AB  - In this symposium, Alessandro Ferrara’s recent book The Democratic Horizon: Hyperpluralism and the Renewal of Political Liberalism – an attempt to expand the framework of Rawls’ political liberalism in order to enable it to meet the challenge of today’s hyperpluralism – is discussed from a variety of angles by four contributors. Among the themes addressed are the potential of political liberalism for grounding a critical attitude; the different potential for accommodation offered by political liberalism for religious and moral, as opposed to economic, pluralism; Rawls’ implicit understanding of truth; the prospects of true democracy in ethnically divided societies that embrace consociationalist and particularly consensualist forms of governance; and the proper role of human rights in paths from decency to democracy from the perspective of an expanded political liberalism. In the final section, Alessandro Ferrara replies to his critics and accepts some of their suggestions.

Potencijal zdravorazumske kritike Gofmanovoj sociologiji okvira

AB  - U ovom radu ćemo pokušati da razmotrimo kritički potencijal sociologije Ervinga Gofmana. Polazna hipoteza će biti da Gofmanovo shavatanje zdravog razuma koje je ponudio u Analizi okvira otvara mogućnost za formulaciju kritičkog uvida u strukturalne datosti svakodnevne društvene prakse. Pokušaćemo takođe da pokažemo da je ovakvo Gofmanovo razumevanje zdravog razuma bilo pod jakim uticajem pragmatizma i fenomenologije, te da su često zanemarene epistemološke razlike između ova dva teorijska pravca ostavile posledice i na gofmanovsku sociologiju. Naime, u Analizi okvira možemo uvek iznova da iščitamo svojevrsnu teorijsku napetost između pragmatičkog insistiranja na autonomnom teorijskom značaju zdravog razuma i redukcionističkih nastojanja koje su fenomenolozi gajili spram ove forme mišljenja. Shodno tome, tvrdićemo da je upravo ova ambivalencija po pitanju uloge zdravog razuma u tumačenju društvene stvarnosti predstavlja glavni razlog što kritički potencijal Gofmanove sociologije ostaje u velikoj meri implicitan po svom karakteru.
AB  - In this paper, I will try to appraise the critique potential of Erving Goffman’s sociology. The starting hypothesis will be that Goffman’s understanding of common sense offered in Frame Analysis opens the possibility of attaining a critical insight into the structural givens of everyday practice. I will also try to show that Goffman’s understanding of common sense was under heavy influence of pragmatism and phenomenology - and that the often-overseen epistemological differences between these two schools of thought had significant consequences on his sociology. Namely, in the Frame Analysis we can easily find a certain tension between insistence on the autonomous theoretical importance of common sense put forward by the pragmatist and reductionist tendencies towards this type of thought found among the phenomenologists. Therefore, I will argue that this ambivalence regarding the role of common sense in interpreting social realty is the main reason why critique potential of Goffman’s sociology remains implicit in its character.

AB  - U ovom radu ćemo nastojati da ispitamo u kojoj meri je egalitaristički rečnik jugoslovenskog
socijalizma bio u stanju da ponudi alternativni okvir za interpretaciju savremenih
srpsko-albanskih odnosa. Inicijalna hipoteza polazi od toga da je jugoslovenska
elita – usled eksperimentalnog karaktera samoupravnog socijalizma koji je podrazumevao
određene kompromise sa liberalnim kapitalizmom – bila strukturalno prinuđena
da sistematično negira socijalni aspekt demonstracija koje su na Kosovu odvijale
tokom 1968, 1981. i 1988 godine. Primenom kritičke analize diskursa na štampane
medije (Politika, Večernje novosti i Borba), pokušaćemo da pokažemo kako je vladajuća
nomenklatura složene političko-ekonomske aspekte bunta isključivo tretirala kao izraz
nacionalizma. Ova diskurzivna strategija je samim akterima sugerisala da je nacionalizam
zajednički imenitelj za ekonomsku, političku i etničku jednakost. Krajnje posledice
ovakvih diskurzivnih redukcija će biti prikazane kroz analizu medijskog
izveštavanja sa demonstracija na Kosovu i mitinga „Bratstva i jedinstva“ u Beogradu
1988. godine, gde je primetno zatvaranje prostora za ne-nacionalističko tumačenje
bilo koje vrste socijalnog bunta, ali i postepeno odustajanje aktera od artikulisanja
sopstvenog iskustva nepravde u socijalnom ključu.

