections appeared in the public sphere that by this measure the Government did not manage to address problems of cultural workers and some cultural organizations in the pandemics. Despite all the difficulties, including insufficient state support, cultural institutions and organizations tried to adapt to the new conditions and to offer content online, in order to continue their work and active communication with their audience. This paper analyses qualitative data collected in the project "The end of the season before the end of the season? Strategies in the cultural sector in the crisis" conducted by the Institute for Sociological Research of the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Belgrade. Drawing on qualitative interviews with 20 cultural workers from cultural areas that had been particularly threatened during the pandemic such as theatre, festivals, cinemas, and museums, firstly we examine whether cultural workers conceptualized "culture as care". Specifically, it is analysed how cultural workers connect their professional activities (or the lack of them) during the pandemic with the topic of community welfare in crisis conditions. In the second part of the analysis, the focus is shifted to questions of how this population perceives "care for culture" in crisis conditions. Therefore, it is examined whether they identify the state or the other actors (civil society, citizens) as a provider of this care, and how they evaluate the contribution of the state and the other actors to the maintenance of the cultural sector as a public good in practice.

AB - The post-socialist transformation introduced changes not only in the political and economic realms, but in the cultural sphere as well. The transitional model of cultural policy became dominant, which meant mixed funding sources from both public and private sectors participating in creating conditions for the sustainability of cultural manifestations, with the central role of the state. The penetration of a market orientation and poor state funding in the cultural sector negatively affected cultural workers’ economic position and therefore hindered the possibilities of creativity and artistic freedom. All these difficulties and challenges present among cultural workers increased due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic led to bans on cultural events during lockdowns, reduced number of visitors afterwards, cancellation of projects that depended on international cooperation, and financial problems for cultural workers. Despite the challenges, cultural institutions and organizations attempted to adapt to the new conditions by providing online content in order to sustain their programmes and maintain active communication with their audience. This paper focuses on the analysis of qualitative data collected in the project “The end of the season before the end of the season? Strategies in the cultural sector during the crisis” conducted by the Institute for Sociological Research of the Faculty of Philosophy in Belgrade. Drawing on qualitative interviews with 20 cultural workers from cultural areas that were particularly threatened during the pandemic, we analyse the biggest challenges that organizations/cultural institutions were facing during the pandemic (event program/cultural program, human resources, issue of public/employee health safety, finances). Additionally, since setting up online events was in some cases the only way to continue the program, emphasis will be placed on the analysis of the advantages and disadvantages of organizing a cultural event online, and difference between online and offline experience both in organizing cultural events during the pandemic and in the reception of cultural content.

AB - : This paper aims to explore the possibilities of applying discourse analysis as a research technique for analyzing meaningful aspects of social life during the COVID-19 pandemic. The application of discourse analysis (specifically, critical discourse analysis) is examined on the example of two research projects on the discursive constructions of the crisis itself and the reactions of various actors in Serbian society on it, carried out during the pandemic (2021). One of the projects mentioned above was dedicated to the analysis of the symbolic struggles between the representatives of the Serbian Orthodox Church and the civil sphere, and the other one to the analysis of the discourse of the state leadership on Serbia’s response to the crisis caused by the pandemic. Despite the differences in research topics, a similar set of challenges appeared in both research projects, and the central problems concern 1) the selection and availability of material, 2) the absence of precise guidelines for the coding and analysis of the material, 3) the gap between the discourse and practice of the observed actors, 4) the difference between the actors’ discourse and their media representation, and 5) the possibility of identifying the dominant discourse in the media content. The aim of this paper is to problematize the challenges that followed the conduct of both research projects, whether it is the challenges that accompany the application of discourse analysis as a research technique in general, or challenges that arose because we researched pandemics or when the research is conducted in a pandemic. Additionally, the possibilities for overcoming these problems are examined, and finally the advantages of the application of discourse analysis are emphasized, both in a practical sense (especially in the context of the pandemic), and in the epistemic sense.

