AB - This article raises the following questions: will the problems that are being addressed by contemporary medical ethics and bioethics change in the time to come and will their current conceptual frameworks become outdated or will imminent technological and social developments pose new challenges that will not have to be answered by the adoption of
entirely new ethical concepts? These issues are being addressed on the basis of the materials that are offered to us by the science fiction serial Star Trek, which is taken as representative of the future. Special attention is given to one of its episodes (called Ethics), an episode that appears to test the physician-patient relationship, the conduct of medical research and the use of its results, the right to assisted suicide, as well as other traditions of moral thinking in medicine in the light of their future status. The moral dilemmas of this futuristic story appear
strikingly similar to those we face nowadays. Moreover, it is apparently impossible to imagine a different discourse, in spite of the fact that characters and their environment in the story are very different from those we are acquainted with in real life. Hence, it can be concluded
that moral problems related to scientific and medical problems from the future, if at all imaginable, are unlikely to differ substantially from the ones we currently know. In other words, new bio-technological developments might only radicalize some ethical questions, but the
answers to them and the arguments in favour of their (un)acceptability appear available already

AB - Persson and Savulescu (2011b) is a largely successful defense of the position promoted in Persson and Savulescu (2008) against Fenton’s critique of this position in Fenton (2009). However, one of Fenton’s essential censures has remained without response: if moral enhancement (ME) is to occur at the genetic or biological level, as Persson and Savulescu suppose it can and ought to, it will not be possible without significant scientific progress, including cognitive enhancement (CE) by bio-medical means. I will offer a response here to this critique Fenton raised—a response Persson and Savulecu did not give. It will be based on the concept of “integrated neuro-enhancement”, abbreviated (C+M) E.

AB - I will discuss four major perspectives on cognitive enhancement and morality: 1) cognitive enhancement is morally impermissible because humans are not supposed to alter what God has ordained or nature has shaped; 2) cognitive enhancement is our moral duty, because a cognitively upgraded human is a better human; 3) cognitive enhancement is morally permissible only if it is preceded by moral enhancement; 4) cognitive enhancement is morally permissible only if it is a means to moral enhancement. I shall argue that the first three perspectives are less cogent than the fourth. The fourth perspective integrates cognitive and moral enhancement into one whole. I will denote it by (C+M) E.

The State and State-Building : Theory and Practice in Retrospect

AB - The state increasingly represents an enigma in contemporary politics, and opens up a variety of controversies in social science research. On the one hand, the state has been a central concept used to constitute the ‘international’, and its institutionalization across the globe the focus of concern behind state-building. For instance, the state frequently represents itself as a practical measure of political maturity - as exemplified by the significance attached to ‘a seat’ at the United Nations and the importance assigned to state-building measures as a means to counter poverty and terrorism. Yet, on the other hand, there are simultaneous claims that the state is increasingly eclipsed by global markets, transnational environmental and social hazards, and not to mention expanding webs of international governance regimes. Following this logic, the concept of the state is argued as outdated, while we are being persuaded to be better off speaking of a politics of networks, instead of a politics among nations.

AB - The focus of this paper will be on the issue of justice, specifically in international relations. In that context, a number of existing theories of international justice will be briefly reviewed. Afterwards, I will turn to the question of what justice actually is. The assertion that justice is based on the idea of freedom will be substantiated. I will attempt to support my position with Doyle’s and Kant’s argumentation. It will be concluded that there are robust arguments in favor of the thesis that our historical development is marked by a gradual expansion of freedom and justice.
Furthermore, we have strong reasons to aspire liberal internationalism based on the
idea of humanity’s gradual approximation of some form of global state, because such
a conception might be the best warrant of justice in international relations.
