AB - The paper deals with a perspective of Christian philosophy on artificial memory erasuse for psychotherapeutic purposes. Its central question is whether a safe and reliable technology of memory erasure, once it is available, would be acceptable from a Christian ethics point of view. The main facet of this question is related to the Christian ethics requirement of contrition for the past wrongs, which in the case of memory erasure of particulary troubling experiences and personal choices would not be possible. The paper argues that there are limits to the ethical significance of contrition in the writings of the leading Christian fathers on the theme (e.g. St. Thomas Aquinas), where excessive suffering and inability to forgive oneself for one’s actions is an impediment to the achivement of tranquility of mind and spiritual redemption, rather than a prerequisite for it. The paper thus concludes that there is no hindrance in principle from the Christian ethics point of view to pursuing a voluntary and selective memory erasure as a psychotherapeutic technique once a fully adequate technology is available.

AB - In contrast to the neo-liberal ideology which dominates much of
modern economic discourse, virtue ethics embraces the same set of morality
for both private and public sphere. In this paper we argue that virtue ethics
need nevertheless not at all be in clash with contemporary economic theory.
Linking the preferences represented by utility functions in neoclassical
economics and the system of values which inspires them can in our view
align economic thinking with broader social thinking. Using this novel
approach, we demonstrate that many economic and social problems can be
solved so as to arrive at efficient outcomes and a higher expected level of
utility compared to a case with separate public and private moralities. For
addressing the problems characteristic of small open economies, our virtue ethics
perspective on economics supports some government intervention as
well as cooperation and solidarity between societies in a similar situation.

AB - The paper presents and discusses some of the most recent and influential arguments in favour of the increasingly liberal use of predator drones for military actions short of war. The author finds most of these arguments fairly weak and lacking capacity to address the fundamental ethical aspects of the technological transition of warfare towards the increasing use of predator drones for military assassinations. The paper concludes with the idea that the damage the use of dronesinflicts on the army and its reception in society, as well as to the inherited social structure itself, is so great that the use of drones is not a cultural advancement in warfare, but rather a drastic step back.

Transitional justice in troubled societies

AB - This book discusses the crucial strategic topic for the practical implementation of transitional justice in post-conflict societies by arguing that the dilemma is defined by the extent to which the actual achievement of the political goals of transition is a necessary condition for the long-term observance and implementation of justice.

While in many cases the ‘blind’ criminal justice does not enhance, and even militates against, the achievement of political transitions, an understanding of transitional justice as a fundamentally political process is novel, controversial and a concept which may shape the future of transitional justice.

This collection contributes to developing this concept both theoretically and through concrete and current case studies from the worlds most pronounced crisis spots for transitional justice.

AB - The paper discusses the most recent developments in the psychotherapeutic methodology in the way of merging with the practical applications of philosophy in counseling. The author argues in favor of the upcoming ‘return’ to Lacanian psychoanalysis as the foundation of psychiatry and illustrates what this return of both psychiatry and psychotherapy to philosophically informed psychoanalysis involves, e.g. with regard to the understanding of psychoses (schizophrenia) and personality disorder (‘borderline personality disorder’). The paper concludes that the contemporary methodological synergy between psychotherapy and the philosophical contextual interpretation techniques is not a ‘revolution’ in psychotherapy, but rather the outcome of a natural development process for psychotherapy.

AB - The paper argues that successful corporate leadership involves an irreducible humanistic dimension, namely that it is a task for companies to ensure that the employee's workplace actually contributes to the individuals' quality of life. Working hours take increasing parts of our overall lives, and in many cases we spend more time at work than with our loved ones. Thus the traditional ethical requirements of companies to be fair and impartial to their employees are no longer sufficient. Friendship with the company is the relationship which most closely describes the ideal working arrangement and at the same time founds a new generation of norms to govern corporations' behavior.

AB - The need for philosophical practice to integrate various methods, both conceptual and those based on the use of emotions, raises the question as to whether its methodology is necessarily eclectic, in terms of the collection of various methodologies used in philosophy, or whether there is a way to move beyond eclecticism. This is the main subject of this paper. In other words, the question is whether there is such a thing as an ‘integrative’ methodology and, if so, what distinguishes such a method from mere eclecticism. In this text, we define the methodological procedure of integrativeness as the process of systematizing perspectives into an orientational answer to the demands of a specific problem. What differentiates such an approach from mere summation is a new contribution that results from a synergistic and systematic meeting of positions and argumentations whose final result differs from its initial elements. Diversity in the form of a multidimensional relationship towards life and the world results in numerous perspectives, which is a value that should be cultivated and integrated into a reflective and actional perception of the world.