Pragmatic Epistemology and the Community of Engaged Actors

AB  - In this paper I will explore the relation between engagement and
social science. I will try to argue that positivist epistemology found in the early
days of social sciences still greatly influences our understanding of social engagement.
In the first part of the paper, I will analyze the epistemology of social sciences
advocated by Fourier and Saint-Simon and try to show that, for them, scientific
method was primarily the means for taming social change, as well as projecting
private desires and plans onto the public sphere. In the second part, I will offer
an alternative account of social engagement using the epistemic role of the
community found in pragmatism.

AB  - n this symposium, Alessandro Ferrara’s recent book The Democratic Horizon: Hyperpluralism and the Renewal of Political Liberalism – an attempt to expand the framework of Rawls’ political liberalism in order to enable it to meet the challenge of today’s hyperpluralism – is discussed from a variety of angles by four contributors. Among the themes addressed are the potential of political liberalism for grounding a critical attitude; the different potential for accommodation offered by political liberalism for religious and moral, as opposed to economic, pluralism; Rawls’ implicit understanding of truth; the prospects of true democracy in ethnically divided societies that embrace consociationalist and particularly consensualist forms of governance; and the proper role of human rights in paths from decency to democracy from the perspective of an expanded political liberalism. In the final section, Alessandro Ferrara replies to his critics and accepts some of their suggestions.

AB  - U ovom radu ćemo nastojati da ispitamo u kojoj meri je egalitaristički rečnik jugoslovenskog
socijalizma bio u stanju da ponudi alternativni okvir za interpretaciju savremenih
srpsko-albanskih odnosa. Inicijalna hipoteza polazi od toga da je jugoslovenska
elita – usled eksperimentalnog karaktera samoupravnog socijalizma koji je podrazumevao
određene kompromise sa liberalnim kapitalizmom – bila strukturalno prinuđena
da sistematično negira socijalni aspekt demonstracija koje su na Kosovu odvijale
tokom 1968, 1981. i 1988 godine. Primenom kritičke analize diskursa na štampane
medije (Politika, Večernje novosti i Borba), pokušaćemo da pokažemo kako je vladajuća
nomenklatura složene političko-ekonomske aspekte bunta isključivo tretirala kao izraz
nacionalizma. Ova diskurzivna strategija je samim akterima sugerisala da je nacionalizam
zajednički imenitelj za ekonomsku, političku i etničku jednakost. Krajnje posledice
ovakvih diskurzivnih redukcija će biti prikazane kroz analizu medijskog
izveštavanja sa demonstracija na Kosovu i mitinga „Bratstva i jedinstva“ u Beogradu
1988. godine, gde je primetno zatvaranje prostora za ne-nacionalističko tumačenje
bilo koje vrste socijalnog bunta, ali i postepeno odustajanje aktera od artikulisanja
sopstvenog iskustva nepravde u socijalnom ključu.
AB  - In this paper we examine to which extent was egalitarian vocabulary of Yugoslav socialism
able to provide an alternative framework for interpretation of Serbian-Albanian
relations. Our initial hypothesis is that – due to the experimental nature of Yugoslav
self-management socialism, which implied certain compromises with liberal
capitalism – the Yugoslav elite was structurally bound to systematically negate the
social aspect of protests that took place in Kosovo in 1968, 1981 and 1988. Using critical
discourse analysis on daily newspapers (Politika, Večernje novosti and Borba), we
show how the nomenclature treated the complex social-political aspects of the social
uprisings exclusively as a manifestation of nationalism. To the actors involved, this
discursive strategy suggested that nationalism is a common denominator for economic,
political and ethnic equality. Final consequences of these discursive strategies will
be shown through analysis of media coverage of protests in Kosovo and the “Brotherhood
and Unity” meeting that took place Belgrade in 1988, wherein we can see that
there is little space left for non-nationalistic interpretation of any kind of social uprising,
both in media and actors’ perspective.

