Re-interpreting Tradition: Maximus the Confessor on Creation in Ambigua ad Ioannem

AB - Maximus the Confessor’s Ambigua ad Ioannem represents a composition of 66 elucidations on ambiguous passages from the works of Gregory Nazianzen. The collection was written between 628 and 630 and dedicated to a certain John, whose identity is still under scholarly scrutiny. Although Ambigua, as a collection of various scholia, is mainly an exegetical work it may be to some extent subsumed under the popular Byzantine literary genre of erotapokriseis or question-and-answer literature, since the recipient of the work had selected different passages from Gregory and asked Maximus to ponder over their meaning. One of Maximus’ intentions in writing this work is the dismissal of Gregory’s alleged Origenistic or heterodox leaning (as in Ambiguum 7) and the justification of Gregory’s virtual infallibility and of his designation the ‘Theologian’ (as in Ambiguum 21). Moreover, Maximus displays his immense capacity to synthesize divergent theological traditions and to present them as parts of one coherent theological system.

AB - The paper aims to analyse the sermons and writings of the bishop and recently canonized saint of the Serbian Orthodox Church Nicholai Velimirović in regard to democracy. Due to his critique of Europe for abandoning Christianity as its centre of civilization, and slipping into the barbarity of the two world wars, some scholars maintained that Velimirović condemns European democracy. The analysis is focused on two periods from Velimirović’s life, the first one that comprises the period of his studies abroad, the WWI and interwar period, and the second one which includes the period of the WWII and Velimirović’s subsequent emigration in the USA.

AB - I will demonstrate that in the understanding of the early Church, expressed through artistic symbols and images and complemented by liturgy, eschatology should not be placed at the end of history, as the finale of divine revelation and human fulfilment, but at the core of personal and historical drama.Although the NewTestament writers and other second century Christian authors expressed their eschatological vision in writing, there is a striking lack of both Christian imagery as well as relevant literary material about ecclesiastical utilisation of this imagery, from the first two centuries of the Christian era. Therefore, this investigation focuses on the period from the third to the sixth centuries with regard to both the Christian imagery and the textual material which might serve as the dogmatic basis for this imagery

Eros and Diastema: The Transformation of Desire in St. Gregory of Nyssa

AB - The paper aims to analyze the relation between the notion of love or desire (eros) for God, and the notion of distance (diastema) between God and the created beings in the works of St Gregory of Nyssa. These two notions are interrelated on different levels, because distance that separates God from the created beings is traversed out of desire for God of the latter. First, the distance as temporal interval will be investigated, which separates the present day from the Second Coming of Christ, which is elaborated by Gregory in his early work On Virginity. The focus will then be shifted to the distance between good and evil, that Gregory explicates in the works of his middle period such as On the making of man, Against Eunomius III and The Great Catechetical Oration. Finally, the distance as an inherent characteristic of created nature that never disappears will be analyzed by focusing on Gregory’s later works, such as Homilies on the Song of Songs, On perfection and The Life of Moses.

AB - The aim of the paper is to analyse the views of Klaus Buchenau, Stefan Rohdewald and Ju- lia Anna Lis on the Serbian Orthodox Church. The paper argues that authors form their attitudes towards Serbia and the Serbian Orthodox Church along the lines of the German press, which portrays the Serbian Church as nationalistic, violent, bigoted and backward. The paper embarks on the task to investigate the motifs of the authors for such negative views on the Serbian Church, by arguing that authors build their scholarly constructs on the political narratives of global Western dominance on the one hand, and on the revision of German historical responsibility for the two world wars on the other hand.

AB - The rediscovery of Maximus the Confessor by western scholarship in the mid twentieth century led to a straightforward examination of Aristotelian elements in his works. Scholars such as Hans Urs von Balthasar and Polycarp Sherwood rushed to link Maximus with Aristotle, either by claiming direct influence in regard to the former’s views on movement or regarding the essence – energy distinction, or by suggesting that Maximus refutes the Stagirite’s stances on providence, or on the eternity of the world. Although there were a few isolated voices that denied Aristotle’s direct influence on Maximus, the question of their relationship was not thoroughly examined until the nineteen-nineties.
