AB - Predmet ovog rada je antropološka analiza urbanog stanovanja, svakodnevice društvenog
prostora i prakse zajedničkog u novobeogradskim blokovima 22 i 45. Prvi cilj ovog rada je da
ispita i objasni promene u kulturi i načinu urbanog stanovanja u novobeogradskim blokovima.
zajednici. Treći cilj ovog istraživanja je ispitivanje i procena dometa kritičkog angažmana
samorganizovanih praksi i komšijskog udruživanja na Novom Beogradu. Konceptualnu i teorijsku
osnovu istraživanja čine Lefevrova teorija proizvodnje društvenog prostora, kritičke teorije
zajedničkih dobara i teorije privatizma. Etnografsko istraživanje novobeogradskih blokova 22 i 45
blokova.
privatizmu i prisvajanju kroz potrošnju i transformaciju, a zatim o privatizmu javnih prostora i
AB - The subject of this study is an anthropological analysis of urban dwelling, everydayness of
social space, and commoning practices in New Belgrade's large housing estates (blocks) 22 and
45. The first goal of this study is to examine and explain changes in the culture and manner of
urban dwelling in New Belgrade. The second goal of this research is to expand the focus of
anthropological research on housing towards the perception of urban dwelling in a broader sense,
inseparable from life in the neighborhood and local community. The third objective of this research
is to examine and evaluate the scope of critical engagement of self-organized practices and
neighborhood engagement in New Belgrade. The conceptual and theoretical basis of the study is
Lefebvre's theory of the production of social space, the critical theory of commons, and the theories
of privatism. The ethnographic research of blocks 22 and 45 was carried out from June 2020 to
December 2021. The research was carried out through three consequent steps: a senso-biographic
walking, participant-generated photo-elicitation, and in-depth interviews at home. Twenty
residents of the researched large housing estates participated in the study.

The interpretation of the results of the empirical part of the research is organized into four parts.
First, the results related to the everyday life of the New Belgrade blocks and housing satisfaction
are interpreted. Then, in the second part, the findings on the refamilification of New Belgrade as
a specific subtype of gentrification of the post-Yugoslav, post-socialist neoliberal city are
presented. In the third part, the insights about dwelling practices in the narrower sense, that is,
about housing privatism and appropriation through consumption and transformation, are
interpreted. After that, the insights about the privatism of public spaces and changes in attitudes
towards common space and property relations resulting from the "give-away" privatization of
public housing stock are discussed. Finally, in the fourth part, insights about neighborhood self-
organization and activism in New Belgrade are presented, and the critical scope of activism based
on the culture of privatism is discussed.

AB - In sociological research, photography is most commonly used to supplement presented
data and less frequently as a data collection technique. This paper focuses on using
photography to examine the gender aspect of poverty in rural areas of Serbia. Through
the application of photo-elicitation, data were collected in field research during 2015 in
Serbia. The data include photographs taken by girls and women beneficiaries of social
services. Additionally, they incorporate the notes on the motives and interpretation
of the photographs taken, along with transcripts of interviews conducted with the
photographers a month after the photography sessions. The research has shown that
photography, as a medium, connects the emotional experiences of poverty among
research participants with the factual conditions of their lives in material deprivation
and isolation. Consequently, it offers the possibility of articulating diverse meanings of
poverty. The diversity of meanings of poverty is evident in the specific social categories
to which the interviewees in this study belong, such as persons with disabilities, for
example. Based on the findings of this research, the use of photo-elicitation emerges
as particularly significant in sociological studies that involve the exploration of subjective
meanings and experiences of specific population groups, such as girls and women living
in poverty in rural areas of Serbia.

AB - This chapter examines olfactory landscapes and othering practices reflected through the categorization of unpleasant smells in an urban environment, taking place in a middle-class socialist-era large housing estate in Belgrade. The data is drawn from two consecutive methodological steps: an online questionnaire and sensory walks conducted with residents of New Belgrade’s housing estate. Olfactory claims made by middle-class inhabitants of the researched housing estate are divided into three categories referring to a three- stage series of distinctions and othering practices: external Others, internal Others, and double Others. Looking at the intersection of class and race, the chapter argues that olfactory constructions play a significant role in the way collective identities are tacitly (re)produced and puts forward the idea that the production of “otherness” of lower social classes is interwoven with the fabric of the middle-class white body epitomizing civility, culture, modernity, and propriety.