AB  - Predmet istraživanja ovog rada biće istorijski prikaz i kritička analiza teorijskihsličnosti i razlika između pragmatizma i sociologije. U središtu našeg interesovanja ćebiti teorijski uvidi u zdravorazumsko mišljenje koji su prisutni u savremenoj sociologijii pragmatizmu. Pažnju ćemo pre svega posvetiti autorima interpretativne sociologije isavremenim teoretičarima prakse. U radu ćemo ispitati kakvu ulogu je pragmatičkoshvatanje zdravog razuma igralo pri formulaciji teorijskih uvida o svakodnevnomiskustvu koji se nude u interpretativnoj sociologiji i novim teorijama prakse. Pored toga,razmotrićemo značaj ovih istorijskih preklapanja izmenu pragmatizma i sociologije zapotencijalnu rekonceptualizaciju međusobnog odnosa teorijskog znanja i svakodnevneprakse.Metod koji ćemo koristiti će pre svega podrazumevati istraživačke postupke skojima se srećemo u studijama koje se bave međusobnim uticajem teorijskih ideja kaošto su: poređenje ideja, teza i teorijskih polazišta; ispitivanje evolucije teorijskihstanovišta; ispitivanje kontekstualnih uslova nastanka i razvoja teorijskih ideja. Ovapoređenja ćemo vršiti sa namerom da pokažemo da je konceptualizacijazdravorazumskog mišljenja igrala važnu ulogu pri stvaranju novih pristupa i pravaca usavremenoj sociologiji. Metod će takođe biti analitički kada su u pitanju procenelogičke koherentnosti teorijskih određenja zdravog razuma u delima autora koji će biti ufokusu istraživanja.Cilj rada je da pokaže da pragmatičko poimanje zdravog razuma može daposluži kao teorijski okvir za povezivanje društvene teorije i svakodnevne prakse.Nastojaćemo da dokažemo da kontinuitet između zdravorazumskog načina mišljenja isociološke teorije koji ne podrazumeva podrivanje kritičkog potencijala same društveneteorije.U uvodnom delu rada u kome ćemo se ukratko osvrnuti na radove klasičnihpragmatista i sociologa, Džona Djuija i Emila Dirkema. Videćemo da je između dvojiceautora postojalo teorijsko saglasje po pitanju razumevanja osnova fenomenadruštvenosti, te da su se razlike uglavnom bazirale na različitim epistemološkomuvidima. Naime, naturalizam koji je svojstven Djuievom pragmatizmu je u određenojmeri podrazumevao kontinuitet između zdravorazumskog i naučnog mišljenja, a ovakvogledište je pak bilo u suprotnosti sa Direkemovom verzijom pozitivizma u kome5svakodnevno, zdravorazumsko znanje nikada ne može samerljivo sa naučnom istinom.Tvrdićemo da je ova razlika temeljno pratila dalji razvoj odnosa sociologije ipragmatizma. Međutim, značaj Dirkemovih epistemoloških gledišta se svakako najvišeogledao u činjenici da su upravo ovi uvidi odigrali jednu od ključnih uloga u formiranjufunkcionalizma, kao jednog od najuticajnih teorijskih struja u savremenoj sociologiji. Uprvom poglavlju ćemo tako nastojati da objasnimo na koji način su fenomenologija ipragmatizam stvorile osnovu za prevazilaženje ove paradigme. Naročito pažnju ćemoposvetiti radovima Alfreda Šica i Džordža Herberta Mida koji su značajno uticale nainterpretativnu sociologiju. U drugom poglavlju ćemo kritički razmotriti teorijske uvidedvojice prominentnih interpretativnih sociologa, Harolda Garfinkela i ErvingaGofmana. Usredsredićemo se na njihovo tvrdnju da nesvodivosti konkretnogzdravorazumskog znanja na opšte obrasce razumevanja društvene stvarnosti, kao i naustaljeni prigovor da se u okvirima njihovih sociologija ne mogu osvetliti odnosi moći udruštvu. U trećem poglavlju analiziraćemo radove Pjera Burdijea i Lika Boltanskog kojisu u okviru pravca novih teorija prakse upravo pokušali da formulišu sintezupartikularnog zdravorazumskog znanja i univerzalnog jezika teorijske kritike. Učetvrtom poglavlju promatraćemo u kojoj meri nam uvidi neopragmatista RičardaRortija i Donalda Dejvidsona omogućavaju da prevaziđemo određene manjkavati novihteorija prakse.U zaključnom delu rada tvrdićemo da nam naša analiza sugeriše nužnostuviđanja strukture zdravog razuma. Shodno tome, obrazložićemo distinkciju izmeđusvojstava konkretnog, svakodnevnog znanja zdravog razuma i zdravorazumskih kvaziteorija. Pokazaćemo da se prva vrsta znanja ne može univerzalizovati i sledi uvide kojesu formulisali Garfinkel i Gofman, dok druga vrsta znanja često reprodukuje odnosemoći i nejednakosti i zahteva teorijsku kritiku.