AB - The presentation analyzes the relationship between literature and city, focusing on the question of how elements of the literary field contribute to the city identity. Starting from the understanding of the literary field as a space that includes literary works, writers, literary events, and institutions, it is discussed how these different components of the field contribute to the sense of the cities’ specificity and uniqueness. The analysis is inspired by the work of Peter Nas and his associates (Nas, 1993, Nas, 1998, Nas, De Groot, Schut, 2011) and more particularly the concept of “urban symbolism”. The notion of “urban symbolism” helps us understand symbolic and ritual structures which reflect the history of the urban community and shape the identity of a city. Following the typology of “urban symbol bearers'' proposed by Peter Nas and his associates, we identified key identity markers of the city which are related to the literary sphere which are related to the literary sphere, such as monuments dedicated to writers and literary characters, literary
institutions (literary museums and libraries), depictions of cities in literary works, literary events, and other related phenomena. The importance of identification of such identity markers, “urban literary symbols”, lies in providing deeper understanding of interconnection between city identity and literary field, as well as, in considering the possibility of using them as a cultural resource for local development. Urban literary symbols connected with the globally most famous authors and books are promotional icons abundantly used in city branding strategies as a tool to raise tourist attractiveness of the city. However, urban literary symbols connected with authors and literary works that did not gain global recognition are unsustainable means to promote the culture of the city, and therefore have been largely overlooked in urban cultural policies.

AB - The article examines the different forms of discursive construction of “talk show host literature” in the literary fi eld in present-day Serbia. Drawing from Bourdieu’s theory, literary production is seen as a fi eld in which constant symbolic struggles are happening between the actors involved in the fi eld (writers, critics, and publishers). In these symbolic struggles, the actors in the field of literary production seek to impose those definitions of literature and standards of valuation of literary works and professional engagement of other actors that are most favourable to them. The term “talk show host literature” was created with the intention to mark the literary works of current or former talk show hosts as worthless literature, and to consequently discredit and symbolically exclude these authors from the fi eld of literary production. When disapproval of “talk show host literature” appears, it is mostly related to the critique of market strategies in the literary fi eld, namely, beliefs that some novels are intentionally created to be sold to a great number of readers and thus enable their authors to gain economic profit and popularity. In some versions of criticism of “talk show host literature” the disapproval of these novels based on the distinction between “high” and mass/popular culture has been reinforced by a negative attitude about “women’s literature”. Bearing in mind the above-mentioned characteristics of the term “talk show host literature”, the paper examines who uses it, how they defi ne it, and accordingly, how it is used in the symbolic struggles that prevail in the fi eld of literary production in Serbia today. Examining the valuation standards by which actors in the literary fi eld evaluate “talk show host literature” reveals how speech about this “type of literature” is used for drawing boundaries of the literary fi eld and for hierarchically classifying actors and categorizing works in the field.

AB - The paper analyses the ways in which the literary sphere, understood as a space that includes
literary works, writers, literary events, and institutions, contributes to the development of city
identity. Based on the typology of urban symbols developed by Peter Nas and associates, in this
paper we identify different types of identity markers of the city, which are related to the literary
sphere, such as monuments dedicated to writers and literary characters, institutions such as
literary museums and libraries, depictions of cities in literary works, literary events, and other
related phenomena. Identification of “urban literary symbols” is an important step in sociological examination of the ways in which elements of the literary sphere contribute to the city’s
recognizability, as well as in considerations of the possibility to use them as a cultural resource
for local development. Unlike the existing literature about the use of objects and phenomena
from the sphere of culture for city branding where the emphasis is mostly on film and music,
this work focuses on objects and phenomena from the sphere of literature, so therefore the
analysis considers the specifics of literary production in a global context.

Breaking through the Pandemic Incertitudes: From Hazy Health Care Instruction to Commensuration of Worths among Serbia’s Young Professionals

