AB - The article analyzes Aquinas’s participation argument for the real distinction between esse and essentia using his Expositio libri Boetii De hebdomadibus. The article defends the view that in order to prove the real distinction one has to assume or prove the existence of ipsum esse subsistens, i.e. God. In the first chapter Aquinas’ interpretation of Boethius’s texts is expounded
against the background of the rational distinction between the notions of esse and essentia, and the abstract and the concrete way of signifying. The second chapter points to Aquinas’s reinterpretation of Boethius’s term forma essendi as actus essendi. The third chapter is dedicated to the argument for the real distinction against the background of simplicity and unicity of ipsum esse subsistens, to Thomas’s critique of Platonic forms, as well as to the necessity for the proof for the existence of ipsum esse subsistens as a condition for the proof for the real distinction. In conclusion the whole argument from the Expositio libri Boetii De hebdomadibus is summarized.

AB - In now classical article from 1958 dedicated to twofold character of Aquinas’s concept of being Joseph Owens clearly formulates the two complementary features of esse that function in Aquinas’s metaphysics, namely 1) being understood in the terms of essence, form or nature, as essential and 2) being understood as accidental, not in predicamental meaning but as something above and beyond the essence of the thing. Firmly relying on whole Owens’s work, I will try to outline the ways of understanding the meanings of esse in Aquinas, because a) two character of being are two complementary and integral components of created being, b) which are really different.

Platonism, Cartesianism and Hegel's Thought in The Matrix Trilogy

AB - In this article I will try to interpret changes in Neo, the main
character in The Matrix Trilogy, against the background of the ideas of Plato
and Descartes, as well as Hegel’s from his Philosophy of History and The
Phenomenology of Spirit. Although “philosophical” The Matrix Trilogy is
not long-winded and boring film: instead of talking endlessly, the characters
are working ceaselessly, and that work is changing them. Contrary to widespread
opinion, this interpretation does not find the presence of Descartes’
hyperbolic doubt in the first part of trilogy, but first film sees as a pure Platonism.
Nevertheless, there are the Cartesian motifs (e.g. dualism, freeing
mind from preconceived opinions, acquiring different habits of belief). The
result of the first film is the position of Hegelian unhappy consciousness.
This is just a preparation for the key moment of whole Trilogy that is the
dialogue between Neo and Architect. Neo’s decision to chose to save Trinity
is interpreted in Hegel’s terms of the infinite right of the subject to satisfy
himself in his activity and work; because of that, this, sixth Neo is new. After
showing the differences in the objectives of Neo and Agent Smith, and transformations
of the objectives of humans, the third part of the article analyzes
the very end of the Matrix Revolutions, using Marx’s ideas, with some references
to Plato and Nietzsche.

AB - Deliberative democracy holds that, for a democratic decision to be legitimate, it must be preceded by deliberation among decision-makers. This means that democratic decision cannot be merely the aggregation of preferences that occurs in voting. Thus, citizens may change their initial opinions and preferences as a result of the reflection induced by deliberative communication and by taking into account other people’s opinions. The aim of this paper is to outline the view of deliberative democracy developed by Amy Gutmann and Dennis Thompson as well as to address some of the concerns raised by the critics regarding its practical implementation.

AB - In Russia, two decades after the collapse of the Soviet Union, Stalin’s popularity soared in nationwide polls, as many recalled the country’s former prestige and their previous sense of security. Likewise, many Serbs, who formed the largest group in former Yugoslavia, look back with nostalgia to a time of greater national pride and material comfort. By contrast the dominated ethnic populations in that same nation at that same time were frustrated in their striving for national pride. Each polity has a story fashioned by selected and connected events that promote its national interests. Although the physical battle in former Yugoslavia has ended, the divisiveness remains, and is perpetuated by competing narratives of what happened and why. And in Russia, an increasingly emergent “invisible Stalinism” has once again given victims of the repression little validation of their experience. This article offers preliminary observations on the disjunction of narratives in Russia and Serbia, and seeks to explain one of the key impediments to coming to terms with the past.