AB  - The object of the research conducted in this thesis will be an historical reviewand critical analysis of theoretical similarities and differences between pragmatism andsociology. The focus of my interest will be on the theoretical insights into commonsense that can be found in contemporary sociology and pragmatism. I will mainlydedicate my attention to the authors of interpretive sociology and new theories ofpractice. In the thesis I will investigate the role that the pragmatic view on commonsense had on the formulation of theoretical insights into everyday experience offered bythe interpretive sociology and new theories of practice. Aside from this, I will alsoreflect on the importance that the theoretical overlapping between pragmatism andsociology had for the potential reconceptualization of the relation between theoreticalknowledge and everyday practice.The method that I am going to rely on generally entails research procedures thatcan be found in studies that deal with mutual influence of theoretical ideas such as:comparison of ideas and theoretical standpoints; investigation of evolution of theoreticalinsights; investigation of contextual factors that influence the emergence anddevelopment of theoretical ideas. The goal of these comparisons that I will be making isto prove that conceptualization of common sense played an important role in creation ofnew approaches and paradigms in contemporary sociology. The method will also beanalytical in the sense that I will systematically question logical coherence of theoreticaldesignations of common sense in the works of authors that will be in the focus of thiswork.The goal of this thesis is to show that pragmatic understating of common sensecould serve as a theoretical frame in which social theory and everyday practice mightbecome closer. I will try to prove that there is continuity between common sense andsociological theory which does not imply that the critical potential of the social theorybecomes undermined by this fact.In the introductory part of the thesis, we will shorty review the works of twoclassical pragmatists and sociologist, John Dewey and Emile Durkheim. We will seethat there was a theoretical accordance between the two authors regarding the basis ofthe phenomena of sociability, and that the differences were mainly grounded onepistemological insights. Namely, Dewey’s naturalism largely entailed a certain amount7of continuity between commonsense and scientific ways of thinking and this view wasin opposition with Durkheim’s positivism, which implied that everyday knowledge ofcommon sense can ever be commensurable with scientific truth. I will maintain that thisdifference thoroughly followed further development of both sociology and pragmatism.However, the importance of Durkheim’s epistemological insights can primarily befound in the fact that they played a crucial role in the appearance of functionalism, asone of the most influential theoretical currents in modern sociology. Therefore, in thefirst chapter I will try to explain how phenomenology and pragmatism laid thefoundation for the overcoming of this paradigm. I will especially focus my attention tothe works of Alfred Schutz and George Herbert Mead that profoundly influencedinterpretative sociology. In the second chapter, I will critically reflect on the theoreticalinsights of two prominent interpretative sociologists, Harold Garfinkel and ErvingGoffman. We will center our analysis on their claim that the concrete everydayknowledge can never be reduced to general forms of understanding social reality, aswell as on the typical objection to their work according to which this kind of sociologycannot shed light on power relations present in the society. In the third chapter we willanalyze the works of Pierre Bourdieu and Luc Boltanski in which they tried toformulate a synthesis of particular common sense knowledge and universal language ofsocial critique. In the fourth chapter we will consider to which extent the views of theneopragmatists, Richard Rorty and Donald Davidson can help us to overcome some ofthe shortcomings of the new theories of practice.In the concluding part of the thesis I will claim that our examination suggeststhat we must take into account the structure of common sense. Therefore, we I willexplain the distinction between the properties of concrete everyday knowledge ofcommon sense and commonsensical quasi theories. I will show that the first kind ofknowledge cannot be universalized and that it follows the insights Garfinkel andGoffman, while the second kind of knowledge often reproduces the power relations andinequality and demands a theoretical critique.

