Taj će me put neminovno dovesti i do problema adekvatne definicije, tj. do razloga zbog kojih je teško precizno definisati solidarnost.

AB - Even though Belgrade student protests emerged and ended abruptly after only seven days in June of 1968, they came as a cumulative point of a decade-long accumulated social dissatisfaction and antagonisms, as well as of philosophical investigations of the unorthodox Marxists of the Praxis school (Praksisovci). It surprised the Yugoslav authorities as the first massive rebellion after WWII to explicitly criticize rising social inequality, bureaucratization and unemployment and demand free speech and abolishment of privileges. This article focuses on the intellectual destiny and legacy of the eight professors from the Faculty of Philosophy close to the Praxis school, who were identified as the protests’ instigators and subsequently expelled from the University of Belgrade due to their “ethico-political unsuitability”. Under both international and domestic pressure, they were later reemployed in a separate research unit named the Centre for Philosophy and Social Theory, where they kept their critical edge and argued for political pluralism. From the late 1980s onwards, they and their colleagues became politically active and at times occupied the highest positions in Serbia – Dragoljub Mićunović as one of the founders of the modern Democratic Party and the Speaker of the Parliament, former Serbian President and Prime Minister Vojislav Koštunica and former Prime Minister late Zoran Đinđić. Still, while some members became strong anti-nationalists and anti-war activists, other embraced Serbian nationalism, therefore pivoting the intellectual split into the so called First and Second Serbia that marked Serbian society during the 1990s and remained influential to this day.

“Leben und Gewalt” or “Gewalt und Leben” A Commentary on Paragraph 18 of Walter Benjamin’s “Toward the Critique of Violence”

AB - In paragraph
18 of “Toward the Critique of Violence,” the terms life, living,
and violence,
and
the relations
among them, complicate
Walter Benjamin’s
justification
of divine
violence—
his text’s
main discovery.
This article
seeks to reconstruct
Benjamin’s
uses of life and living
in earlier
texts and to
consider
the potential
influence
of various
authors
he was reading
at the time (Heinrich Rickert, Erich
Unger, Kurt Hiller, Gershom Scholem). Benjamin’s
distinction
between
life and living
is crucial
for his critique
of pacifism
and for his shift in perspective:
he moves the focus
from the victim
to the one committing
murder,
but whose violent
act just might bring justice.

AB - In this paper I would like to reflect
on discipline as a category (as opposed to other
possibilities, such as notion, structure, norm,
protocol, etc.), and explain the quotation marks
in the title, as they can always follow and amend
the word discipline. My intention is to reconstruct
a decades-long resistance to discipline (as
punishment, control, violent pedagogy, militarism,
fanaticism, masculinity, unfreedom), and
to uncover the origin of praise for self-discipline,
un-discipline or interdisciplinarity. Further, I would like to offer a few arguments in favor of
discipline as one of the most important protocols
of social ontology, and the unconditioned condition
of cooperation, life and group work. Discipline
is joint learning, as well as production
and a nurturing of knowledge that constitutes
and sustains an institution. The question is whether
individuals’ discipline indeed makes an institution
necessarily better or more just.

AB - In this brief text, written in honor of the new edition of Valery Savchuk’s
book «Blood and Culture», I would like to present the significance this book, and specifically
the chapter on sacrifice, had when I was writing my doctoral thesis. The connection
between sacrifice, violence and blood is indeed the central theme of Savchuk’s book.
My contribution to this topic is to problematize our positions on sacrifice and the status
of efficiency of sacrifice, as one of the main components of this institute.

In this brief text, written in honor of the new edition of Valery Savchuk’s
book «Blood and Culture», I would like to present the significance this book, and specifically
the chapter on sacrifice, had when I was writing my doctoral thesis. The connection
between sacrifice, violence and blood is indeed the central theme of Savchuk’s book.
My contribution to this topic is to problematize our positions on sacrifice and the status
of efficiency of sacrifice, as one of the main components of this institute.",

AB - The main focus of our paper is on a specific form of democratic discourse, used in different types of social engagement actions (petitions, speeches, intellectual engagement, ad hoc citizens' protests, social movements etc.), that attempts to politicize a certain issue by challenging the neoliberal principle of instrumentalism which argues that democratic procedures can legitimately be abandoned in the name of the greater efficiency of socioeconomic development. Therefore, we start from identifying the discourse of "neoliberal instrumentalism" and its relative success in delegitimizing the welfare state and mechanisms of democratic decision making and we formulate a conceptual model of a democratic counter-narrative named "anti-instrumentalist discourse". Through empirical analyses of discourse used by We Won't Let Belgrade D(r)own initiative, that mobilized against the Serbian government's urban project Belgrade Waterfront we try to illustrate the applicability and the heuristic value of the proposed model. The data for the analyses were collected through 1) desk analysis of available secondary data on the Belgrade Waterfront project, 2) official statements and proclamations of the We Won't Let Belgrade D(r)own initiative, 3) semi-structured interviews with four core members of the initiative.

