AB - Based on personal experience, this paper shows how shifting and precarious conditions in
the labour market impact early career researchers. In particular, it focuses on how visa regimes,
citizenship and class difference, and access to “safety nets”, together with structural conditions,
impact academic opportunities and daily life differently in Western and Eastern Europe, and how
they impose mobility.

AB - The author explores reparations of urban sites in Bor, a copper processing town in eastern Serbia. She looks at recent attempts at reparations carried out by an industrial company in the context of the town’s and the company’s ‘revival’. She explores ethnographically how the reparations were seen as deceptions, temporary, partial, fake, and superficial, but simultaneously praised as ‘at least something’. The author argues that this ambivalence, which consisted of simultaneous positive and negative dispositions towards the promise the repairs held, resulted in people’s involvement in the ‘politics of simulation’ of the town’s and the copper company’s ‘revival’. She also shows how through people’s hope for order, and through their hope of being moral state subjects, the state became an object of emotional investment.

AB - The article explores the ‘work of hope’ in relation to air pollution and health hazards in
Bor, a polluted copper-processing town in Eastern Serbia. The aim of this paper is to
show the mutual imbrication of hope and risk by delineating how hope for a stable
personal and communal future was anchored in the polluting company and the
toxic substances it produced, which, in various ways, provided a sense of possibility
and opportunity. I show how the work of hope demanded simultaneous weighing
up, manoeuvring, accepting, and bargaining with risks that became an integral part
of the work of hope in a social setting where the double bind of growth versus
sustainability was deeply embedded. I argue that together, hope and risk were both
framing devices for thinking about and living towards futures in a context of
reindustrialisation and recent sudden economic flourishing in this post-socialist town.

contradictory thoughts, feelings, and attitudes. In this debate, five anthropologists adopt
an individual-centered and phenomenological perspective on contradictions. How can one
live with them? How to describe them from an anthropological point of view? Should we

Ambivalence and the Work of Hope: Anticipating Futures in a Serbian Industrial Town

AB - This study is based on fourteen months of ethnographic fieldwork that I conducted in Bor, a copper-processing town in Eastern Serbia. From the perspectives of “ordinary” people, this dissertation explores the process of post-socialist transformation through ethnography of the interconnections between the town (characterised by mono-structural economy) and the industrial company.
After a prosperous period during Yugoslav socialism there was an economic, social, and symbolic decline of the copper-processing company followed by decay of the town and industry during the 1990s. This thesis captures the moment of political promise that brought a new horizon of hope for a better life and the promise of economic growth through the revival of the rundown industry. It captures the experiences of people who have had different encounters with existing attempts to revitalise and transform everyday life, in the context of the mutual revival of the company and the town.
In this thesis I analyse people’s anticipations of their futures as well as the practices they invested in maintaining and realising their hopes (which I call the “work of hope”). I argue that ambivalence, which consisted of simultaneous coupling of hope with various other competing and conflicting sets of dispositions, such as risk, despair, entrapment, dismay, anxiety, frustration, and so on, was reflected in how people’s futures were imagined, conveyed, and lived towards. The first part of the dissertation focuses on how material objects, such as the renovated sites, the district heating, and pollution, appeared in my interlocutors’ work of hope and in their anticipations of futures. In parallel with this, the second part focuses on how the temporality of waiting and the work of hope played out in relation to gender, age, and generation among the people with whom I spent time.
I argue that my interlocutors’ anticipations of futures and their work of hope resulted in reproduction of inequalities (in terms of gender, age, and class). I argue that in their encounter with the omnipresent industrial company that pervaded and constructed everyday lives, and through their work of hope, the state was encountered and reproduced and the social contract between the company, the town and the people was maintained. The analysis of how people in the industrial town of Bor played with and sought to reconcile ambivalence feeds into existing debates about how hope is read through, produced through, and articulated in relation to the material and social landscapes.

AB - In this text the construction of national identity has been analyzed through the example of national tourism strategy in Serbia framed within the contemporary state's process of 'branding' the nation. Through the analysis of Marketing strategy and recently published tourist brochures designed for foreign tourists, the aim is to investigate the ways in which representation of a new national identity, utilized for consumption and selling to the Others, is constructed. The text points out to the perspectives of cultural management and strategic government of national representation as a way of repositioning the bad image of Serbia. The analysis shows that, rather than negative connotations that 'follow' the notion of balkanism, tourist reformulation leads to changed, but still ambiguous and undefined representation. In this text I point out to the aspect of branding - as marketing process which uses cultural recourses - that leads to pacification of the image. Seen as a strategic mean by which the stigma could be averted, the paper shows that this process does not offer a structural solution of the problem which represents the obstacle of Serbia's further development.