Učetvrtom poglavlju promatraćemo u kojoj meri nam uvidi neopragmatista RičardaRortija i Donalda Dejvidsona omogućavaju da prevaziđemo određene manjkavati novihteorija prakse.U zaključnom delu rada tvrdićemo da nam naša analiza sugeriše nužnostuviđanja strukture zdravog razuma. Shodno tome, obrazložićemo distinkciju izmeđusvojstava konkretnog, svakodnevnog znanja zdravog razuma i zdravorazumskih kvaziteorija. Pokazaćemo da se prva vrsta znanja ne može univerzalizovati i sledi uvide kojesu formulisali Garfinkel i Gofman, dok druga vrsta znanja često reprodukuje odnosemoći i nejednakosti i zahteva teorijsku kritiku., The object of the research conducted in this thesis will be an historical reviewand critical analysis of theoretical similarities and differences between pragmatism andsociology. The focus of my interest will be on the theoretical insights into commonsense that can be found in contemporary sociology and pragmatism. I will mainlydedicate my attention to the authors of interpretive sociology and new theories ofpractice. In the thesis I will investigate the role that the pragmatic view on commonsense had on the formulation of theoretical insights into everyday experience offered bythe interpretive sociology and new theories of practice. Aside from this, I will alsoreflect on the importance that the theoretical overlapping between pragmatism andsociology had for the potential reconceptualization of the relation between theoreticalknowledge and everyday practice.The method that I am going to rely on generally entails research procedures thatcan be found in studies that deal with mutual influence of theoretical ideas such as:comparison of ideas and theoretical standpoints; investigation of evolution of theoreticalinsights; investigation of contextual factors that influence the emergence anddevelopment of theoretical ideas. The goal of these comparisons that I will be making isto prove that conceptualization of common sense played an important role in creation ofnew approaches and paradigms in contemporary sociology. The method will also beanalytical in the sense that I will systematically question logical coherence of theoreticaldesignations of common sense in the works of authors that will be in the focus of thiswork.The goal of this thesis is to show that pragmatic understating of common sensecould serve as a theoretical frame in which social theory and everyday practice mightbecome closer. I will try to prove that there is continuity between common sense andsociological theory which does not imply that the critical potential of the social theorybecomes undermined by this fact.In the introductory part of the thesis, we will shorty review the works of twoclassical pragmatists and sociologist, John Dewey and Emile Durkheim. We will seethat there was a theoretical accordance between the two authors regarding the basis ofthe phenomena of sociability, and that the differences were mainly grounded onepistemological insights. Namely, Dewey’s naturalism largely entailed a certain amount7of continuity between commonsense and scientific ways of thinking and this view wasin opposition with Durkheim’s positivism, which implied that everyday knowledge ofcommon sense can ever be commensurable with scientific truth. I will maintain that thisdifference thoroughly followed further development of both sociology and pragmatism.However, the importance of Durkheim’s epistemological insights can primarily befound in the fact that they played a crucial role in the appearance of functionalism, asone of the most influential theoretical currents in modern sociology. Therefore, in thefirst chapter I will try to explain how phenomenology and pragmatism laid thefoundation for the overcoming of this paradigm. I will especially focus my attention tothe works of Alfred Schutz and George Herbert Mead that profoundly influencedinterpretative sociology. In the second chapter, I will critically reflect on the theoreticalinsights of two prominent interpretative sociologists, Harold Garfinkel and ErvingGoffman. We will center our analysis on their claim that the concrete everydayknowledge can never be reduced to general forms of understanding social reality, aswell as on the typical objection to their work according to which this kind of sociologycannot shed light on power relations present in the society. In the third chapter we willanalyze the works of Pierre Bourdieu and Luc Boltanski in which they tried toformulate a synthesis of particular common sense knowledge and universal language ofsocial critique. In the fourth chapter we will consider to which extent the views of theneopragmatists, Richard Rorty and Donald Davidson can help us to overcome some ofthe shortcomings of the new theories of practice.In the concluding part of the thesis I will claim that our examination suggeststhat we must take into account the structure of common sense. Therefore, we I willexplain the distinction between the properties of concrete everyday knowledge ofcommon sense and commonsensical quasi theories. I will show that the first kind ofknowledge cannot be universalized and that it follows the insights Garfinkel andGoffman, while the second kind of knowledge often reproduces the power relations andinequality and demands a theoretical critique.",