AB - Rather cumbersome ontological situation initiated with the 2020 pandemic has created a great amount of unease within common worlds, particularly in terms of health risks and hazy healthcare instructions. A series of uncanny and confusing moments both have been sparked by possibly deterrent effects coming with infection and transmission risks, as well as by being abridged for effective tools such as standards and procedures for coping with the virus. Exactly this triangle formed between familiar engagements and resettling within pandemic reality, incertitude brought with infection risks and hazy healthcare procedures, along with overall discrepancies in civic response to pandemic, was a principal subject of our research. Namely, we intended to discern how the uncertainty brought with the puzzling intrusion of the COVID-19 was confronted by young professionals in Belgrade, Serbia, particularly having in mind their social status. Based on 20 interviews conducted during the first months of the pandemic in the spring of 2020, our exploration traces both the attempts to consolidate the familiar environment anew into coherent arrangements and to commensurate worths as specific normative principles deployed in these operations. Inspired by pragmatic sociology and more specifically, Thévenot’s concept of regimes of engagement, we first explore the adaptations evolving within familiar arrangements. Principally, we denote that confronting with the uncertainty embodied in a mute presence of the virus meant conducting a fragile politics of beings within this regime, molded through personal bonds, care and intimacy. Particularly, we describe how the hygienic “purifying” was guided not only by a fear of being contaminated, but also has induced a rather vigilant mode of communication with the “intruder” and “drifting” through hazy instructions. Later moment indicates a plurality of assessments of the healthcare itself: for this, highly educated cohort, it meant a critical assessment of instructions, a dose of distrust for medical experts due to fuzzy instructions given in the media and the general reliance on DIY strategy, which involved exploration of “valid” procedures on the Internet. Albeit this lack of referential stability was eventually consolidated into specific pandemic objectivity, surrounded with disinfectants and thresholds put in immediate spaces, a plurality of engagements also evolved into principal tension between this “protective shield” in which the domestic world was wrapped and the civic world. The second problem that we analyze therefore encompasses a commensuration of worth performed by our informants and their judgmental attitude towards actions that might harm the familiar arrangement. Namely, our findings show that
this purifying politics targeted a situated, materialized endeavor in order to solve the basic tension: how to protect and solidify familiar environment by drawing upon an ethical corpus of “taking care of family”. Thus, in conclusion we illustrate how this “pandemic deontology” involved a tense encounter with “aberrations” found in civic polity as these, assumedly, have distorted the common principle of equivalence. Specifically, we describe three major criticisms targeting the civic world: excessive hoarding of goods, improper wearing of masks and a lack of responsibility for others. Overall, these critiques targeting the civic world have both put to scrutiny the healthcare system in Serbia seeing it as unreliable, but also had an aim to protect it against excesses that would further harm it.

AB - In this article, we analyse how novels written on peripheral languages access the centre of the
global literary world. The empirical section of this paper focuses on the case of the contemporary
novels primarily written in Serbian, their circulation beyond national borders and linguistic and
social obstacle that determine the circulation. Based on qualitative analysis of interviews with thirty
Serbian authors we investigate their strategies and challenges that they face during the process of
translation of their novels and finding publishers abroad. The analysis points to power relation in
global literary filed, and variety of factors (political, economic, cultural, and social) that influence
translation process and publishing mechanisms. The article also suggests that position in the local
field, in terms of distinction between the small-scale or large-scale production, affects writers’
willingness to participate in the centre of the global field and their interpretations of the global
literary market and its logics. On the theoretical level, using Bourdieu’s field theory and concept
of symbolic capital developed in postbourdiusian studies of the global market of translation, helps
explaining power relation in the local and global literary filed, as well as opportunities and
limitations experienced by Serbian novelist in connection to entering the centre of the global
literary field.

AB - This paper analyses the theoretical and the epistemological contribution of the
semi - peripheral approach developed in the work of Marina Blagojević Hughson to
the contemporary sociological study of cultural production and consumption. The
first part of the paper presents characteristics of the semiperipheral approach of
Blagojević Hughson with special reference to the relationship between the theory
of semiperipherality and postcolonial sociology. The second part of the paper
examines the cognitive and theoretical benefits of the concept of semiperiphery as
Blagojevic had articulated it, in terms of research in the field of sociology of culture.
On the example of the most significant research projects in the field of sociology of
cultural consumption and cultural production, it is examined what implementation
of semiperipheral perspective brings in these research areas. It argued that the
semiperipheral approach enables more adequate research of various cultural
phenomena and attitudes towards objects and phenomena from the sphere of
culture, not only in the form of precise mapping of differences between these
phenomena in the centre, semiperiphery, and periphery, but it also encourages
critical interpretation of cultural and symbolic elements of the social order in the
context of the global distribution of power. Advantages of using the semiperipheral
approach are reflected on a conceptual level - on the one hand in the form of a
critical approach to the conceptual apparatus developed in research conducted at
the centre, and on the other hand in encouraging original theoretical development
on the semiperiphery.

theory developed by Jeffrey Alexander.