AB - New Belgrade blocks have a contradictory reputation. On the one hand, they are large housing estates constructed in the late 1960s and early 1970s, lacking maintenance over the past half-century. Due to the giveaway privatization of the public housing stock, limited capacity of public utilities and the unresolved status of open block spaces, the dwelling units, common areas and the public spaces within the estates have been poorly maintained. The ageing buildings have leaky roofs, flooded basements, and deteriorating thermal insulation. Nevertheless, despite these drawbacks and the long-standing portrayal of a "concrete ghetto" in Serbian cinema, New Belgrade still is a desirable place to live. Based on the ethnographic study of two residential blocks, this paper delves into the contentious realm of urban transformation, focusing on the gentrification process in New Belgrade. Through a meticulous ethnographic exploration conducted between May 2020 and December 2021, this research sheds light on the complexities of "soft" gentrification and offers insights into the lived realities of young professional parents. This paper suggests that the YUPPS, attracted by the architectural value and infrastructural qualities of the socialist-modernist housing estates, are affluent in both the economic and the social capital and thus represent the forerunners of the gentrification process in New Belgrade. Furthermore, by analyzing the transformation of public spaces, the research uncovers the growing trend of childification, reflecting the new values and preferences of the emerging creative and technocratic middle-class residents that displace poor homeowners of the socialist-middle class. In summary, the paper argues that New Belgrade, although gentrified, is still living up to its founding ideal of becoming a family-friendly middle-class utopia. By emphasizing these insights, this paper contributes to the broader discourse on gentrification, urban transformation, and the complexities of class dynamics in post-transitional cities.

“Keep up the Good Work, Za naš Kej!” Citizens’ Passive Support to the Local Activist Group

AB - Deep-rooted political turbulence, along with the present hybrid regime, have resulted in an undesirable social, economic and political milieu in Serbia. Such an atmosphere is a fertile ground for a grey economy, corruption, nepotism and restrictions to media freedoms. These ‘unconventional’ means of social functioning, have caused a decline in trust towards state institutions and proportionally, increase of citizen participation in non-institutional models of engagement.

The aim of this paper is to analyse one such model of non-institutional engagement: the local activist group Za naš Kej, operating in the area Savski blokovi (Sava apartment blocks) in New Belgrade. The authors analysed local residents’ perception of the activist group Za naš Kej in comparison to the group’s narratives and actions. By using a grounded theory approach authors explained the role of groups such as Za Naš Kej in the development of participatory and deliberative democracy within the local community.

Our data indicates that Za naš kej, despite its local character, does not have a strong foothold in the community, and thus receives only passive support. Citizens perceive Za naš kej as mediator between local institutions and residents of the Sava apartment blocks. Despite the failure to mobilise a wider group of citizens for their cause, this activist group continues to be a relevant (political) actor within the local community.
AB - Duboko ukorenjene političke turbulencije, zajedno sa sadašnjim hibridnim režimom, dovele su do nepoželjnog društvenog, ekonomskog i političkog miljea u Srbiji. Takva atmosfera je plodno tlo za sivu ekonomiju, korupciju, nepotizam i ograničavanje medijskih sloboda. Ovi „nekonvencionalni“ načini društvenog funkcionisanja, izazvali su smanjivanje poverenja u državne institucije i srazmerno tome, porast učešć a građana u vaninstitucionalnim modelima angažovanja.

abstract = "Deep-rooted political turbulence, along with the present hybrid regime, have resulted in an undesirable social, economic and political milieu in Serbia.

Despite the failure to mobilise a wider group of citizens for their cause, this activist group continues to be a relevant (political) actor within the local community., Duboko ukorenjene političke turbulencije, zajedno sa sadašnjim hibridnim režimom, dovele su do nepoželjnog društvenog, ekonomskog i političkog miljea u Srbiji. Takva atmosfera je plodno tlo za sivu ekonomiju, korupciju, nepotizam i ograničavanje medijskih sloboda. Ovi „nekonvencionalni“ načini društvenog funkcionisanja, izazvali su smanjivanje poverenja u državne institucije i srazmerno tome, porast učešć a građana u vaninstitucionalnim modelima angažovanja.

Pasteloza - Refurbishing of the PPR heritage

AB - Colourful zigzags, arcade game motifs, geometric figures, pseudo-frames of windows and even infantile drawings of flora and fauna – those are just some of the visible symptoms of the aesthetical and urbanistic chaotic condition also known as Polish pasteloza. One of the most common readings is that the excuse of thermal insulation is being (ab)used in order to radically erase the urbanistic, cultural and political heritage of Polish People’s Republic (PPR) from the city landscape. On the other hand, inhabitants of ‘pastelized’ housing estates claim to be satisfied not only with the insulation but also with their role in decision-making processes. A sense of alienation from one’s home seems to have gone away, together with the centralized state administration, and it is being replaced by citizen participation. The possibility of vindication of pasteloza’s ‘crimes against aesthetics’ will be deliberated in this paper – in order to pave a path for more complex understanding of this phenomenon that could offer a solution for achieving a compromise between aesthetics and civic participation in post-transition processes.