AB  - This paper tries to critically analyse Jeffrey Alexander’s cultural sociology. In the first part of the paper I will examine Alexander’s conception of hermeneutical structuralism which argues that conventional systemic sociology and richness of experience found in everyday praxis can be reconciled. In the next section I will provide a critique of this kind of approach to social theory and maintain that Alexander’s sociology is, in principle, reductionist regarding everyday life. In addition, I will also point out some of the comparative advantages that pragmatically oriented theory has in the attempt of integrating theoretical and practical knowledge. In the final section of the paper, I will try to illustrate some of the major shortcomings of Alexander’s sociology on the concrete example of advances in computer technology.

AB  - This article stems from the impression of being condemned to late and moralizing reactions in regard to advances
in the life sciences.We suggest a return to a speculative
and theoretical approach in posing the question(s) of the limit of possible thinking of the enhanced human. This return allows for the possibility to show, not just inductively, but “clearly and distinctly,” the specific justifications and lines of reasoning of anthropocentric prejudice or species narcissism. It also enables us to move freely and precisely along the limits of thinking the
human/non-human. In this way, we hope to put forward a few
markers or guideposts that would further the debate about
notions of human enhancement.

AB  - Ovaj rad bavi se narcizmom ljudske vrste, koji opstaje uprkos viševekovnim naučnim
dokazivanjima da čovek nije ni središte ni svrha univerzuma. U tekstu se izlažu
prelomni momenti operisanja čoveka od predstave o vlastitom povlašćenom
položaju i sugeriše se da Kopernikova, Darvinova i Frojdova intervencija u tom
pogledu nisu bile dovoljne. Modifikacija njihovih učenja u humanističkom ključu
upućuje na potrebu da se nastavi radikalno raščaravanje recidiva izuzetnosti čoveka:
„samo povređivanje” ostaje jedini teorijski odgovoran i praktično delotvoran
metod isceljivanja od antropocentričke predrasude.
AB  - This work deals with the narcissism of the mankind, which persists in spite of centurial
substantiation by the sciences that men is not the center nor the purpose of the Universe.
In the text are presented the crucial points in the operation of removing the image of
human’s privileged position. It is suggested that Copernicus’, Darwin’s and Freud’s intervention
had not been sufficient in this respect. The modification of their learning in the
humanistic key, points at the need to continue radical disenchanting of recidive of
human exceptionality: „self-injuring” remains the only theoretically responsible and
effective practice of healing from anthropocentric prejudice.

AB  - Cilj konferencije „Korupcija i društveni razvoj“ je da istraži mnogostruke dimenzije fenomena korupcije oslanjajući se na njene različite definicije, od  administrativne, preko javno-interesne i ekonomske do filozofske, ali će se jednako ispitivati razumevanje te pojave i u njenom izvornom aristotelijanskom značenju rađanja i propadanja. Da bismo razumeli kako je sve što se rodi osuđeno i da propada – piše Aristotel u prvoj rečenici svog spisa o postajanju i propadanju – potrebno je razmatrati uzroke i odnose svih  onih promena koje dovode do nastanka, rađanja ali i propadanja, nestajanja nečega.