AB - This paper presents a survey of LGBT attitudes towards the security sector in Serbia. During the five focus groups with LGBT persons, we determined the basic characteristics of police attitudes towards sexual minorities. By examining the relationship between the police and the sexual minorities, the author attempts to determine the institutional practice towards homosexuality. The study also notes the differences between respondents based on their status and the size of their place of residence. This paper looks at events such as the Pride Parade, which lead to the appearance of anti-gay factions and political conflicts.

abstract = "This paper presents a survey of LGBT attitudes towards the security sector in Serbia. This paper looks at events such as the Pride Parade, which lead to the appearance of anti-gay factions and political conflicts.",

AB - This paper identifies the key moments in the development of Actor-Network-Theory through several important work by Bruno Latour. It is possible to discern a number of departures from the initial position of the author (articulated in Laboratory Life) in his latter works. Actor-Network-Theory is presented through a series of “neuralgic” points inherent to and visible within the theory. The solutions which Actor-Network-Theory offers for fundamental problems of sociology, as defined by Latour, are discussed at the end of the paper.

Cultural Aspects of the Current Scandinavian Identity Crisis; The Case of Denmark – Purity Under Attack

AB - In this article I will attempt to show examples of the cultural manifestations of the identity crisis that is currently sweeping over Scandinavia. What is particular about this crisis is that it seems to have struck on most sides of society, while the “Scandinavian model” of the welfare state is slowly crumbling in the wake of the global financial problems. At the center of both this struggle and crisis is the notion of the Homo Scandinavicus; this seems at the same time a threat to existence (by different enemies, depending on one’s stand in the struggle) and contested in its very content. In all Scandinavian countries a so-called “cultural battle” has been articulated and used as heavy artillery when articulating characteristics of either side. It is this battle I will highlight and demonstrate through examples how the “general public” has been taken hostage on this identity battle field. Furthermore, I will give examples of alternative strategies (notably found in the art worlds), and why these have also failed to provide actual functioning alternatives to the leading, rivaling, identity strategies. The nature of this crisis and the ways it manifests itself, are by no means strictly restricted to Scandinavia. Therefore, considerations about manifestations and consequences presents some highly relevant and much more general insights.

Individualno odlučivanje, grupno odlučivanje i deliberacija

AB - Each of us makes a number of decisions, from the less important to those with far-reaching consequences. As members of different groups, we are also actors of group decision making. In order to make a rational decision, a choice-making procedure must satisfy a number of assumptions (conditions) of rationality. In addition, when it comes to group decisions, those procedures should also be “fair.” However, it is not possible to define a procedure of choice-making that would transform individual orders of alternatives based on preferences of perfectly rational individuals into a single social order and still meet conditions of rationality and ethics. The theory of deliberative democracy appeared in response to the impossibility of Social Choice theory. The basic assumption of deliberative democracy is that individuals adjust their preferences taking into account interests of the community. They are open for discussion with other group members and are willing to change their attitudes in order to achieve common interests. Ideally, group members come to an agreement during public discussion (deliberation). Still, this concept cannot completely overcome all the difficulties posed by the theory of social choice. Specifically, there is no solution for strategic and manipulative behavior of individuals. Also, the concept of deliberative democracy faces certain problems particular to this approach, such as, to name but a few, problems with the establishment of equality of participants in the debate and their motivation, as well as problems with the organization of public hearings.

AB - The article discusses the reasons for the construction, in the 1960s, of a memorial to the victims of the former camp Jasenovac in Yugoslavia, although no such memorial was built at the Sajmište site. How should we explain and understand this difference and what do these two sites stand for in Yugoslav discourses about the past? I will argue that the memorial project for Jasenovac was, due to certain developments, seen as a substitute for similar plans at nearly all the former camp locations in Yugoslavia. Because of this substitution, after the mid 1960s none of the other concetration camp sites in the country benefited from federal financing and thus all of them were excluded from having a real chance at being made into a proper memorial site.

