The paper examines multilingualism in interethnic families among the Banat Swabians from the 1950s to the present day. The analysis is based on the generational memory of the interlocutors, mostly born before or immediately after the Second World War, recorded during field research in the Serbian Banat. Banatian Swabian families in the interwar period are shown to be mostly endogamous and diglossic, using Swabian as an informal conversational variety and Standard German (Hochdeutsch) as a formal variety. Families were also multilingual in local languages. In the post-war period, German was banned from public use until the 1950s and severely stigmatized, resulting in the language mimicry of the Banat Swabians. Thus, exogamy prevailed, as well as the lannguage shift from German to the languages of the social environment - Hungarian, Serbian, Romanian, etc. In modern times, German has been revitalized, but it has ceased to be a solidarity code in-group and family communication. The paper ...shows that inter-ethnic families of the Banat Swabians compromised between several languages, confessions and ethnic identities.