AB - My intention in this text is to present the most significant contribution of some French philosophers and anthropologists to the notion of reconstruction and advancement of institutions. The paradox of change, reform or transformation of the institution – is an entirely new institution possible? How do institutions die? – lies in the difficulty or even impossibility to change something that manifests what we are as a group. If institutions really present or represent the relations among all of us, how can they be changed in the first place? Whence the capacity for change? What allows for the idea of the “new”?

AB - The main question in this paper is if (and how) in Kant’s theory of sublime the
object could be integrated into an emotional experience. In order to understand this
problem, the ambivalent Kant’s claims will be addressed: (1) about the object as sublime and (2) that correctly understood it is not an object, but the state of the subject
which is sublime. The latter thesis could be even strengthened with accompanying
claim about formlessness of the object, which implies that this object can not be a part
of conscious experience. Further, I will discuss Kant’s thesis about a subreption of a
respect for the object instead of for the idea of humanity in our subject, as well as
various interpretations of it. In the final part of the paper, I will introduce alternative
interpretation which could give us a more plausible outline about the intentionality of
the feeling of sublime. My claim is that Kant uses language available to him in order
to state that in sublime there is no object of cognition in conscious experience. However, the object is constituted as an object of the violent emotional intentionality – sensibility brought under ideas of reason.

Fact of Reason, Social Facts and Evidence

AB - The place of evidence regarding joint commitment and plural action is mostly
reserved for documents and explicit linguistic expressions. This paper considers the
problem of evidence in cases of engaged (jointly committed) social acts where there is
no explicit expression or binding document, yet can still be ascribed to a plural subject.
The argument rests on the double meaning of the term factum as fact (factum brutum)
and deed (factum practica), as well as contemporary debates about the topic of fact of
reason in Kant. The text seeks to show that in certain cases, the execution of an act
or the obligation produced by it can be considered evidence of a plural subject. Thus,
these facts deserve a special position in relation to scientific evidence.

paper has the intention of analyzing the contemporary fundamental challenges
of the scientific methodology of historical science. By placing historiography
in the context of the era in which it operates, in the paper, special attention
will be paid to the revisionist tendencies in national historiography, as
a constituent in the development of historiography released from the
prescriptive norms and principles of scientific methodology, but also precisely
determined facticity. Under the influence of not only global, but also quite
specific particulate domiciliary ideological patterns in the past three decades,
historical revisionism has produced a school of thought that brings to the fore
different ideological manifestations of ethnic nationalism as a dominant social
matrix in modernity, instead of the epistemological and heuristic-interpretive
objectives and tasks of historical science.

Contentious Politics in the European (Post-Socialist) (Semi-)Periphery: Mapping Rebellion and Social Protests in Southeast and Eastern Europe

abstract = "This essay takes a critical and reflective look at two recently published books on contentious politics in the Balkans and Eastern Europe: Social Movements in the Balkans (ed. by F. Bieber and D. Brentin, Routledge 2018) and Ideology and Social Protests in Eastern Europe (V. Stoyanova, Routledge 2018). Focusing on regions somewhat neglected in scholarly analyses of the recent global upsurge of protests, these books aim to fill the gap by highlighting some contextual and regional specificities: a position of economic and geo-political (semi)periphery, weak or unconsolidated democratic institutions, post-socialist and transitional environments, societal (ethnic) divisions, etc. By critically assessing both contributions, in a manner that looks for their complementarity, this essay: examines the characteristics of popular mobilizations and grievances in Southeast and Eastern Europe; questions dominant narratives of political and economic transition and EU integration; re-evaluates socialist heritage and post-socialist political trajectories; discusses the (im) possibilities of articulating political alternatives to representative democracy and free market economy; and addresses the burden of conflicting memories and attitudes towards the region’s socialist past (and, in case of post-Yugoslav states, ethnic conflicts from the 1990s)., Ovaj rad se kritički i polemički osvrće na dve nedavno objavljene knjige o politikama osporavanja na Balkanu i u Istočnoj Evropi: Social Movements in the Balkans (prir. F. Bieber i D. Brentint, Routledge 2018) i Ideology and Social Protests in Eastern Europe (V. Stoyanova, Routledge 2018).