First it was thought that chemicals could temporarily or permanently improve his natural abilities, then artificial substitutes, inserts and accessories dominated the vision of his improvement. The most recent possibility announced is the fundamental morphological transformation of his biological composition into a completely unrecognizable, amorphous “entity” capable of taking any form. This trajectory of “improvement” of human capacities could be regarded as a gradual advancement in the realization of the pledge of traditional humanism: that man is special precisely for being able to become anything he chooses.

However, despite the importance of Hayek’s theory of cultural evolution, the tension between his concept of rational liberalism and evolutionary epistemology will be pointe out. This tension limits Hayek’s understanding of cultural evolution. Hayek’s conception of rational liberalism emphasizes the values of individual freedom and benefits of the market system. The term evolutionary epistemology includes the economic phenomena that occur without the participation of consciousness, on the one hand, and activities with the element of purposefulness and intelligibility, on the other.

of a specific Russian version of socialism. Using the logics of the M. Weber’s work
“The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism”, I. Zabaev reveals the categories
that played a dominating role in the people’s consciousness in the pre-revolutionary
Russia. According to his conclusion, these categories were “obedience” and
“resignation”. It was obedience and resignation that assured the salvation (main value
in Orthodoxy) of an Orthodox person. In everyday life such orientations were easily
transformed into the readiness to obey the “superior”. Once elaborated, they turned
to be quite stable and, being separated from their religious roots, ensured a sort of
asceticism on the secular path.

that played a dominating role in the people’s consciousness in the pre-revolutionary
Russia. According to his conclusion, these categories were “obedience” and
“resignation”. It was obedience and resignation that assured the salvation (main value
in Orthodoxy) of an Orthodox person. In everyday life such orientations were easily
transformed into the readiness to obey the “superior”. Once elaborated, they turned
to be quite stable and, being separated from their religious roots, ensured a sort of
asceticism on the secular path.",

AB - The paper follows the discursive path of one of the dominant, and yet forgotten, terms in the history of ideas – that of “degeneration.” The richness of uses and various illuminations of the term, as well as its discursive dispersion and blurring, can be seen from the mid 19th until the first decades of the 20th century. The term was almost inescapable in studies of thinkers from various fields starting in the middle of the 19th century, it was successfully adopted from French, Italian and British medical terminology into the art discourse of modern European societies. By focusing on music, the given term became permanently tied to thinking about relations of music and society in the German-speaking world. In a complex discursive development of the term, the author necessarily made certain choices, paying special attention to the Austro-Hungarian psychologists, Max Nordau who carried the concept of “degeneration” from the medical to the art (and music) sphere. The debate regarding the “degeneration of music,” was developed chronologically, starting from the Second Reich (being the time in which one of the most controversial composers lived, Richard Wagner). While Wagner developed a theory of “degeneration” and its overcoming through “regeneration,” he was still considered “degenerated.” The given example reveals the complexity of the problem we face when we study the concept of “degeneration of music.” The consideration is completed with a glance at the life of “degenerated” musicians and music during the Weimar Republic, that is, their interpretation in the Third Reich.

AB - Persson and Savulescu (2011b) is a largely successful defense of the position promoted in Persson and Savulescu (2008) against Fenton’s critique of this position in Fenton (2009). However, one of Fenton’s essential censures has remained without response: if moral enhancement (ME) is to occur at the genetic or biological level, as Persson and Savulescu suppose it can and ought to, it will not be possible without significant scientific progress, including cognitive enhancement (CE) by bio-medical means. I will offer a response here to this critique Fenton raised—a response Persson and Savulecu did not give. It will be based on the concept of “integrated neuro-enhancement”, abbreviated (C+M) E.

AB - The article outlines the history of the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe in Berlin as a very good example of how long any such procedure is, from idea to realisation, as well as how strong the debate how and whom to commemorate.. Federal Foundation Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe also supervised Memorial to the Murdered Sinti and Roma, Memorial to the Homosexuals Persecuted under the National Socialist Regime and the Memorial to mass murder of patients from mental hospitals. Besides that, the author analyzes the initiatives and sollutions for other monuments in Germany’s capital New Guard Room, as well as the Concentration Camp Sachsenhausen near Berlin.
