Emancipation implies that there exists some kind of docu mented or experienced lack of freedom/equality or some state of slavery or oppression, and represents the act or process of liberation, throwing off the yoke and empowering the subjugated, although the yokes can be very different. It is a voluntary act or process that is often seen as a return to a state of natural freedom from a state of unfreedom. It is an act or process that frees one from the power of another, whether it is slavery, subjugation, dependence or control. The concept gradually evolved to encompass freedom from all forms of oppression. What were once seen as partial “emancipations” have been elevated to a universal call for the “social emancipation” of humanity, championed by reformers and revolutionaries worldwide.sr
