Recognition as a Counterhegemonic Strategy

AB - Building on the analyses of cultural hegemony in the works of Nancy Fraser and Wendy Brown, I argue in the paper that the historic bloc (order of cultural hegemony) of post-Fordist capitalism is characterized by a particular dynamic between several ‘axes’ of hegemony that gives rise to the ‘paradox of engagement/disengagement’. The ‘progressive-expertocratic’ axis of hegemony creates a subject-position of the ‘engaged self’, a figure embodying a certain promise of political agency that is simultaneously obstructed by other, depoliticizing axes of hegemony. This dynamic is conducive to the rise of contemporary right-wing authoritarianism, which purports to fulfill this promise of political agency through a series of displacements – the counterhegemonic left, I argue, has so far not formulated an effective alternative to this strategy. In the second part, I explore the potential of Axel Honneth’s theory of recognition, in particular his concept of ‘interpersonal respect’, for grounding a left strategy of connecting (mutually articulating) the hegemonic figure of the ‘engaged self’ with a progressive politics of social transformation. To that end, I elaborate Honneth’s perspective by means of an argument about the role of trust in the context of societal crises that Igor Cvejić, Srđan Prodanović and I have recently formulated.

AB - Addressing the relationship among social critique, violence, and domination, Violence and Reflexivity: The Place of Critique in the Reality of Domination examines a critique of violent and unjust social arrangements that transcends the Enlightenment/postmodern opposition. This critique surpasses the “reflexive violence” of classical enlightenment universalism without committing the “violence of reflexivity” by negating any possibility of collective radical social engagement. The unifying thread of the collection, edited by Marjan Ivković, Adriana Zaharijević, and Gazela Pudar-Draško, is a sensitivity to the field of tension created by these extremes, especially for the issue of how to articulate a non-violent critique that is nevertheless “militant,” in the sense that it creates a rupture in an institutionalized order of violence. In Part One, the contributors examine the theoretical resources that help us move beyond the reflexive violence of the classical Enlightenment social critique in our quest for justice and non-domination. Part Two brings together nuanced attempts to reconsider the dominant modern understandings of violence, subjectivity, and society without succumbing to the violence of reflexivity that characterizes radically anti-Enlightenment standpoints.

AB - This paper presents three interconnected examinations of Asger Sørensen’s arguments in Capitalism, Alienation and Critique, which thematize Sørensen’s overarching understanding of the relationship between theory and practice: his general methodological perspective on critical theory, its distinctive epistemology and its anchoring in the empirical world. The paper authors each try to push Sørensen on these crucial points by considering how Sørensen’s variant of critical theory actually operates, scrutinizing in more detail the particular relationship between the ‘experience of injustice’, which for Sørensen constitutes the empirical foothold for critical theory, and the theoretical diagnosis of social reality which the critical theorist should formulate against the backdrop of this experience.
AB - Ovaj rad predstavlja tri povezana ispitivanja argumentacije Asgera Serensena u Kapitalizmu,
tog iskustva

Solidarnost i autonomija u kontekstu pandemije: dominantni rečnici kritike i skica alternative

AB - The paper analyzes dominant vocabularies of the critique of the official Covid-19 pandemic policy in Serbia, which are considered representative of the general emancipatory potential of the pandemic, in the sense of its potential to delegitimize neoliberal democracy. The paper examines two such vocabularies which possess a certain critical potential in this respect – the “proceduralist liberal-democratic” one and the vocabulary of “life before economy” – in order to point to the incapacity of these vocabularies to grasp the state pandemic policy as a form of social domination which counters the threat to the legitimacy of the political order created by the pandemic. The author analyzes the nature of social domination that can be read out of the main narrative of the pandemic policy – the narrative of “undisciplined citizens” – and concludes that this is a type of “complex domination” (Luc Boltanski) which possesses the structure of a “normative paradox” (Axel Honneth and Martin Hartmann). Finally, the paper presents an outline of an alternative left critique of the pandemic policy which formulates a preliminary model of the “intersubjective constitution” of personal autonomy in the democratic public sphere as the basic precondition for the capcacity of citizens to express mutual solidarity.

AB - The main focus of our paper is on a specific form of democratic discourse, used in different types of social engagement actions (petitions, speeches, intellectual engagement, ad hoc citizens' protests, social movements etc.), that attempts to politicize a certain issue by challenging the neoliberal principle of instrumentalism which argues that democratic procedures can legitimately be abandoned in the name of the greater efficiency of socioeconomic development. Therefore, we start from identifying the discourse of "neoliberal instrumentalism" and its relative success in delegitimizing the welfare state and mechanisms of democratic decision making and we formulate a conceptual model of a democratic counter-narrative named "anti-instrumentalist discourse". Through empirical analyses of discourse used by We Won't Let Belgrade D(r)own initiative, that mobilized against the Serbian government's urban project Belgrade Waterfront we try to illustrate the applicability and the heuristic value of the proposed model. The data for the analyses were collected through 1) desk analysis of available secondary data on the Belgrade Waterfront project, 2) official statements and proclamations of the We Won't Let Belgrade D(r)own initiative, 3) semi-structured interviews with four core members of the initiative.

Neoliberal Instrumentalism and the Fight Against it: the We Won't Let Belgrade D(r)own Movement

AB - The article focuses on the new anti-neoliberal social movements in post-Socialist Serbia, most notably the Belgrade movement “ We Won’ t Let Belgrade D(r)own” . It does this by proposing an
analytical framework for analysing the way they deploy their critique of what the authors term “ neoliberal instrumentalism”, a discourse of justification that legitimises the curtailing of
democracy in the name of economic efficiency. The article also addresses Igor Štiks’ s “ disaggregation thesis” and suggests that, rather than being a “ failure” , the disaggregation of the
movements such as “ We Won’ t Let Belgrade D(r)own” at the initial stage of their development can be an advantage for mobilising specific segments of the population.

AB - In this symposium, Alessandro Ferrara’s recent book The Democratic Horizon: Hyperpluralism and the Renewal of Political Liberalism – an attempt to expand the framework of Rawls’ political liberalism in order to enable it to meet the challenge of today’s hyperpluralism – is discussed from a variety of angles by four contributors. Among the themes addressed are the potential of political liberalism for grounding a critical attitude; the different potential for accommodation offered by political liberalism for religious and moral, as opposed to economic, pluralism; Rawls’ implicit understanding of truth; the prospects of true democracy in ethnically divided societies that embrace consociationalist and particularly consensualist forms of governance; and the proper role of human rights in paths from decency to democracy from the perspective of an expanded political liberalism. In the final section, Alessandro Ferrara replies to his critics and accepts some of their suggestions.

The Intersubjectivist Conception of Autonomy: Axel Honneth’s Neo-Hegelian Critique of Liberalism

AB - The paper reconstructs Axel Honneth’s Neo-Hegelian critique of the classical-liberal conception of autonomy and his articulation of an alternative view of personal autonomy as the property of certain types of intersubjective relations of recognition in modernity, developed most systematically in Honneth’s recent work Freedom’s Right (Das Recht der Freiheit). The analysis of Freedom’s
Right focuses on reconstructing Honneth’s critique of the ‘negative’ and ‘reflexive’ types of freedom (autonomy) articulated within the liberal tradition, and contrasting the former two with the conception of ‘social freedom’ (the intersubjectivist conception of autonomy) that Honneth formulates through a detailed ‘normative reconstruction of modernity’. Finally, the paper considers the proximity of Honneth’s ‘Hegelian liberalism’ to communitarianism.