Vrednosni narativ u moralnom opravdanju međunarodne intervencije

AB - The focus of this chapter is on the argument that the use of intelligence in security policy is rarely predicated upon the need to find out the truth about events (and much less any comprehensive truth about the conflict that intelligence collection arises from or is intended to prevent). It is, rather, predicated upon a rights game, where the protection of a set of rights (arising from sovereignty, citizenship or other forms of belonging to a political or moral community) is the real objective. Such a shift in focus, from finding out the truth to using what appears to be the truth in order to advance competing sets of rights, allows controversial methods of intelligence collection, processing and operational use to purport to a moral justification where, if the focus was the truth, no such justification would be possible. This chapter thus deals with an epistemology of intelligence ethics, showing that such ethics will depend on the type of epistemology projected onto intelligence work. The chapter argues that any type of intelligence is best understood as a quasi-epistemic game, rather than a truth-driven process that is subject to a morality dictated by a truth-driven epistemology. This has significant consequences for the professional ethics of intelligence work, as well as for the status of intelligence in the security policy of a democratic state.

The UN International War Crimes Tribunals: Transition Without Justice?

TY - BOOK
AU - Fatić, Aleksandar
PY - 2015
UR - http://rifdt.instifdt.bg.ac.rs/123456789/1794
AB - Bachmann and Fatic look back at the achievements and shortcomings of both tribunals from an interdisciplinary perspective informed by sociology, political science, history, and philosophy of law and based upon on two key notions: the concepts of legitimacy and efficiency. The first asks to what extent the input (creation) of, the ICTY and the ICTR can be regarded as legitimate in light of the legal and public debate in the early 1990s. The second confronts the output (the procedures and decisions) of the ICTY and the ICTR with the tasks both tribunals were assigned by the UN Security Council, the General Assembly, and by key organs (the president and the chief prosecutors). The authors investigate to what extent the ICTY and the ICTR have delivered the expected results, whether they have been able to contribute to 'the maintenance of peace', 'stabilization' of the conflict regions, or even managed to provide 'reconciliation' to Rwanda. Furthermore, the book is concerned with how many criminals, over whom the ICTY and the ICTR wield jurisdiction, have actually been prosecuted and at what cost.

Offering the first balanced and in depth analysis of the International Criminal Tribunals, the volume provides an important insight into what lessons have been learned, and how a deeper understanding of the successes and failures can benefit the international legal community in the future.

AB - This volume presents the state of the art of philosophical practice worldwide from the perspectives of leading philosophical practitioners, both counselors and institutional consultants. Philosophical practice has developed in different directions in different parts of the world, with the focus in Europe and North America being mostly on client counseling and corporate consultancy, while in Asia it is more community-based and more closely aligned with psychotherapy. In all cases, philosophical practitioners strive to transcend the boundaries of academic philosophy and reach out to the public, to corporations, to the policy makers, to the medical, legal and many other professions. The chapters of this book illustrate both the breadth of philosophical practice and its various methodological directions, while, at the same time, showing how philosophy can be relevant to everyday life, not just for individuals, but for the economy, the government, international organizations, the helping and therapeutic professions, and the educational system. The volume is primarily a companion for students of applied philosophy on all levels, as well as for modern psychotherapists, educational professionals and academics. It is designed to support a variety of undergraduate and postgraduate courses in philosophy and applied psychology, ranging from ancient ethics to philosophical practice sui generis, or to the philosophy of psychology.

AB - The essay examines the central role that pleasure plays in a wide range of conceptualisations of happiness or ‘good life’, from Epicurean hedonism, to Christian asceticism, to contemporary cases of pastoral and philosophical counselling. Despite the apparent moral chasm between hedonists and ascetics, a look at the practices promoted by Epicurus and the Christian monastic fathers reveals striking similarities. The reason is that, at a fundamental level, both parties agree that one should reject the vulgar pleasures that society glorifies, and develop a refined attitude that seeks the appropriate and natural pleasures, while ignoring the harmful or unnecessary ones. And such an attitude can only be acquired through moral training, either by philosophical instruction and reflection, or by pastoral counselling. We highlight some important parallels regarding the connection between pleasure and happiness, as conceived by Epicureans and monastic fathers of the Eastern Orthodox Church. We begin by discussing elements of Epicureanism that can also be found in its rival philosophical schools and Christianity, mainly the emphasis on forming the right conception of happiness and acting in accordance with it. We then examine the connection between morality and happiness in the Christian Orthodox monasticism. We argue that Christian ascetic ethics not only condone some types of pleasures, but in fact require them as elements of happiness in this life that play an instrumental role for the Christian soteriological dogma. The argument has wider philosophical significance because it shows that pleasure is indeed a fundamental conceptual ingredient of happiness across different normative ethical contexts.