AB  - U ovom članku nastojaćemo da ostvarimo sistematičan uvid u odnos između
svakodnevnih praksi i javnog prostora. Kroz analizu radova dvojice uticajnih teoretičara iz
ove oblasti, Fukoa i Lefevra, pokušaćemo da pružimo teorijsko obrazloženje intuiciji da
(javni) prostor predstavlja jedan od osnovnih konstitutivnih elementa slobodnog delanja. U
prvom delu članka, analiziraćemo Fukoov pojam heterotopije kako bismo ukazali na
mogućnost one „prostorno posredovane“ samorefleksije koja veoma nalikuje na filozofsku
askezu iz takozvane kasne faze njegovog dela. Potom ćemo razmotriti u kojoj meri Lefevrovo
stanovište da javni prostor predstavlja hegelijansku konkretnu apstrakciju – koja sobom
povlači dijalektičku analizu i praćenje složenih istorijskih protivrečnosti – dopunjuje i
produbljuje vizuru koju uspostavlja Fuko svojim pojmom heterotopija. U tom smislu, biće
pokazano da, uprkos svim razlikama u teorijskim polazištima, oba autora brane ideju jednog
javnog prostora u kojem se brišu doznačavanja – kako bi se „otvorio prostor“ slobodnom
delatniku.
AB  - In this paper we will try to offer a systematic insight into the relation of everyday practices and public space. By examining the work of two of the most influential authors in this field, Foucault and Lefebvre, we will try to provide a theoretical explanation of intuition that (public) space represents one of the key constitutive elements of free action. In the first part of the paper, we will consider Foucault’s notion of heterotopia in the interest of pointing towards a “spatially intermediated” self-reflection which, to a great degree, resembles the philosophical askesis form his so called letter work. Afterwards, we will consider in which sense Lefebvre’s position that public space represents a Hegelian concrete abstraction - which entails dialectical analysis and tracking of complex historical contradictions - complements and deepens perspective that Foucault puts before us in his heterotopias. In that vein, it will be shown that both authors, despite the difference in their theoretical starting points, defend the idea of such a public space in which all signifiers are removed in the interest of „opening space” for the free agent

abstract = "U ovom članku nastojaćemo da ostvarimo sistematičan uvid u odnos između
svakodnevnih praksi i javnog prostora. Kroz analizu radova dvojice uticajnih teoretičara iz
ove oblasti, Fukoa i Lefevra, pokušaćemo da pružimo teorijsko obrazloženje intuiciji da
(javni) prostor predstavlja jedan od osnovnih konstitutivnih elementa slobodnog delanja. U
prvom delu članka, analiziraćemo Fukoov pojam heterotopije kako bismo ukazali na
mogućnost one „prostorno posredovane“ samorefleksije koja veoma nalikuje na filozofsku
askezu iz takozvane kasne faze njegovog dela. Potom ćemo razmotriti u kojoj meri Lefevrovo
stanovište da javni prostor predstavlja hegelijansku konkretnu apstrakciju – koja sobom
povlači dijalektičku analizu i praćenje složenih istorijskih protivrečnosti – dopunjuje i
produbljuje vizuru koju uspostavlja Fuko svojim pojmom heterotopija. U tom smislu, biće
pokazano da, uprkos svim razlikama u teorijskim polazištima, oba autora brane ideju jednog
javnog prostora u kojem se brišu doznačavanja – kako bi se „otvorio prostor“ slobodnom
delatniku., In this paper we will try to offer a systematic insight into the relation of everyday practices and public space. By examining the work of two of the most influential authors in this field, Foucault and Lefebvre, we will try to provide a theoretical explanation of intuition that (public) space represents one of the key constitutive elements of free action. In the first part of the paper, we will consider Foucault’s notion of heterotopia in the interest of pointing towards a “spatially intermediated” self-reflection which, to a great degree, resembles the philosophical askesis form his so called letter work. Afterwards, we will consider in which sense Lefebvre’s position that public space represents a Hegelian concrete abstraction - which entails dialectical analysis and tracking of complex historical contradictions - complements and deepens perspective that Foucault puts before us in his heterotopias. In that vein, it will be shown that both authors, despite the difference in their theoretical starting points, defend the idea of such a public space in which all signifiers are removed in the interest of „opening space” for the free agent",