Engaging with the Politics of Purity: Discerning the Materiality and Semiotics of Risk in Encountering with COVID-19 among Serbia’s Young Professionals

AB - The abrupt break the COVID-19 made on a planetary scope has forced a number of adaptations of collective life, while its mutating nature and enormous ability to spread brought a deterrent effect due to apparent infection risk. Besides an impulse to purify the society from danger that was born in the public, COVID-19 warned that the politics of collective life evolve on level on material living when encountering such a mysterious non-human entity. Our principal intention in this paper follows this puzzle and aims to reflect upon the intrusion of the COVID-19 based on 20 interviews
conducted with young professionals in Belgrade, Serbia. An aim is to discern how it caused semiotic and interpretative confusion, eventually provoking distinct alternations of everyday spaces that now succumbed to a novel hygiene regime. Our understanding follows recent ontological turns that accentuated an intricate continuum of transactions that humans regularly practice through a coexistence with things, as well as fragile semiotic operations and requires focusing on a horizon where this agential interplay occurs. While we underscore ethical motives of actors to pursue official measures against the spread of the virus as significant, we also argue that politics have to be understood as an evaluative and speculative process. Encounter with the COVID-19, namely, has included not only delimiting of an “enemy” that lead to purifying practices, but also adaptation to uncertain, mutating and acting traits of ‘other’. In this way, we seek to turn towards more engaged and practical definition of politics, as situated, materializied endeavor, centered around distribution of agential properties: rights, identities and substances.

AB - This paper is devoted to the analysis of the relationship between social stratification
and musical taste in present-day Serbia. Following a discussion about Bourdieu’s
conceptualization of taste and contemporary theoretical approaches that rehabilitate
Bourdieusian heritage, the presence of homology between social positions and musical
tastes is tested in Serbian society. On the basis of collected qualitative material via
interview, the author examines whether music serves as a symbolic mean that is used by
the interviewees to place themselves in certain social groups by drawing symbolic
boundaries between them and other social groups that are associated with other musical
tastes. The analysis showed that there are differences in musical tastes among respondents
based on their position on the stratification scale, manifested in choices and ways of listening to music, as well as that mechanisms of classification are hidden in speech about
musical tastesу.

Analiza će se vršiti u tri ključne vremenske tačke: 2003. godine (u periodu ubrzane konsolidacije kapitalističkog sistema društvenih odnosa), 2012. godine (u vreme velikih efekata svetske ekonomske krize, prvenstveno u vidu zaustavljanja rasta, porasta nezaposlenosti i siromaštva) i u današnje vreme.

traže uporište u borbi protiv rasprostranjenih patrijarhalnih vrednosti i normi,
kako u javnoj, tako i u privatnoj sferi. U prvom delu rada autorka pruža kraći
prikaz razvoja feminističkih ideja i pokreta u muslimanskim društvima kako bi
kontekstualizovala nastanak islamskog feminizma.
AB - This paper aims to explore ideas, principles, and demands of Islamic
feminism. In this article, the term Islamic feminism includes interpretations of the
Quran and the hadith in women’s perspective as well as practices based on these
interpretations that are dedicated to the struggle against widespread patriarchal
values and norms, in public and in private sphere. In the first part of this paper,
the author presents a brief review of feminist ideas and movements in order to
contextualize development of Islamic feminism. The second part provides main
insights from gender-sensitive interpretations of the Quran and activist contributions
induced by these interpretations. The third part is devoted to the investigation of
the relationship between Islamic feminism and other feminist approaches.

AB - After a review of the history of student protests in Belgrade and of the
relationship between professors and students therein, the paper examines the relationship between these actors during the blockade of the Belgrade Faculty of
Philosophy in 2014. In order to analyse this relationship, the author considers
the following questions: did professors show any understanding for student demands? did both students and professors perceive the blockade as a legitimate
form of struggle for student demands? has there been any solidarity between professors and students during the protest? Student attitudes toward the protest and
the professors’ role in it are described first, while the second part of the paper
discusses the professors’ attitude toward the blockade and their understanding of
their own role in it.
