AB - In her book Democracy and Truth: The Conflict between Political and Epistemic Virtues, Snježana Prijić Samaržija advocates a stance that not only political, but also epistemic values are necessary for justification of democracy. Specifically, she mounts defense for one particular type of public deliberation on epistemic grounds. In this paper, I will discuss the following issue: What connects this type of public deliberation to the wider context of (epistemic) justification of democracy? I will attempt to explain why Prijić Samaržija’s stance can be understood as a version of deliberative epistemic instrumentalism and to discuss the role played by the public deliberation within this framework.

In particular, it will examine two meanings of deliberation, i.e. deliberation as discussion, and deliberation as reflective rationality. The author maintains that both meanings are of great importance for the theorist of democracy interested in solving the paradoxes of voting-based theories.

Social Ontology : From Intentionality to Documentality

AB - What keeps society together? According to John Searle is collective intentionality. Since Searle’s 1995 book, we find that idea at the centre of passionate discussions. More recently, in 2005, Maurizio Ferraris has suggested to substitute the notion of collective intentionality with the notion of “documentality”: the basis of social reality is the inscription of acts and the social objects that follow. Instead of the rule X counts as Y in C (which Searle himself acknowledged as flawed in his 2010’s book) we should have the rule Object = Inscribed Act. Social objects are the result of a social act (one that involves at least two persons or a person and a deputed machine), which is characterised by being registered on a piece of paper, in a computer file or even simply in the heads of persons.
Social objects — such as marriages, promises, bets, parties, revolutions and economic crises — fill up our world more than do stones, tress and coconuts, and they are more important for us, given that a good part of our happiness or unhappiness depends on them. Yet we do not always take account of them, and even more rarely do we ask what they are made of, taking them seriously only when we lose our wallet or train ticket, our passport or credit card and we set to searching, paying, phoning, writing e-mails and queuing in all sorts of offices. It is only then that we understand (too late, alas) that social objects are made of inscriptions, whether on paper or on some magnetic support, or even (in the case of the promises we make every day) in people’s heads.

AB - This paper aims to present Searle’s conception of institutional reality as an important contribution to contemporary political philosophy and social theory. Its importance notwithstending, the two objections will be raised concerning the central notion of collective intentionality. Searle thinks of this notion as crucial for explaining human cooperation and social reality. The first objection is that Searle missed to take into accout the rationality assumption in his explanation of cooperation and human interaction. The second objection is related to the previos one. Additionally, Serle missed to investigate the role of autonomous moral agent in the procedure of
constructing social reality. Given this shortcoming, there is no possibility for addressing the question of justice within Serle’s theory of institutional reality.

AB - Cilj ovog rada je dvostruk: najpre će biti analizirane četiri savremene teorije demokratije, da bi potom bio predložen teorijski okvir za dalja istraživanja koji se zasniva na prethodno anliziranim teorijama.
